WOOD Headmaster Emeritus SENIOR CLASS YEARBOOK 1958 RINDGE TECHNICAL SCHOOL CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS DEDICATION We, the class of 1958, sincerely and gratefully dedicate our yearbook to a man who has guided our school and our class during the past four years. His devotion to the task of efficiently administering the destinies of Rindge has made him a leader in the field of Technical Education. For you, Mr. McCabe, the class of 58 wishes a long and happy life so that you may add further glory to an illustrious career. MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE Headmaster We were very fortunate in having as our Headmaster, for the past four years, the very brilliant, trustworthy, and dependable Mr. McCabe. Mr. McCabe is a graduate of the University of Maine, as an Electrical Engineer. Later he was appointed as a teacher at the University of Maine. He also taught at Tufts University. In 1923 Mr. McCabe was appointed to the Rindge faculty as a teacher of mathematics and physics. From 1928 he was Assistant Headmaster of Rindge. In 1950 he was appointed to succeed Mr. Wood as Headmaster. As we close the door of Rindge behind us we leave Mr. McCabe doing an outstanding job for the present and future students of Rindge. We, the class of 1958, thank you, Mr. McCabe, for the work you have done for us. MR. JOHN M. TOBIN Superintendent of Schools PROLOGUE As the radiance of our high school life fades rapidly into the dimness of the past, we prepare to leave behind the happiest and most important years of our lives. But to the end that the most precious of these moments might not be completely forgotten, we have gathered together a treasury of pictures and student activities and placed them in this, our yearbook. The past four years have been happy ones. As we tread the mysterious road into the future, it is hoped that the yearbook will serve as a pleasant reminder of the happiest days of our lives. MR. EDWARD J. DANEHY Assistant Superintendent of Schools MR. WILLIAM J. KELLEHER Assistant Headmaster As the ’58 senior class prepares to take their place in the world of business it regretfully leaves behind a host of ever helpful teachers. Mr. William Kelleher, for his invaluable and unselfish assistance, stands out vividly in the minds of those who know him a massive unyielding man, who, when smiling projects a radiance which is all his own. Another senior class, with humility and sincerity, expresses their heartfelt thanks to more than just a wonderful teacher but an unparalleled friend. MR. JOHN F, J. KELLEHER Dh Ditech | As the time has come for us to say farewell, we wish to express our thanks to Mr. John Kelleher for all that he has done to help make these past years joyous and memorable ones. To you, Mr. Kelleher, the class of 1958 wishes that you may continue your administrative duties in an impartial, conscientious manner. We wish for you good health so that you may continue your splendid work dominated always by your desire to make Rindge the best school in the land. MR. WILLIAM H. MAHONEY Faculty Advisor MR. HENRY 9. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT I, the spirit of the class of 1958, residing in the hearts of the young men of Rindge Technical School, in the city of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex, and the state of confusion, not being of sound mind and disposing memory do make, ordain, publish, and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament. To the Freshmen we leave stepladder to reach the water fountains. To the Sophomores we leave the pleasure of caring for the Freshmen. To the Juniors we leave answers to Mr. Scott’s tests. aes Fitzgerald we leave a gold plated chess set and a book on ‘“‘How It’s one.” To Mr. E. F. Cassidy we leave a treasure chest filled with 3, 2, Em and Quads. To Mr. Delaney we leave a new class of irresponsible Seniors. To Mr. De Mello we leave all stolen erasers. To Mr. Jennings we leave one Univac to ease the strain. To Mr. Wadden we leave an easy book on mathematics. To Mr. Mahoney we leave a coke machine for the dances. To Mr. Lynch we leave a young college secretary to answer his phone. To Mr. Diehl we leave a new recipe for baking brownies. To Mr. McCabe we leave our undying thanks for his guidance and under- standing. To Mr. J. Kelleher and Mr. W. Kelleher we leave. To the band members leaving Rindge, we take with us the memories of Band: Master Joseph Freni. To Mr. Mellen we leave a lifetime subscription to the Watertown Arsenal Gazette. To Mr. T. McCann we leave a life insurance policy along with crash helmets. To Mr. Terry we leave a book called, “I Was A Faculty Manager.” To the nurse we leave many pains but no pills. To Mr. Creedon, Mr. Myers, and Mr. Egan we leave a forest of 5 foot red- wood. Lastly, I make, constitute, and appoint the class of 1962 executor of this, my Last Will and Testament. Witnessed By: THE CLASS OF 1958 CLASS HISTORY Our first days at Rindge were days of adjustment. High school was a radical change from the school routine we had been following the past eight years. The four years ahead seemed like a long time to us then, but now, looking back we realize how all-too-short a time that it was. David Flanagan was elected