This dedication, we believe shows how highly we treasure the friendship of this brilliant man—Francis T. McCabe. } Val Za ZA So YUyW Yy =f = Af ‘Mr. Francis T. McCabe Headmaster As We leave Rindge, we carry with us many fond memories of teachers and friends. Among our most cherished memories, however, is that of our Headmaster. Here is a man worthy of crowning a pedestal of life. Under his wise supervision and kindness we were able to absorb knowledge that has prepared us well for the future. His tireless efforts, genuine sincerity, and personal interest will undoubtedly be remembered throughout our lives. We would like to signify our appreciation by borrowing an expression he himself has used liberally in praising others; “Thank you, Mr. McCabe, for a splendid job.” Many successful and happy years as Headmaster. ee a £ ae Sent acacia Seems cs 7 ¢ ea ca nee Se tomes: ¥ Mr. John M. To those who might have needed discipline Mr. Kelleher might have seemed hard and merciless, but to those of us who needed help in finding our way around or choosing a course of study, Mr. Kelleher was always ready and willing to help. Mr. Kelleher, the graduating Class of 1955 deeply appreciates your kindness and we are sure that as we go into the world we will realize more fully the value of your counsel and guidance. 10 Mr. John F. J. Kelleher Assistant Headmaster Here is a man with an extra sense—one for handling boys with profitable results. His firm, just and equal treatment for all boys has made a solid impression on every individual in the graduating class. As Assistant Headmaster, his wise, thoughtful and experienced methods have conveyed a_ personal example which will accompany us throughout life. His teachings will play an important part in many decisions and undertakings which confront us along life’s path. Class Will We the Senior Class of 1955, of the Rindge Technical School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, being of unsound mind and body and aware of the fact that we will meet our end eventually, do hereby leave this document as our last will and testi- ment: To the Juniors we leave the privilege of being called Seniors. To the Silent Sophomores we leave our secret underground tunnel to Cambridge High Latin. To the Freshman we leave the thought of only “three” more years. To all future Rindge Men we leave the happiness of spending four years behind these gray walls, with a splended view of the school across the way and it’s lovely occupants. To Mr. McCabe we leave our wishes that he will spend many more years at Rindge as its wise and affable headmaster. To the both Mr. Kellehers we leave empty detention rooms, which the Seniors have so ably filled. To Mr. John Kelleher we leave a pair of roller skates so he can track down deten- tion room boys. To all the coaches we leave the difficult job of developing teams from the material they receive. To Mr. O'Connell we leave a History book entitled “A Rindge boy’s Outlook at History. In all sincerity we wish the teachers have had an enjoyable time teaching us as we have spent in learning. To Mr. Mahoney we leave the job of trying to develop a successful Senior Class. To Mr. Burke we leave the title of “Trigger.” . S To Mr. Fogg we leave a 2000 page joke book to replace the one he found in 1905S. To Mr. Wadden we leave one phonograph record entitled, “THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY.” . ‘ To Mr. Charles O’Connor we leave a self-tilting waste basket, which will make it e twice as easy to kick papers under it. ‘ To To Mr. Jennings we leave a ton of plexiglass. To Mr. Powers we leave an entire library of modern Christmas plays. To Mr. Eugene Fitzgerald we leave the wonderful job of chasing around after lost English books. Also to Mr. Powers we leave the title of “THE BEST DRESSED MAN OF 55.” Having now disposed of all our worldy posssessions, we do hereby subscribe our names as representatives of the Class of 1955. “The Class of 1955” Class History We the Class of 1955 feel it only fitting and proper that we make this brief record of events that have taken place here at Rindge in the past four years. On September 6, 1951 we became students at Rindge. To the upper classmen we were only simple little freshmen and nothing more. Many of us became lost during our first few days at Rindge, but as time went on we became familiar with this great building. As freshmen we elected Charlie Stead as president of our class. We placed many men on various sports teams; to name only a few, men like Edward