JOHN WOOD Headmaster Emer SENIOR CLASS YEARBOOK 1957 RINDGE TECHNICAL SCHOOL CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS DEDICATION Through his untiring efforts and personal intérest in us, we are about to step over the threshold into a new life. Here in- deed is a beacon that will guide and encourage us along our devious ways. The class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-seven herewith dedi- cate its yearbook to Mr. Francis T. McCabe, our genial headmaster. MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE 7 Os 7 re) ‘ lea Psho The Class of 1957 looking back over the last four years views with affection and admiration the man that will be responsible for any suc- cess we attain in the future. This kind and understanding man served as an inspiration to every member of the Senior Class. He will remain a potent influence on the future classes. Through the leadership of Mr. McCabe, the Rindge Technical School has gained acclaim for its ability to develop capable youths who go on to become exemplary citizens in this complex civilization of ours. We would be remiss, Mr. McCabe, if before leaving we did not express our heartfelt gratitude for all you have done for us and let us assure you that you will remain forever in our fond memories. MR. JOHN M. TOBIN Superintendent of Schools PROLOGUE Here in Rindge we planted the seed of a better life. The as- sociation of our four years will bear fruit in a more complex world outside. Therefore we should cherish the memories of four happy years at Rindge and we hope this yearbook will serve to supply a visible bond containing as it does a record of the accomplishments of our class. We have reasons to be proud of these accomplishments having displayed fine cooperation to make our class a success. MR. EDWARD J. DANEHY Assistant Superintendent of Schools Because of your untiring efforts and your great interest in the prob- lems that confronted us during our stay at Rindge we feel our tenure at Rindge has been made a much happier one. You showed us the right path to follow and warned us against the pitfalls and disaster that would follow taking the wrong path. For this, Mr. Kelleher, we shall forever be indebted. The Class of 1957 wishes for you, Mr. Kelleher, many years of health and happiness. MR. JOHN F. J. KELLEHER Assistant Headmaster Because of your untiring effort and great interest in the problems that confronted us during our years at Ringe and because it was you, Mr. Kelleher, that saw the rights and wrong in us, we are greatly indebted to you. The Class of 1957 will always remember you, Mr. Kelleher, as a man of high qualities, fair decisions and a man capable of leading our class to the road of success. It was through your kind advice that many of us reached our goal. The class wishes you many years of happiness and success. MR. WILLIAM H. MAHONEY Faculty Advisor MR. HENRY O. JOSEPH F. FRENI In the midst of life, there is death. One moment we see a dearly beloved face, we hear an encouraging and patient voice, rich in friendly overtones, we observe a kindly, gentle soul surrounded by his “boys,” and then he is no more, he is gone to “a bourne whence no traveller returns.” For over twenty years, he was a most important member of the Rindge faculty, giving generously of his accomplished musicianship to class after class of Rindge young men. He brought to his work an extraordinary patience and rare artistry as all of us were privileged to observe. He was a dedicated man. Life to him was not a narrow selfish corridor, lined with bias and prejudice, but rather a glorious adventure, an opportunity to display one’s brotherhood, to do acts of neighborliness, to aid the less fortunate, and to share with others the beauty of Creation. While his favorite medium of expression was music, he showed his fineness of character in many other ways, as his tremendous civic contributions eloquently testify. Joseph Frank Freni has taken his last morial bow, but the music of his beautiful life will be with us until the end of our days. God’s will be done. “THE CLASSLESS WILL”’ |, the spirit of the Class of 1957, residing in the hearts of the young men of Rindge Technical School, in the City of Cambridge, in the County of Middlesex, and State of Confusion, not being of sound mind and dis- posing memory