As we step from our rocket taxi we are completely overwhelmed by the modernistic structure which stands before us. Before we have time to study the fine structure, we are taken by the arm and led into the reception hall by our former class president, Paul Doherty. At first we find out very little about Paul, except that he was recently voted into the State Senate. In our conversa- tion with him we learn that our old friend and classmate Red McConnell, has obtained the position in Rindge, that formerly belonged to Mr. Kelleher. As we approach a nearby room, we hear one of the latest popular tunes. As we listen to this music our curiosity grows, and we finally make our way into the room where we see Manuel Ponte, crooning to the music of Bob Haak’s Orchestra. As the music ceases we see coming toward us Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pelrine. We notice that his charming wife is the lovely C.H.L.S. belle, whom he used to escort home after 2:06. Ed is a prosperous business man in charge of an office at Lever Brothers plant. We take occasion to gaze out the window, where we see Alan MacDonald and Joe Moran alight- ing from their latest model car. Al is the Chief Designer for the Cadillac car company, while Joe holds the position of Chief Mechanic in the same company. We see also Kenneth Carr entering; he is now the class millionaire, having made his fortune selling stock bonds to tourists. At this point our host announces that dinner is to be served immediately in the new Rindge dining room. When we enter we see a very elaborately set table, and standing at the far end of the dining hall we discern the very broad smile on our caterer, whom we recognize as our former class- mate Richard LaVach | From the other side of the room, someone calle out, “JOE, JOE SIMAS!” A bit startled, we look up to discover Joe standing in the door way. His apologies for being late are drowned out by a loud applause. The news reaches us that Joe is at present working in South America as an official representative of the United States Diplomatic Service. The noise subsides and our Master of Ceremonies, Paul Doherty, is on the platform before us, about to read a few telegrams from absent classmates. “Forty -niners, It is with great regret that I am unable to attend our class reunion, as [ have to deliver a scheduled lecture on ““Atomic Theory” to some students at M.I.T. Sincerely, Professor S. Tanenholtz” “Dear Gang, Because broken legs will keep people down, here I am in the hospital. Yours truly, George Reid” “Old-timers, So sorry that | am unable to attend our reunion, but I am leaving tonight by plane for Africa, where I hope to shoot a few leopards for my wife’s new coat. As ever, Ray Sylvia” page sixty-eight We find Herby Banham, blushing as always, as he tells us that he may soon be seen in his new picture “Man’s Paradise,” based on Richard Hayden’s latest novel of the same name. Paul now introduces our speaker of the evening, his honor John J. Foley, Mayor of Cambridge, more fa miliarly known as “Jack.” In the course of an interesting talk, Mayor Foley brings to light the outstanding work being done by the City Manager, Al LaRonde, who is always trying to build a better City Government. Herb Banham now takes the stage and introduces our guest pianist, Dick Johnson. During his performance, though ovecrome with awe, everyone realizes how far he has progressed since June 1949. When Dick finishes and silence falls upon the room, Paul tells us that the program is completed and we are free to tour the building and grounds. As we stroll from room to room, we notice the very unusual but attractive architectural de- sign of the school. While admiring its beauty we hear that the architect and builder of the school was our classmate Jim Howard. To Jim goes many hearty congratulations. Leaving the building, we wander on to the athletic field where our old library once stood. It does not take us long to realize that Nevino Morosini’s ability, as a landscape architect and play ground designer, is quite superior. It is no wonder that Walter Johnson has remained here as the physical education instructor, for the facilities are more than “Stretch” ever dreamed of. As we wander back in the direction of the building, we are attracted to a group of our class- mates one of whom we recognize to be Larry Doo. — Larry is the newly appointed U. S. Ambassador to China. The others we see are Philip Flynn, and the Tremblay brothers, Roland and Paul. Phil is the Athletic Trainer of the Cambridge High Schools, while Paul and Roland are now mem- bers of the Harvard Faculty. Both are professors who are amazing their students with their re- cently published book “Tremblay’s Chardenal.” As Larry has to leave early, we walk back to the reception hall with him, and bid him fare- well. After this, we hear a voice which sounds very familiar to us. It sounds like the voice of Leonard Francoeur, Attorney at Law. We hasten across the room to join the group. We arrive in time to discover Lenny discussing one of the latest “foreign policies” with Eddie Collins who is a foreign correspondent for a radio network. Although it is impossible to see Eddie at either his Washington or Berlin offices, he can be heard over Station WVMS Monday, Wednesday and Fr!