Wood, who has faithfully served in the above capacity for so many years. All the honors we could bestow on him would not suffice that which we as a whole owe him. He, because of his cultural and scholastic attainment, because of his undying and ever increasing enthusiasm for all good pertaining to Rindge is loved not only by this class, but by everyone who has gone on before and all who come behind us. He has a true understanding of the boys he meets, and imparts to all who know him an ideal to look to and a model to follow. It is to him, the present day father of Rindge, that we, the sons of Rindge affectionately dedicate this volume. Mr. JOHN W. WOOD Headmaster page five page six Prologue Here at Rindge we planted the seed of a better life. The associations of our four years will bear fruit in a more complex world outside. Therefore we cherish the memories of four happy years at Rindge, and this Year Book will serve to supply a visible bond containing as it does a record of the accomplishments of our class. We have reason to be proud of these accomplishments having displayed fine cooperation to make our class a success. Ave VA | ar ks Ns Pos WEREDE RICK | H. McCABE Because of your untiring efforts and great interest in the problems that con- fronted us in our four years at Rindge, Mr. McCabe, and because it was you that saw and pointed out the rights and wrongs in us, we are greatly indebted. The class of 1950 will always remember you, Mr. McCabe, as a man of high qualities and decisions, capable of leading any class up the road to success. It was through your kind advice and your tireless councel that we have come this far toward our goal. The class of 1950 wishes to convey to you its sincere hope that you enjoy many years of happiness and success. MR. WILLIAM J. KELLEHER Immediately upon entering Rindge four years ago we were informed by the upperclassmen to look out for one man. In all probability those who told us this were trouble makers, for William J., affectionately called “Big Bill” Kelleher, is not one to “look out for” but a man to respect and admire. As the days and then years pass we came to fully appreciate the value of the man to our Alma Mater. His advice and councel helped us to see our goal more clearly. He brought us back abruptly and decisively when we chanced to stray from the path of “righteousness.” When our spirits were low he helped to bring us back and encouraged us to go on. We will never forget what this man has done for us. His benevolent attitude, both disciplinary and advisory, has served to make us, we hope, a class of boys soon to become men that Rindge will always be proud to call her own. page eleven MR. WRB page sixty-six fa CLASS PROGNOSTICATIONS E Zp = a. aan —————— SS Senter (lass frafhecy January 18, 1980 While Jackson and I rode on our magic carpet on our tour of the world, we happened to stop in San Francisco and went to the business men’s banquet. To our surprise on the main platform stood the great historian, William Vargus, opening with a two hour speech. On his left sat Mr. Salvato, the great toy tycoon and on his right sat Frank “Buck” Spinosa, explorer of the universe and discoverer of “‘the ice bomb.” When the liquor for the toast was served I could see Joseph J. Barbera. Michelangelo of the 20th century open his eyes wide and watch the waiter. In the corner stood “Butch” Budreau, famed coach of Southern California, John Kaminski, wild animal tamer, Timothy Foley, “King” of the underworld and Warren O’Connor of the F.B.I. in conversation. On our left was David Yee of “The Yee, Yu and Yee Circus” along with James Golding arguing politics. Jackson hit me and as I turned, I noticed Carmen Sampson entering with Delilah. Later, we left the banquet, journeyed to China and visited the Royal Palace where we saw Agha Khan Mahoney on his throne with his trusted servants: Casper Trammentozzi Geerer and W. Boudreau at his side. Upon arriving in England, we were greeted by the air conditioning typhoon, John Chronouski with the master chemist who invented a super gasoline, Paul Coughlan. On his right was George Souza in his gold plated Chevrolet and Joseph Datteno, head of the House of Commons. Also the head of the turbo jet helmet, Corte and Joseph Anselmo the man who is responsible for this “‘out of the world” Studebaker of our age. Tony Ruggieri, the manufacturer of “combs for England” and John Traquellis, the chemistry professor, were all part of the welcoming committee. That night we went to Harry Jones’ of the Jones, Najinian, Smith and Fratta Window Wash- ing Co. The guests were announced as they entered: His majesty, John W. Wood of the King’s Royal Court; Mr. Arthur Avakian, electrical engineer; Robert Zapaznik, head of the military police. Mr. Jerry Sugrue, assistant to the police chief. The guests came in droves. Some faces were familiar while some were not. There was John L. Sullivan, world’s olympic track crown holder for ten straight years. Last, but not least, to enter was Mr. C. Harrington, King of the Land. The time was a big success and before leaving for the United States, we went to see Earnest Casey of the Associated Press of Ireland. Then to see Joseph Doherty, the man about Dublin and owner of the Irish Cafe on Kouslawski Street in that city. Back in America While going over Maine, we saw Kenneth Jones (the artist) painting the white line down the middle of the main street in Portland. Upon arriving in Boston, we were greeted by “Hizzoner” J. Panzino. While walking down Washington Street, we saw the Jordan Marsh Co. sign being taken down and in its place a sign saying Robert Rose and Co. The crowd then pushed us toward a subway station which read O’Brien’s Subway Service, to the Eagan International Airport where we disimbarked for New York. Ah! Yes! It’s great to be born and to have made