President and Richard Scotti, Vice President. The football players began to make themselves known. Regu- lars like Billy Cummings, John Perry, Ben Jackson, Billy Hallisey, and Joe Aiello reported to the freshman squad. Mr. Thomas Smith took over the position of head coach when Mr. Walter Boudreau left. The track team won the national championship that year; the basketball team went to the Tech Tourney. At the end of the freshman year we had made many friends at Rindge among the faculty and student body. We returned to school in September and held class elections. John Thomas was elected President and Philip Corkery was elected Vice President. During the °55-’56 season, our varsity teams gave many sparkling performances. Charlie Jenkins set a new record in the 500-yard dash. Doug Scholl broke his own scoring record which he had set the previous year. Joseph Elder was A.A.U. 50-yard dash champion. The class of 1955 presented Mr. McCabe with an oil portrait as their class gift. We lost a fine man in Mr. Cody. Mr. Cody was an English teacher at Rindge for many years and he was missed by the faculty and student body alike. The class of 1905 had a successful reunion at the Continental Hotel. Mr. Lester Ladd, a chemistry teacher at Rindge for many years, and faculty advisor for the Key Club, retired from a long career of teaching. During the sophomore year, many boys changed their courses to follow the ones best suited to them. By the end of our sophomore year we were a part of Rindge and Rindge was a part of us. In September 1956, we gained the distinction of being “upperclassmen.” The past two years had been rewarding ones, but the next two held promise of new experience and greater reward. One of the highlights of our junior year was the welcome home celebration for Charlie Jenkins. Charlie said that he owed a great deal to the fine coaching of Mr. Thomas Duffy. The “Register” received honorable mention for the write-up on the interview with Charlie. The school was saddened by the passing of Mr. Joseph Frank Freni, band leader at Rindge for many years. The election of new members to the National Honor Society is always a memorable event. George Stef- anidakis, Albert Finkel, Robert McCaffrey, Timothy Coffey, Joseph Magno, and other outstanding members of the junior class were sworn in. Mr. Charles Linehan, head of the mathematics department for many years, retired from teaching. By the time that the senior year rolled around, we were well aware of the standouts in the class. Ed Leary and George McMahon were the outstanding football players. John Thomas and Bob Coffill were Rindge’s outstanding track men. Thomas dis- tinguished himself in the 57-58 season as the best schoolboy high jumper of his time. Coffill became famous for his performances in the 300-yard run and his running as anchor man for the relay team. No better choice could have been made for the class presidency than Joseph Magno. His tireless efforts helped make our senior year a success. The “Register” hit record sales in “1957-58.” The Rindge boys made a fine showing in the Thanksgiving day game, gaining a tie with a favored Cambridge Latin eleven. With graduation in sight we look back on the past four years; the football rallies, the Turkey Day games, school-commerce day and the planning of the prom, stand out in our memory. There are many indications that the prom, scheduled for May 29, will be a tremendous success. We express our thanks to the faculty of Rindge for their help over the years. We will always remember Rindge, and if we have learned the true meaning of the inscription over the doorway, our four years will have been a success—“Work is one of our greatest blessings; everyone should have an honest occupation.” FOOTBALL TEAM FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Manager P. Lambrinos, V. Kelly, J. Carbone, J. Voce, B. Morin, C. Robinson, P. Girard, F. Braga, A. Harrington. SECOND ROW: B. McGuinness, W. Hallisey, J. McGurk, M. Bell, E. Stamps, J. Doherty, E. Bolden, L. Cummings, W. Mitchell, J. Aiello, G. Greenidge, W. McKeon, J. Perry, R. Jones. 1957 FOOTBALL The Rindge team was totally defeated this year. This is something new in the annals of Rindge football history. This season cut deep into the wounds left by last year. When the first game was lost to Revere, it brought back unpleasant memories. The tremendous courage showed by the boys was given them by a great and un- forgettable coach, Mr. Smith. The willingness to win showed by Ed Leary, our captain, George McMahon, our co-captain, John Perry, Robert Jones, Billy Cummings, Joe Aiello, and George Greenidge brought out the fact that the boys hadn’t lost their spirit once during the season. It would be difficult to pick out the most outstanding senior boy who had played football, because they were all great. Due to the flu and Sputnik, there were few followers of the fighting Rindge Warriors. “Oops,” I forgot to mention old 35 Bill Hallisey, Ben McInnis, and Larry Knox. It takes teamwork to run a team, and these boys added to it. A word from the team to Mr. Smith. “We shall never forget the locker room ses- sions we used to have with you before, during and after the game. You showed us that without teamwork, the game of football