Collymore, Lawrence Smith,Charlie Stead, and Pau! Anderson. During our freshman year we suffered a great loss when Mr. Wiseman passed away. Mr. Shea return- ed to Rindge to take Mr. Wiseman’s place. As summer came upon us we were most anxious to leave Rindge, but more was our anxiety to return and start a new year in a few months. After our first and very interesting year at Rindge, we re-entered the school as sophomores. We were now a little older, and a little better able to understand the problems of life. We now began to look at ourselves to find out who would be our athletes, our academic stu- dents, and our class officers. In choosing the president from the many boys who were well suited for the position, our number one choice was “Charlie” Stead, who also proved to be a track star along with “Eddie” Collymore and “Larry” Smith, just to mention a few. The boy who topped the list as our highest aca- demic student was Jay Mahoney, a favorite among all boys at Rindge. Spring came soon and was quickly followed by the end of the sophomore year. We now looked forward to becoming juniors, and most of us were determined to go higher in all respects. Come September 10 we re-entered Rindge as jun- iors. We realized that we had only one year to go. After this one, when we would graduate from Rindge. During our junior year we were confronted with the sudden death of Mr. Charles G. Harrington, assistant superintendent of schools, and Mr. Samuel J. Cohen, teacher of chemistry at Rindge. 61 In the field of sports we made history that will live on long after we have left Rindge. Our football team defeated Cambridge High and Latin in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game by a score of 20 to 0. Our junior varsity fooiball team ended its season undefeated untied, and unscored upon. In track, men like Charlie Stead, Edward Collmore, and Lawrence Smith brought to Rindge the honor of being the New England champions. Our junior year is slowly coming to an end, but we have left behind us a year of which we can be rightfully proud. September came once again, and we prepared to enter Rindge as seniors. We were destined to have the most successful dances in Rindge’s long history. The senior council and senior dance committee are due a great deal of credit for the efficient manner in which they conducted the many senior activities. A great deal of our success is due to the unselfish efforts on the part of Mr. William H. Mahoney, our faculty advisor, who worked right along with the councilors. In sports we lost our football game to Latin, but the Rindge spirit was there and that’s what counts. The players played their hearts out and certainly were a credit to Rindge. We made up for this loss in the many other athletic activities in which the sc’ ool participated. Again as in the past years our track team has given a splendid account of itself. On June 9, 1955 the doors of Rindge will close be- hind us for the last time. Some of us will continue our education at college, and others will go out into the world as factory workers, office workers, and members of the armed services. Wherever we go, or whatever we do, we will al ways look back with pride and cherished remembrances of the school days we spent here at Rindge. YEAR BOOK STAFF FRONT ROW: Faculty Advisor William H. In the Fall, Mr. Boudreau along with his assistants Dick Charl- ton (formerly of Boston College) and Robert Jutas (formerly of Rindge) set out to de- velop a team which could face such opposition. After losing our first two games to Newton and Leominster, people began to notice that we had a small squad and wanted to know the reason. When the crisis about drop- ping football at Rindge became evident, students became enthusiastically interested and a flood of new candidates reported to bolster the squad. The following Saturday the newly spirited team made a fine showing against Water- town. After bowing to Lawrence Central, we came back to defeat Keith Academy of Lowell 33 to 6. This game was won for Mr. Lynch who was due to enter the hospital and the winning ball was presented to him by the co-captains after the game. In the following weeks we met Everett and Malden Catholic before crushing New Bedford 29 to 0. The Thanksgiving Game was postponed to the following Sunday. The bitterly fought game which provided an interesting afternoon for those present was won by C.H.L.S. Although the season record shows 2 wins and 7 losses it does not explain the great odds and obstacles the team overcame. The following Seniors