such a trip to see the boys in 1980. page sixty-eight taal A ae ¢ ? ¥ . Jones page seventy-six (Mass ftisteny By James MacDonald and Charles Marden The material that came in Rindge Technical High School in the fall of 1946 will never be equalled. There were 318 geniuses of industrious, dominative, superior, extraordinary, unmatchable, conquering, skillful, ungoverned, unsubdued, low quality. In fact 14 were on the honor roll. When they arrived they were dazzled by the school and marveled at the well equipped laboratories, the spotlessness of the shops, the magnificant architecture, the well constructed auditorium and gym- nasium, and the very high and efficient quality of the teachers at the Latin School across the way. We started the year off right with many of the boys going out for athletics. In fact 9914 of the boys out for freshman sports were freshman. ‘This shows they were strong athletic supporters. Some freshmen, when asked how they liked Rindge, said Rindge is all right but we miss girls. So many boys had to get glasses that the nurse told them not to study so hard. The freshmen are so rugged. The nurse only used 301 bottles of aspirin to keep them well. The boys liked Rindge so much that one boy in every home room came to school every day without dungarees and with a necktie in his pocket to show Rindge was socially acceptable. Most of the boys excelled in punctuality. Only 491% of the boys were late every day. The other 511% came later. 1 think the outstanding freshman of the year was Charles Rindgenburg who won the inter- scholastic card playing and dice shooting tournament for Rindge. In the sophomore year they were still as soft as ever, but they were upper classmen and were growing up. (physically that is.) [I was amazed at the wonderful job they were doing the first term. Most of them were only flunking two or three subjects apiece. Taking things in stride and to prove that they were reaching maturity many went out for sports (girl’s drill team) to prove their ability. They stayed after school constantly with Mr. Kelleher to make up for periods at which they did not attend. They of course liked school very much. During the year they managed to get to school every day except when they were sick (sick of school). ‘They were beginning to like the stuff they sell in the lunchroom. They call it food, I think. A couple of teachers told the boys that Rindge has spirit, but no one knows where to find it. Rindge is a Class A High School. In the junior year we officially got into the act. We were supposed to be juniors and a better word would be juveniles. We started the year unusually everyone seemed interested in Rindge. Maybe because they were in the homestretch and they might have wanted to exert a last effort and final drive to be proud. We elected a junior council and class officers. All the classes had to take I. Q. tests to show how intelligent they were and they bowled them over. One boy even passed. Boys are not allowed to run in the corridors. A teacher stopped a boy and asked him why he was running. His joking reply was that the bat man was chasing him. This shows that at least the teachers are good Joe’s and take boys as the proverbial saying goes, “Boys will be boys.” The outstanding athlete this year was Oliver Percy Willis. He won the wrestling chamionship. He defeated Jane Russell and Mae West. (Lucky day), an outstanding student was Joseph Inkwell who could take a lathe apart and put it together again with just a few parts left over. Of course it didn’t run, but what the heck, few of them do. page seventy-seven In the senior class came the master extorsionist who would stoop to any level for credits. ‘The senior class did exceptionally well the first two dances. They made about $30.00 on each class dance. Seniors supported their class. They packed the gymnasium for the basketball games, and they swamped our beautiful, magnificent, stadium at Russell Field. The hockey team almost won the G. B. I. Championship. Janet Leigh, the famous movie actress, came to Rindge one day for a visit. The boys stared at her for about ten minutes, and when they looked up they found that she was pretty too. The boys were not tired of the teachers, they were not tired of books. they knew they were going to miss their dear old Alma Mater, so thirty-two decided to stay another year. In addition to the dances we ran, the boys had a song poll. They ran a talent night and they also had a sport’s night. The class had a Senior Reception with the Latin School at M. I. T. The final day arrived, the men received their diplomas and punched their last time clock at dear old Rindge. Although we kidded about the school, most of us will look back on our school days (with a smile on our faces) and remember the fun and friends we had. Speaking for ourselves we enjoyed, our stay at Rindge very much, and we know most of the other boys did, too. In our closing line we want to wish all the seniors of 1950 a bright and cheerful future with a lot of good luck for the years to come. Fratto, Nauss, Jones, Wilson FOOTBALL By BOUDREAU Rippling with latant power and moving on swift-pinioned hoofs, Rndge Tech mounted a 1949 football assault that beyond question rated about any recen t Tech pigskin congreagtion. Their victory potentials were ruggedly superior to those of the past ten years. Fratto and company carded a 6-3-0 record over the course, which on first glance is not overly impressive. But when all the factors of the three defeats are considered it is an amazing victory total for an undermanned, un- supported eleven, no matter how courageous they may be. Captained by the brilliant Ed Fratto, Rindge toppled such football machines as B. C. High, Keith Academy, Woburn, Chelsea, Norwood, and traditional rival, Cambridge Latin. Four of their six conquests were