cannot be played.” With an undefeated freshman team, and many veterans returning, things look brighter for next year. 5 ¢ ) BASKETBALL FRONT ROW: R. Gaul, D. Marshall, B. Jackson, A. Harrington, W. Mitchell, D. Hill. BACK ROW: P. Lambrinos, Manager; V. Kelley, E. Kapopolus, Mr. T. Murphy, Coach. E BASKETBALL 1957-58 The season just closing as we go to press was what might be called a “building season.” It was evident that the season was not as successful because of the inex- perienced players. Not only this fact remained, but very few upperclassmen were seen for very long in a game. The fact that Coach Murphy was building this year was not hard to see, as he concentrated on the inexperienced fellows who would be back to participate next year and the year following. He also realized that with this inex- perience he could not hope to aspire to any championship. ; One of the seniors that. we mentioned and who will be among the missing next year will be Sidney Jones. Under the already proved ability of Coach Murphy we are sure that Rindge will once again come out on top. MO HOCKEY KNEELING, LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Cuneen, Co-Captain B. McInnis, J. Tansey, Co-Captain L. Powers, Coach; L. Riley, F. McGarry, R. Bernard, P. Gerard, R. Parkhurst. HOCKEY 1957-1958 The hockey squad this year was “thin” on experience but at long last long in numbers. With a vastly enlarged practice program at very convenient hours a large number of candidates responded. But as in all developing programs it will take time before the results of this enlarged practice program are excellent. Although the team was winless in league competition it gave Melrose the scare of its life with a tight 2-0 game. The results of the grammar school-freshman developing program should be evidenced in a year or two. Among the seniors who performed well for the varsity team are co-captain Leon Lewis, Bill McIsaac, George Giffen, and Robert Harrington. John Voce proved to be a very capable manager. The senior class wishes Coach Powers all the success in the world and are sure he will regain for Rindge the glory she once knew in hockey. THIRD ROW: Mr. Duffy, T., Coach; Payne, J.; Ward, R.; Sheppard, A.; Marathas, W.; Sullivan, A.; Mr. H. Lynch (Faculty Manager). TRACK 1957-1958 This year Rindge, due to the splendid work of Mr. Duffy, has produced another championship team. During the cross country season our fleet-footed technicians won the Metropolitan League Championship and during the indoor season Rindge won the Metropolitan League Championship of Division 1. Two members of the team, the captains, have been undefeated during the Metro- politan League: “Bob” Coffil in the 300, and John Thomas in the high jump, the latter setting a new league and division record. In the B.A.A. Meet, Coffil won the hurdles in record time, and Thomas broke the high jump record and our great relay team broke the record also. In the State Meet Jackman won the 600 by a large margin over a choice field, Coffil ran his 300 trial heat in record time, and Thomas broke two records in the high jump and the hurdles. Once again our fabul ous relay team came through on top. Also this has been the first year in which Rindge had been represented in the Knights of Columbus and the B.A.A. Meets. Captains Robert Coffil and John Thomas shared the honors. John Thomas broke the existing national schoolboy indoor high jump record at the Madison Square Garden with a leap of 6 feet 7 5 8 inches. The old record was 6 feet 4. 1 2 inches. John and Bob Coffill also earned points in the hurdles in the 440. AMM sk bike PRE: BE ie «ale RELAY TEAM AND COACH Co-Captains JOHN THOMAS JOHN THOMAS AND ROBERT COFFILL United States Champion Schoolbey High Jumper BASEBALL Coach Gibson is more than confident that this year’s baseball team will be a definite improvement over the 1956 squad. Along with captain John Perry, who will serve as “Old Reliable” ready to fill any position, there will be a strong crew of sophomores and juniors returning to the lineup. Among these will be Kapopulas, Mahoney, Wil- band, Kasinske, and Mitchell. Although representation from the senior class will not be-as large as last year the team can certainly hope to benefit by the presence of Ed Leary in right field, and John Voce at first base. On hand also from the graduating class will be L. McKeon in the outfield, “Amo” Stryker at third base, and of course our captain John Perry. On the mound this year will be Kasinski and Kennedy, and Coach Gibson is hopeful that spring recruiting will produce for him an adequate catcher. It is the general opinion of the team members that with some solid hitting, slick fielding, and a few breaks, this year’s baseball team will be riding high in the win column. EPILOGUE Inscribed in the previous pages are the happy and unforgettable memories we enjoyed here at Rindge. These are priceless memories, for as we go on our separate ways into the uncertainty of the future, they will serve as a vivid reminder of the fun, friends and happiness we all loved so well. May each and every member of the class of 1958, under the guid- ance of God, prosper in his chosen field to the end that still more honor and glory might be bestowed upon Rindge.