do make, ordain, publish, and declare this to be my last will and testament. To the Freshman Class—We leave the pleasure of learning to open their lockers. To the Sophomores—We leave the Freshmen. To the Juniors—We leave those delicious cafeteria meals which we shall miss. To the Seniors of the Future—We leave the troubles and woes of writing a yearbook superior to this one. To Mr. McCabe—We leave many thanks for his invaluable assistance. To Mr. William Kelieher—We leave a new wing on Rindge for the sole use as a detention room. To Mr. John Kelleher—We leave the cafeteria in the same condition we found it. To Mr. Henry Delaney—We leave a copy of “How to Become a Success.” To Mr. Scott—We leave our undying gratitude. To Mr. Burke—We leave a new set of answers for his same old questions. To Mr. Mahoney—We leave a council that attends meetings once in awhile. To Mr. Creedon—We leave a do-it-yourself wood set. To Mr. Coughlan—We leave a copy of “The System.” To Mr. Parris—We leave a map which when followed will lead to infinity. To Mr. Sateriale—We leave reluctantly. To Mr. Jennings—We leave an interpreter. To all Rindge teachers we leave quickly, before they can change their minds about passing us. Lastly, | make, constitute, and appoint the Class of 1961 executor of this, my last will and testament. As Freshmen we were to experience many sporting thrills that the upperclassmen accomplished. For example, Charlie Stead took first place in the high jump which made Rindge the New England champions. Also it was our basketball team’s Silver Jubilee Year. As Freshmen, we had a pros- perous and very educational year. As we entered the Sophomore year with much knowledge and another year added to our lives, we were to be introduced to the technical aspects of life. It was this year that was to prove the most important of the four years because it helped us decide our future. As the months rolled by, Rindge’s track team again proved that it was the quickest and the best in New England. It was this year that Walter Brennan appeared on “This Is Your Life” and a trophy bearing his name was presented to the school to be given to the outstanding athlete of the year. Our Junior year arrived after a two weeks delay because of an outbreak of Polio throughout the State. It was this year that forced us to find out the importance of our social life around Rindge. Being in the Key Club or the Science Club gave us the opportunity to bring honor to Rindge. Sports-wise, our Class came in second in the State Track Meet and got a first place in the relay and dash. In our Junior year we also had the distin- guished Charlie Jenkins making his Alma Mater more widely known. Charlie set a new world record for the 500 in 56.4 seconds. Mr. Duffy had an article in the “Life Magazine” and was proclaimed “Best High School Track Coach.” June came along and we now had reached our peak which was to continue for one school year, this was to keep up the tradition of a highly honored Senior Class. The Senior year arrived and this was to be the most important year of our lives, for soon we would be on the threshold of life’s never-ending perilous journey. With it came the expectations of graduation. As the school year opened, our beloved bandmaster, Mr. Frank Freni, passed away, leaving many sorrows for his friends. But this news was offset by the great news of Charlie Jenkins winning the 400 meter race in the Olympics. In the month of May the Senior Class held a splendid and enjoyable Prom which had all the comparabilities of a college formal, delighting all those present. The eventful day arrived when we all had to make an unparalleled decision as to whether to further our education or seek a dependable occupation. As in the past our devoted headmaster, Mr. Francis T. McCabe had guided us fervently to this day. Forever we will remember him with our sincerest gratitude. To Mr. Francis McCabe and all the Faculty we thank them for their able guidance and understand- ing so that we could accomplish and reach the heights that we sought. 