Woop RINDGE TECH SCHOOL Wiz ay: mat F, A WW w p JDO OW KE TRON: As WE PREPARE to take our leave of Rindge, we cannot help but feel a tinge of sadness at leaving behind one who has been our guiding light for the last four years. Throughout our stay here, you were al- ways ready to lend a helping hand to those who needed it, sacrificing your time so that our road to knowledge would be an easier one. We shall never forget you, Mr. Wood, even though we may be far from here. Time may erase landmarks but time can never erase the ever- lasting memory of the man who filled the difficult task of being both a friend and a headmaster. Your kind and deep understanding of boys and their troubles endeared all that came in contact with you. We leave Rindge as one of the many graduating classes and add our names to those who count yours as a friend- ship whose influence shall be always felt. With humble respect, the Class of 1940 dedicates the “Brownie” of 1940 to Mr. John W. Wood. He has demanded a respect from us for the school, teachers, and traditions. Mr. Conlin has been with Rindge for thirty-five years, during which he has served as an instructor of French and Spanish. He is at present time Assistant Head- master of our beloved Alma Mater. Throughout every one of these thirty-five years you, Mr. Conlin, have been an indispensable figure in the administration of this school. Mr. Conlin—We the class of ’40 salute you. 1940 RINDGE TECH SCHOOL MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE LG OO ae ae eka oa OQ MAN will be remembered by our Class more than Mr. McCabe. YOUNG So 1940 Cut in Linoleum by Reginald A, Bewes 81 82 “THE BROWNIE” History of the 1940 Semior Class OUR FRESHMAN YEAR EVER will we forget the eventful day when we entered the portals of the Rindge Technical School, although we resented greatly to being branded as “Frosh,” and being considered “Infants” in the eyes of upper-classmen. Imagine, four hundred and fifty suntanned and eager-faced Freshmen crowd- ing the Auditorium of Rindge. Ready, willing, and able to do things that made Officially named the class of 40, we wandered about the strange corridors with a bewildered expression on our faces. this book possible. Through the helpfulness and guidance of our teachers, the Freshmen owe Jane O. Mosher, Mr. Wendall F. Fogg, Mr. Martin L. Manning, and Mr. John R. Curry. their success to Miss Tierney, Mr. James J. With the thoughts to their school-mates, that they had still three years before them at Rindge, which is without doubt the of final examinations at ease, the Freshmen said farewell with joyful thoughts of vacation in mind, for they knew best technical school in New England. During this year the Baseball Team went to the semi-final round in the State Tournament, OUR SOPHOMORE YEAR We made our way to Rindge for the second year of our high school career. These poor creatures whose pride had been sorely attacked in their first battle for recognition, marched now to the familiar rooms to find themselves ranked as Sophomores. For the benefit of the readers, a Sophomore is sort of an in between person—not the lowest in rank and yet not the highest. He asks no favors and receives none. The Sophomores for the first time in their school career were to put on the first showing of their great class. It was a Christmas Play in which Sophomores only were permitted. The entire school pitched in a few pennies to make this the success which it was. The play, “Dust of the Roads.” Following this came the Senior Drama under the direction of Mr. Edward A. Sullivan and Mr. William S. Lynch. The play, “The Locked Room.” Mr. William Lynch was the director. Many clubs were formed during the course of this year; among them the Camera Club, Golf Club, Checker Club, Chemistry Club, Music Club and Radio Club. The football team had a good year as they always have with the exception of the game they had mournfully lost to Somerville. 