- day evenings at seven o’clock EST. We decide to sit down for a while to rest our weary bones, and glance around the room to see the smiles and frowns on our famous alumni group. Our eyes come to rest on two figures sitting on the sofa next tous. ‘They are two prominent figures in the sports world, John Bluthardt, Football coach at Northwestern, and John Morrison, Football coach at U.C.L.A. We understand that the flowers decorating the speakers stand, came from the Floral Shop of Danforth, Daurie, and McGillicuddy’s “Little Bear,” located in the heart of Brookline. At this point in the procedeings the following old-timers arose and introduced themselves: Gordan Bennett, Captain in the Marines; Fred Maxwell, editor of the Chicago Sun, Medley Wood; manager of Boston’s Western Union Office, and Carl Jacobsen, property manager for M.G.M. Studios. We walk to the refreshment table, where Richard Nilson, bartender at the Stork Club, has also offered his services tonight. Whitey enlightens us with the information that Donald, Green, is on a world tour playing Grieg’s Concerto in A Minor, while Dudley Johnson is head steward on the new Atomic Queen Mary. We further learn that Dan Kelly, William Patton, and Harry Norton, are co-owners of the Jet Trucking Company. Joseph Murphy, President of the Cambridge Trust Company, approaches to tell us that out taxi is waiting outside. Before we leave we say good-by to some of our old teachers, who are guests: As we enter our taxi, we are thoroughly convinced that this will be a night to remember for a long long time. Still unable to gain the place in the sun that they inhabited so long ago, Rindge still showed signs of the long waited re- juvination and hope for greener years to come. A four won, four loss and one tie record against such giants as they staggered along their way to glory — teams like Dedham, Somerville, Chelsea and powerful Class “A” Leominster — is a tremendous upswing from the discouraging slates com- piled in the few preceeding years. John Morrison, senior standout of the club, played ball that can only be termed brilliant and inspired all yearlong. Accounting for 22 of the 52 points compiled by the Brown and White, Galligan coached club, Morrison is one of the finest place kickers to come along the schoolboy pike in many “moons.” Bob Bennett who played tackle, Frank Perry a tackle, James Smith another line man, John Bluthardt first string center, Ralph Eaton and Joe Heaney are other senior standouts that struck with the Varsity. Jn winning against Leominster, Waltham, St. Clements and die hard rival Cambridge Latin, Tech was a near perfect gridiron machine. Sparked by Morrison and a couple of juniors cognomened Fratto and Boudreau, Rindge held the beautiful balance of conquest numerous times. In losing to Newton, Chelsea, Brookline and Somerville and tying Dedham, Lady Luck fired the sun set gun when her ill-starred stepsons from Cambridge were but hairs breadth away from the dividing line between hailed victory and oblivious defeat. This team was by far the gamiest to don uniforms for Tech for many years. Never did they quit and that’s the truth. I watched them. Coach Ted Galligan worked a minor miracle with the material he had on hand. ‘This is no reflection. on their ability, there just weren’t enough of them out. Yes, the senior class can be proud of the young gentlemen that represented them on the chalk marked field of football carnage in this season of 1948. And, hoping that you seniors who read this will follow the fortunes of your alma maters’ pigskin forces, | want to say, Good Luck, Good Bye and God Bless You, the Class of 49. a é 4 3 2 i 4 | 4 fe ss : ci costae TRACK First Row —L. to R. — J. Lynch, Faculty Manager TRACh On your mark, now set, Go; These were the words that started the 1949 track team on its semi-successful season. Every afternoon, warm or cold, you would find the track squad on the boards in back of Cambridge Latin, for another strenuous