3 FOOTBALL TEAM Front row, left to right: Johnson, L.; Norton, R.; Zebal, W.; Cummings, W.; Oliver, E.; Cox, R.; McMann, G.; Nadeau, D.; Leary, E.; Motuzas, R.; Jackson, E. This year our team used both the “T’ formation and the single wing. We, as a very inexperienced team faced North Quincy, our first opponent, and although we were defeated we gave a splendid account of ourselves. In the follow- ing weeks Rindge encountered Watertown and Lawrence, two powerful teams, but with little success. In the next two games with Keith and Revere, the team showed tremendous improvement. The following week we played our finest game in two years by defeating Matig- non 26-6, with the whole team playing a tremendous game. The next week we lost a bitterly fought game with Swampscott. On Thanksgiving Day, our Warriors ran into some more hard luck again by los- ing to CHLS in a hard fought game. The following Seniors are leaving: Captain Dave Nadeau, Rodney Cox, Leonard Johnson, Neil Brooks, Eldridge Jackson, Robert Norton, George Elanjian, Richard Motuzas, James Flaherty, and William Zebal. a a, % : s , Dy ks cS Y) ff oa S BASKETBALL 1957 Front row, left to right: Jones, R.; Jones, S.; Washington, E.; Motuzas, R.; Mitchell, W.; Dottin, G. Third row: Mr. Thomas Murphy, Coach; Motuzas, E., Manager; ‘Doc’ Linsky, Trainer; Mr. Edward Culhane, Assistant Coach. BASKETBALL 1956-57 This past season was what one would call an in and out season. Sometimes our lads led for a while. Co-Captain Washington and Motuzas would get real “hot’’ and look like just about the best team around, while at other times they seemed lethargic. For a long time it looked like Ed Washington was going to break “Doug” Scholl's scoring record but close covering by his opponents nullified his chances as the sea- son neared its close. Seniors who performed well were Jones, Birt, Baldwin, Dottin, Zerofski, and Co- Captains Washington and Motuzas. Coach Murphy will find these lads hard to replace. Front row, left to right: McInnis, B.; McFaun, F.; Kendall, R.; Arnott, J.; Tansey, J.; Kelley, J. Back row: Coach John Powers with son, Willbrand, A.; Lewis, L.; Mclsaac, W.; Capt. Tom McCarthy, Parkhurst, R.; Belcomino, H.; McConnell, A.; McGinness, D.; Leary, Ed., Mgr. fy ft dick ote HOCKEY 1956-1957 At the start of the 1956-1957 season the prospects looked none too bright. Only one letterman in Capt. “Tom” McCarthy, appeared when candidates were called out. Again as was the case last year the number of candidates was small. For the first time in twenty years Rindge was under a new coach as Coach Mahoney retired in June. Two coaches were appointed to replace him. Coach John Powers was to handle the varsity and Coach Dick Kelley the newly organized Gram- mar School-Freshman team. After years of too little ice time this year’s squads had as much as six hours a week. So while this has been a rather disastrous season we can look forward to the future with confidence. 7 Yao TRACK 195 Front row, left to right: Coach Thomas Duffy; Robertson, C.; Coffil, R.; Jackson, E.; Brooks, N.; Nadeau, D., Capt.; Jackman, A.; Casey, K.; Bentubo, B.; Marsh, D. Second row: Belleza, T.; Banks, J.; Scott, D.; Grigsby, B.; Thomas, J.; Clark, J.; Gaul, R.; Adleson, R.; Carter, J. Third row: McLean, S.; Greenidge, G.; Norton, R.; Stamps, N.; Blackman, D.; Hewitt, R; Marshall, D.; Haywood, R.; Perry, J. TRACK 1956-57 Again this year Coach Duffy came up with a good track team. Although the team placed second in the B.A.A. Meet, the State Meet and the Met. League, this was due solely to Newton’s strength in the field events. We do not have the facilities at Rindge for these events, at least not the equal of Newton’s. The relay team broke the State Meet record by two-tenths of a second. The old record had been set by a Rindge relay team led by Charlie Jenkins. Seniors who performed well were Jackson, Banks, Nadeau, Belleza, and Norton. BASEBALL As we go to press before the baseball season starts all we can give is a brief preview. The baseball picture for school year 1957 does not appear to be too encouraging, for a large number of boys graduated last year. But returning from last year’s varsity squad are lettermen, “Butch’’ Motuzas, Paul Stryker, Rodney Cox, J. Gruhan, and Mike Menzes. i From the Jay-Vee squad such promising candidates as Tom McCarthy, ‘Topper’ McFaun, Pitcher “Zeke” Calkins and John Perry. While from the Freshman squad such players as Buzzy Mitchell and John Kapopoulos. From these boys and from many others, a representative team could be developed and a fairly successful season realized.