1940 RINDGE TECH SCHOOL During this year our hockey team won the Greater Boston Championship. They defeated the champions of Rhode Island and also Exeter and the Harvard I’reshmen. They were rewarded with a trip to New York and Washington. While in New York they defeated the champions of New York City. Track, basketball and golf, all gave good accounts of themselves. OUR JUNIOR YEAR Another year passed, and in came the new Juniors who would become upper- classmen, also naturally, the new Freshmen and Sophomores. Not long after the end of October the Juniors went to the Polls (in room 101) to elect their class officers, who would carry their events successfully through this year. The results were as follows: President, Peter K. Babalas; Vice-President, James Yates; Sec- retary, James Scalese; Treasurer, frank Walsh. Not long afterwards a Council was formed by the officers which proved a great success. They promoted a Sport-Hop, the first of its kind at Rindge. Only the Council believed it would be successful but it was. It increased the treasury to forty-five dollars. Next came another dance, this time called “The Junior Round-Up.” This time we emerged from the wreck by the skin of our teeth. (Meaning that we broke even. ) The Senior Class put on their drama, ‘“Journey’s End,” directed by Mr. Wil- liam S$. Lynch. This was one of the best ever produced. If you remember we had as Captain of the Football Team a Junior who with his fellows was a great player, Henry Baniewicz. Other notable Junior players were Harry Robart who was also a State Champion shot putter. Remember how his opponents prayed not to be tackled by him. We had “Little Jim Madden” as Captain of a champion Track Team in Class B. Also James Rice and James Scalese who were the Co-captains of the Golf Team. So fellows, you see, even as Juniors we upheld the grand name of Rindge. Our Junior Prom, which we held at the Cantabrigia Club, financially went in the “hole” but as a Social event it was perfect. Again another year has glided on. The main occupation of the Juniors was watching the Seniors, in order that they would be able to assume next year the bored look, so necessary to a Senior’s countenance. OUR SENIOR YEAR The “Bored is Me” expression which distinguishes the Seniors was lacking the few days back in the Rindge building. The excitement of plaguing friends with the stories of the summer vacation was the cause. Soon, however, all tales 83 “THE BROWNIE” having been tattled, there was no other alternative than adopting the aforemen- tioned appearance of ennui. However, “the progress of this class must not be halted,” was the expression used by the Junior Officers. The election held in early October brought these results: President, Peter K. Babalas; Vice-President, William Ahearn; Secretary, James V. Scalese; Treasurer, Esau Verge. The Junior Council was continued but this year as the Senior Council. We also promoted the organizing of the Home Room Representatives Every Home Room had one delegate and every floor had a leader. They were: Ray Nicotera, James Ramsey, Michael Pasqueriello, and D. Dege. Peter Babalas was Chairman, and James Scalese was Secretary. The Football Night went over perfectly. The Auditorium was crowded to the rafters. We emerged from this with a clear profit of two hundred and eighty- nine dollars ($$$$$$). Not long afterwards came the Senior Drama; directed by Mr. W. Fogg, assisted by Mr. E. Breed. The play was “The Milky Way,” a farce in three acts by Lynn Root and Harry Clork. The cast (main parts)— Fred Scalese, Frank Walsh, Carmi March, Frank Wigham, Anthony Citro, Paul Callum, Salvatore Lavoi, Gilbert Stead, William Ahearn. This was also followed by dancing as was done in previous years. Our Football Team as usual came out on top at the Rindge-Somerville game, Thanksgiving Day, 13-0. It also defeated Cambridge High and Latin School. Hockey had a tough but good year as we had a very young team. The Track Team held on to the Class B. Championship, with Harry Robart as Captain and shot put champion. The Baseball Team lost a great friend Mr. John Curry, who died in March. Rindge was represented at the Everett Student Council by Jim Scalese, Pete Babalas and Bill Ahearn. The Rindge Glee Club sang on station WAAB on March 16, 1940. The Senior Council was allowed to help as a check over the Safety Patrol in the Lunch Room, and also provided for a broadcast of music during the lunch periods. The Graduation Exercises took place on June 4th, in the Edward Quinn Audi- torium. The Senior Reception climaxed the affairs and the school life of the Senior Class on June 6th. 1940 - es Yy, THERE'S CALLUM NURSING HIS Mj PRIZE MusTAGHE WY p AG AIN WLLL Uy [EIS THAT Wf RU TKOWSKI HIDING EHIND 3 PAPERS? Here we are at the Seventy-fifth Anniversary of our dear Alma Mater. All the alumni are passing in review before our broadcasting unit. Here comes the Class of ’40, looking like a review of not only the ‘““Who’s Who,” but also of the W.P.A. I'll name a few of those I recognize as they pass by. The first is J. Adams, the electricity teacher here at Rindge. Next is Augustine, the school’s track coach. He promises to turn out a win- ning team this year. Ah! His Honor the Mayor, Peter K. Babalas. He’s aspiring towards the Governor’s office. Will you look at this next creature?!! Why it’s Francis Babish with a week’s growth and his hair awry. Oh! I see, he’s still working on his plan to unite the world. Ah me! He’s hopeless. Here come the Browne brothers. They are the popular political bosses of two of Cambridge’s wards. Here comes our old football captain, and present football coach, Henry Baniewicz ! 