leaving are: Co-captains W. Howell, P. Marcin, and J. Basketball Team Coach Mr. Thomas J. Murphy Our 1954-1955 basketball team proved to be one of the best in the history of our great school. For the second consecutive year it was the winner of the Suburban League Title. Newton and Cambridge Latin proved to be our toughest rivals, with Newton and Rindge being tied for the league lead for most of the season. Our other loss to Arlington was an upset in which the absence of the injured Rudy Williams was sorely felt. Due to the splendid coaching of Coach Murphy the team brought honor and glory in its many good performances on the courts. This season saw Douglas Scholl shattering the Suburban League record of 230 points by scoring 244 points. The starting five consisted of seniors George Thompson and Charlie Stead, who were the co-captains, and juniors Doug Scholl, Rudy Williams and Ron Lavie. Other seniors were Lawrence Stanford, Leo Walcott, Robert Maliewski and Arthur Tracy. Out of the twelve games played on the regular seasonal schedule our team won 9 and lost 3. Mc- Hockey 54-55 This year having six returning lettermen, Crocker, Lech, McKinley, MacGilvray, Hamlin, and Eichelroth, we anticipated a more or less favorable season. However, due to lack of practice and injuries in the latter part of the season this did not hold true. The only bright parts of our season were when we played our arch-rivals, C.H.L.S. In our first contest we downed them 2-1. Roger Hamlin blasted in the first goal un- assisted, and a minute after the game was tied up and 66 seconds before the final bell Bob McKinley on a pass from Jack MacGilvray lifted in the winning goal. Credit for this game should also go to Capt. Bob Crocker and Hank Lech who gave it their usual best. Our last game of the season against C.H.L.S. proved to be our best of the year. Although we lost Bob Crocker early in the first period, and starting center Roger Hamlin was sidelined with an injury our team inspired by our star goalie Hank Lech went on to victory. Jack MacGilvray got the first goal and Paul Eichelroth collected the next two, one of which he was assisted by Fran Mahoney. The final was 3-1. We, the members of the graduating class, would now like to wish Coach Mahoney lots of luck and success with his future teams. Capt. Bob Crocker was the only member from Cambridge to make the G.B.I. All-Star squad. Individual Scoring. Players G A Pts. MacGilvray l 1 2 MacKinley 4 0 4 Bourgeois 1 l 2 Eichelroth 3 0 3 Crocker 0 l 1 Hamlin 1 2 3 Mahoney 0 1 1 73 TRACK TEAM FIRST ROW: L. Wingood, D. Track Team We looked forward to our track season with great expectations; for we proudly carried many titles into competition with us. It was our purpose to defend them to the best of our ability. On New Year’s Day, under the able direction of our Coach, Mr. Thomas Duffy, we took our first step towards defending our title by defeating Newton. From there we went on undefeated in the ‘Met’ League duel meets to win the Metropolitan League champion- ship. During the “Met” League, seniors Lawrence Smith, Charles Stead, Captain Edward Collymore, and junior Joseph Elder went undefeated in their events. In the B.A.A. meet held at the Boston Garden, R. Gibson, L. Smith, C. Stead, E. Collymore, D. Nadeau, R. Buchanan, and J. Elder supplied us with enough points to win In the State meet, the same boys along with R. Stanton scored points for Rindge. Due to illness, Smith and Nadeau were unable to run. Rindge having to win the relay to win the meet started on towards victory. There occurred an unfortunate collision between the second and third men. This caused us to place second in the meet. On February 18th, Joseph Elder, Lawrence Smith, and Edward Collymore, along with their coach, Mr. Duffy, left from New York to represent Rindge in the Nationals at Madison Square Garden. At this meet Joseph Elder won the 60 yard dash and Edward Collymore won the 440 yard run. Although Lawrence Smith was unable to qualify in the 1000 yard event, Rindge with 10 points won the Nationals. However, all praise to the man mainly responsible for the glorious victory, our coach, Mr. Tom Duffy, for without him, we would never have returned as National champions. 74 CAPT. Jack Bourgeois at third base and Dave McPhelim at second base. Ably assisting Coach Gibson this year will be cap- tain and catcher Frank Moretti. The following seniors are expected to make their bid for the varsity this year; Bob Buchanan, Larry Stan- ford, “Soupie” Walcott, Ron Tracy, and John Ryan.