shutouts. They were held scoreless only once, by Class A, Leominster. Rindge garnered 166 points to their opponents 80, in their 61st season. Tech came from 18th place in 1947 and 12th place in 1948 to 7th position in 1949 in the Class B race. They collected 44 points in the standings and finished with a 4:89 rating. Fratto led the scoring parade with 44 points, followed closely by Junior flash Larry Haley with 42. Harry Jones and Billy O’Connell each had 24 points for third place in individual scoring on the club. Blond Billy Boudreau scored 13 points and Hassell, Wallace, and Magnarelli scored the rest. Fratto, Eliopolous and Steinkrauss made the Boston Surburban All Stars that triumphed over the North Shore All Stars (20 to 12) and Charlotte N. C. All Stars (39 to 6). O’Keefe TRACh ROBERT BURNS Due to the efforts of Coach Duffy, and the enthusiasm of Captain Larry: Haley, our team made a marvelous recovery after having lost the first few me ets in the Metropolitan League by slight margins. In the State Meet, our team tied for third place. Jack Sullivan came through with first place in the 1000, and the rest of the points were scored by Larry Haley (3rd in the 300), and Burleigh Beckles (fourth in the 50 yd. dash). Because of his showing in this meet, Sullivan was selected to compete in the Nationals in New York, where, breaking all of his previous records, he finished fifth in the 1000 among some of the toughest competition in the country. The only one to score points in the G. B. I. meet was Billy O’Connell, who ran second in a record-breaking 300. Also in this meet, our junior relay team (second fastest time in the trials) was disqualified. To wind up the indoor season, Rindge defeated its rival, Cambridge Latin, 4714 to 2714 with good team work on the part of the entire team. With the outdoor season nearing, let us all wish the Track Team as much luck. page eighty-five Back row — Mr. Henry C. Lynch, Faculty Manager, George W. Robert Peloquin was ill when picture was taken HOCKEY By BOUDREAU Above this write up you see a group picture of a hockey team that fate has refused to smile on for three straight years. You see one of the greatest lines in G. B. I. history: Mulrey, Peloquin and Duffy. They won five games, lost three and tied two. ‘They finished in a three way tie with Medford and Stoneham for third place this year. They finished the way they began, ill-starred stepsons of Lady Chance. The Imp of Injury was their most potent foe. Mulrey , Duffy, Nolan, Caty and Cusick were all injured within the space of three weeks. Mulrey led the team in the scoring department and was the holder of their place in the leagues leading scorers with six goals and eight assists for 14 points. Peloquin had seven goals and six assists for 13 points. Duffy lit fire behind the opposing net nine times and had four assists for 13. All three were in the top ten scorers at the end of the season. Dick Burns of Stoneham had 11 goals and 8 assists for the individual scoring crown. The week after Melrose won the title the All Star Team was selected. ‘The first line of Mulrey, Peloquin, and Duffy remained intact for both All Star games, which saw the G. B. I. aggregation triumphant over Montreal Catholic and the Bay State All Stars. Defenseman Tommy Cusick made the All Star Seconds. Bobby Ellard in the Tech nets was beaten 27 times, which was one more goal than his mates could collect. Bob Caty was one of the outstanding defensemen in the league. What can we say except good luck and good bye to the finest, gamest gang of guys we’ve ever had the pleasure to write. page eighty-six Left to right, back row — Henry Lynch, Faculty Manager, Francis Lynch, Manager, Roland Ferguson, Edward Fratts, Capt., William Gayton, Francis Bingham, David Creedon, Assistant Coach, Thomas J. One of their few wins, however, was a face saving, return game victory over rival Cambridge Latin. Captain Ed Fratto led the team in scoring with 34 field goals and 23 fouls for 91 points. Billy Boudreau hooped 34 goals and 13 fouls for 81. Guiliano with 77, Nestor 66, and Bingham 55 points were 3, 4, and 5 in the top five Tech scorers. Rindge’s twenty-first season in Suburban League basketball saw Waltham High walk off with their second straight crown on an impressive 11 and | record. Rindge finished in a sixth place tie with Latin School. Their 2 and 10 record is not a true measure of their ability by any means. They scored 430 points against 492 for the opposition. The sudden realization that upon graduation we will no longer be a part of our school, but that now it will be a part of us, is stunning in its initial affect. We may, each of us, meet again, as we walk the broad highways and shadowed byways of the earth. Some will gain only dust; some will grasp success. Nevertheless there will always remain within us, somewhere, a vivid memory of better days, fleeting days when hearts were high and hopes were unconquerable; of four years at Rindge. This Year Book has been compiled so that those memories will not fade. So that they may be renewed in depressing times when the four walls of today seem towering enough to enclose you forever, when you need memories and one more tomorrow. We, the staff, have tried to the best of our ability to collect all those things that you might like to remember, and have endeavored to make the book one you willtreasure till this vail of tears is past. We hope we have not failed. To each and every one of you we extend our most hearty con- gratulations on graduating. And the best of luck in the years beyond. 30 comes hard. Good luck, goodbye and God bless you. WRB page ninety-three page ninety-four Chulegue Our work is done — and we hope we have done it fittingly, but. our limita- tions are manifold and our best but poorly expresses the love we cherish for our be- loved school.