7 Tagging right along with him is the assistant coach, Frank Biaga. Here’s Louis Bruneau, the big toy manufacturer of Cambridge. His factory keeps running into debt because he gives away many of his toys to the poor children. Now if you'll first peel the women away from the next man, you will see none other than Paul Callum, the “Robert Taylor” of television. Here is another of our present teachers. Earle Camber is the one I mean, he is the automobile teacher. Hello! Robert Carr, the co-inventor of the new sleep ray, with which peace will be forced upon any warring nation. Next is “Gusty” Cavallaro, who is still arguing. He contends that only a lack of fuel will prevent him from flying to the moon. Well, possibly Newton was wrong. IF. Cormier and J. Curtin have just developed a new carburetor which will save twice as much fuel as the old type. Seems as though “Gusty” might get to the moon after all. “Fuller-brush” Donovan has just been appointed junior assistant water boy to that group of W.P.A. workers which are still working on the Latin Building. Kenneth Drottar, professor of Mathematics at M. I. T., has found a way to s quare a circle. Now don’t get the names of the next two mixed. They are John Ferriera, the famous artist, and “Gable Ears” Ferriera, the famous “Globe Trotter,’ who has driven women wild in every country of this world. 1940 1940 RINDGE TECH SCHOOL James Flu, Carr’s famous partner, is head of the scientific research laboratories at Washington, D.C. Frechette is back in school as a teacher. He says, “It’s my turn to muddle the boys’ mind with geometric solutions.” Gilbert has a machine shop in North Cambridge. He just received an order to supply our new shop building with all the necessary equipment. Habashian owns the drug store across the street. No boys cutting classes are allowed in the store. J. Hawkins, President of the First National Bank of Cambridge, has just lent the city $500,000 for our new building. Hawley has been appointed the new Secretary of Education. Hofstein is one of the best reporters on the World News Service. Leo Horgan is back in “pro” football as coach of the ‘‘Giants.” Here’s Scott Jordan. He is the man whose cartoons, that appear in all the large news-papers, make your sides ache with laughter. It is Kastanos’ eye that is found peeking through every suspicious looking key- hole. He has taken over the column of the lately retired Walter Winchell. Mike Krikorian has just been made foreman of the “grease monkey” squad at Squantum., A. Lange, captain of the “All Stars” has a play that he thinks will sweep O’Neil’s “Bruins” off the ice. Mandelbaum has just finished his book, “The Field Theory of Relativity.” You remember he took over Einstein’s task after that noble personage left this earth for his reward. His assistant, Aldo Maliobi, is with him. Aldo did most of the mathematical work, while Mandelbaum did the theorizing. Marsh has had his plans of our proposed building for extra curricular activities accepted by the city. Medoff has published his “Memoirs of a Rindge Man,” and has made presents of this remarkable book to his classmates. E. Metivier, head of the Athletic Committee of Massachusetts, has proposed to send our football team to California to ‘“‘beat the tar out of those sissies at the Hollywood High School.” “Muggsy” Mrugala, our District Attorney, has just sent P. Murray, public enemy number 131,313 up the proverbial river for cheating at chess. “General” O’Connor has finally been promoted ; he is top sergeant of the “regu- lars.” Harry Robart and Irving Rounds, those two dazzling guards, are the only boys left who are still in “pro” football. Rutkowski plans to become Business Manager of our city next year. You remember that you voted for the ‘“Council-Manager” type of city government last year. Francis Sartanowicz has become the “Wizard of Wall Street.” His careful investing of our money has enabled us to build two of our new buildings. The Scalese brothers are, as you undoubtedly know, both Representatives. One is in the State Legislature, and the other is in Congress. A