practice. This year Rindge was invited to join the newly formed Metropolitan Track League. The league consisted of eight teams, Malden Catholic, Revere, Concord, Arlington, Cambridge Latin, North Quincy, Watertown and Rindge. Rindge drew Malden Catholic for its first opponent downing them 67-25. In the weeks to follow Rindge also beat Concord 48-29, Revere 52-25, North Quincy 41-36 while losing to Arlington 63-15, Watertown 53-26, Cambridge Latin 40-37. Considering what Humphrey O’Leary had to work with, he did a wonderful job. When the season started he had but only two lettermen returning, these were Capt. Danny Kelly and Larry Haley. The team now goes outdoors where they have dual meets with Cambridge Latin, Somer- ville, Newton, Boston Tech, and Watertown. Seniors to make their letter are — Daniel Kelly, Fred Maxwell, George Clark, Carl Jacobson, Alex Jackson, Mack Jim Smith. Milers — John L. When these two factors are combined with inexperience it spells a bad season. This is exactly what happened. R indge started off with a loss to Arlington but they only had seven men. This was due to the fact that three players were not eligible because of the three months rule. The next week with still only seven men, they beat Melrose. Against Latin School everyone was eligible and Rindge beat them along with tying Medford the week before. Then Rindge collapsed, they just couldn’t seem to click. They couldn’t win another game but they did succeeded in tying Stoneham and ending the year with 2 wins, 6 losses and two ties to end in sixth place. Jim Duffy made the first team all-scholastic and Dick Peloquin made the second team. Next year they should have the experience to be in the fight all the way. page eighty-seven BASKETBALL First Row — L. to R. — J. es Ee ale J. Bluthardt, J. Renna, G. Cosmopoulos, W. Boudreau, R. Lynch, Faculty Manager BASKETBALL The Rindge Basketball Team suffered an off season. The technicians won 4 games and lost 8. This resulted in a tie for the city champiomship title. The scores of the two games won by Rindge were 39 to 38 and 27 to 22. Latin beat Rindge in one game by the score of 41 to 30. These three games made Rindge the city champions. Rindge then beat the Arlington Five by a 39 to 33 margin but lost the out of town game by 40 to 22. Next Brookline upset Rindge in both games played by scores of 36 to 31 and 41 to 27. Rindge then rallied and beat Newton at home by 37 to 36 but lost the return match by 45 to 25. Waltham, the Surburban League champions, slaughtered Rindge with scores of 49 and 64 to our 26 and 38, This was‘a really sad blow and probably had its effects on the Rindge losing to Water- town by the score of 34 to 36. Rindge seems to have won most of their home games and although they did not win any of the out of town games, the Technicians showed good spirit and good sportmanship. page eighty-eight BASEBALL Front — A. collozzi, D. Caach BASEBALL Rindge starts preparation for the 1949 baseball season with high hopes, although all the teams in the Suburban League will be strong this year. Captain Raineri’s team will be made up of nine veterans from last years team. ‘There are enough graduates from the Junior Varsity to give the veterans plenty of competition. In fact one or two of them may displace veterans. If no one slips, the infield should be composed of Frank Steinkrauss at first, Jim Mulrey at second, Dan Budwit at third, Captain Raineri at short. It is going to be hard to keep Harry Jones out of this infield however. There are four men fighting for the three outfield positions — Larry Haley, John Morrison, Dan Murphy, and Bill Boudreau. The pitching field is wide open. Only Walter Johnson and Dan Murphy being assured of positions. It is hoped Donald Collins will be the catcher. James Tsiklis, Fred Lukas, Dink Farrel, Ed Fratto, and one or two other Juniors have a good chance of breaking into the line up. All in all it looks like a good year, if there are no injuries. “‘Good Luck” Mr. McLaughlin and here is hoping your team can bring new glory to the name of Rindge. page eighty-nine Talent Nite page n inelty-one . page ninety-two Chilegue It is with sorrow that we, the members of the Senior Class of 1949, must leave Rindge after four years of what seemed to be an everlasting pleasure. Many names, faces, and happenings will have a place in our minds as we read this memorial years from now: Paul, Ralph, Joe and many others will live with us as we think of the things we used to do. And it is with this purpose that the Senior Yearbook Committee has worked to make this the best yearbook that any Rindge senior class has ever had.