report from Boston, states that they have found a piece of G. Stead. You 89 “THE. BROWNIE” — . remember that our famed “mad scientist” mixed the wrong chemicals once too often. . | “Gabby” Tarquinio has a barber shop around the corner, where all our teachers gather. : Harry Turner, our great military strategist, has just lost his job because there will be no more wars. Hts i FE. Verge, the city desk editor of the Boston Globe, is obtaining ideas for a write-up of Rindge. aa Frank Walsh, the Vice-President of the United States, has decided not to run for re-election. He’s doing so, not only because he belives two terms suffi- cient, but also because he wishes to run against Pete K. Babalas in the Guber- natorial race. The neighbors of the “White House” are beginning to complain, because President Jimmy Yates is still practicing his trumpet. Well, the get-to-gether is over now. It was nice seeing old friends, but now we must go back to our work and show this “punch-drunk” world that there still are some fighting men, and that these true soldiers come from Rindge. In this capacity it has kept alive and furnished the hallowed traditions and spirit of Rindge. Informing the students explicitly and authentically about individual and group activities is the popular policy of “The Register.” This may be nicely summed up in its appropriate slogan—‘If it happened at Rindge you will se it in ‘The Register’.” Hence, as can readily be observed, this journal has, through the years, developed into a chronological history of Rindge’s outstanding per- sonalities and events. To us, the Class of 1940, “The Register” has been a source of in- valuable information. Tor the use of its files in procuring data for this book, we wish to express our gratitude to the faculty advisors— Mr. Haugh and Mr. Gomes, and to the entire staff whose excellent accounts aided us immensely. The members of this class who distinguished themselves as capable journalists are as follows: Esau Verge, Editor-in-Chief; Edward Sartanowicz, Sports Editor; William Ahern, Dramatics Editor; Charles Duarte, Senior Editor; William Rutkowski, Columnist. We sincerely hope that those after us will fully realize the mean- ing of a good school paper, and will employ every measure possible to make it a success. ie 1940 r NK | mI Ml Nt Ve vee vtvent ener MN NN TAINN ene TVG TPIT OO Ae | lt OUNELEUIUTUA Wie Wety Tn | cas ky Ster pins Cut in Linol um by Casimer C. 93 94 “THE BROWNIE” 1940 Hohn BR. Curry Called from our midst, called to his reward, is a friend, a dear friend to each and every Senior. We all had him during our I’reshman year as our Oral English teacher. As we look back we can remember his kindly face, his ready wit and his unfailing desire to help each of us. He was taken from us when he was in the prime of life—he leaves an emptiness that Rindge will experience great difficulty in filling. Mr. Curry proved himself a splendid teacher and a success- ful coach. No words we can ever utter could adequately ex- press our deep love and admiration of this truly remarkable character. We, the Senior Class of 1940, will go forth into the world holding before us the ideals of true sportsmanship and fair play that Mr. John Curry so adequately typified. Mr. Curry, we will not fail you. 1940 RINDGE TECH SCHOOL Russell Chandler Biol CHANDLER ed mes to Rindge from the Webster Grammar School, where already he had won fame and ac- claim by his wonderful display of deter- mination and courage. At Rindge he im- mediately made many friends. Russell, like all other boys, cherished many hopes but his greatest was to become a high jumper. He became a candidate for the Track Team during his Freshman year and through both his own efforts and those of the coach he became one of the state’s best jumpers. Russell was interested in many things but he was most interested in Boy Scouts. He was an Eagle Scout, an Assistant Scout Master and had forty Merit Badges to his credit, something which very few boys ever accomplished. He entertained the plan of going to Massachusetts State College and making radio his profession. During his last year in school, he was Captain of the Track Team. This year with his football injury completely healed he was capable of reaching heights of six feet and over. In order to do that he had exerted himself, and he con- tracted pneumonia. A few days before his dreams would have come true the deep mysteries, life and its shadows, called him away from us and his hopes—but oh! long will he be remembered by those of us who knew him. Paul Shunamon We, the Class of 1940, dedicate these lines in the memory of Paul Shunamon. Paul was usually called “AI” by his friends. While “Al” was a student at Rindge he was well known for his work in the Boy Scouts. It can be seen “Al” was a lover of Camping. Photography was his hobby. ‘Al’ came to Rindge from the Longfellow Grammar School and studied the Electrical course. Therefore, it was with deep sorrow that we should hear of his death, by accidental drowning. 95 96 “THE BROWNIE” The Senior Couneil Pick yourself out—most of the Class appeared for this picture— just as they did for meetings ? ? ? ? ? HE SENIOR COUNCIL which was a carry-over of last year’s Junior Council has proven to be a great help to the class. All the activities of the class were executed by this council and not one failed to fare successfully, both from a social and financial aspect. So successful has been this council that it can well boast of the honor of being the most efficient governing body in the history of any Senior Class. The council was directly responsible for the record breaking at- tendance at the Football Night and the ushering that was done at this affair. The Senior Drama also proved a success, thanks to this group. Furthermore, it was also responsible for the revival of the school spirit for this year. There were larger outpourings at the athletic events than has been the case for a good many years. The officers of the council were as follows: Peter K. Babalas, Chair- man, and James V. Scalese, Secretary. Although every member worked to his utmost there were a few that deserve a hand of applause, namely: William Rutkowski, who was in charge of all advertising for the ‘activities, Angelo Karon and John McCarthy. This Council has proven itself so successful that it will be carried on by every Senior Class henceforth. 1940 rhe 1 See y | vases 3 7 Viva | WM p IL 4 aH : 4 7m : EL BAE IMG Zo INN se hy a] (ee SS My, ag | Ye ede “iid ua tu tagldan ‘oblyn C aH Cut in Linoleum by George “THE BROWNIE” Class Audit INCOME: Football INigbhtwiicis we nce ae eer ee ee 300.00 Sentor Dramat=ie eevee, as ae eee eee 154.00 Donated by SeniorsCouriet| Sic). seem: eee 1540.00 Doriated by Haculty: a0 reese ne reer 1000.00 Donated Dye Janitors is pants tise etiam ee ener 420.00 Seizing Manitor reasiiry paws eee ee te ee 580.00 Total Income 3994.00 EXPENSES: Vessonsn inglish tor stall 2 uene ene eee 218.00 Bribes, torélunch-counter | DOvs= «9 eee eee eee 184.00 ENOTaver” serene Sugtie anc a ce amen ape oun em 498.00 Garh eras Clint tes, 3 ts cerdos os apatite dee arc 350.00 Editor's Salary ter inget ik es ote ein oe an eee 1500.00 Lessons in Torgery ( for absence notes) .......... 100.00 Stair Experises Sianeli ae Ree ee eae pera 1400.00 Total Expenses 4250.00 Net Loss 256.00 Frank Walsh and Pete Babalas have agreed to split the loss. Immediately upon the formation of this Patrol the conditions in the Cafeteria underwent a remarkable transfcrmation. The confusion and aimless walking around by the pupils in the cafeteria disappeared and quietness prevailed. Not only was the Patrol entrusted with the lunch period duties but they also were called to duty by many outside interests to usher at their affairs. HE SENIOR CLASS considers its football team of 1939 successful for three reasons: In the first place, it won its two objective games from Somerville and Cambridge High and Latin schools; in the second place, our team had a ninth place standing i in the final Eastern Mass. State school-boy football rating in Class A, and thirdly because of its fine gentlemanly conduct and genuine Rindge Spirit. In spite of the fact that Rindge had one of the toughest schedu'es of any Mass. team, it came out with a fine record of four victories, three ties, and three losses in a schedule consisting of seven Class A teams and three Class B teams. The opening game with Waltham was jinxed, as it has been for several past seasons. Although Rindge had a wide margin of first downs, the game ended in a scoreless tie. In the only night game of the season, Rindge was again tied in a game with Haverhill 0 to 0, although Rindge played a better game in every respect. Gardner was easily set back by Rindge in a 12 to 0 victory. In the Worcester Commerce game, Rindge was at its best when scoring five touchdowns, our team won by the top score of 31 to 0. Lawrence, second place state champions, scored a 13 to 6 triumph over Rindge in a closely fought contest, in which Lawrence had only two more first downs than Rindge. SMITH CONGRATULATIONS to one of the better assistant coaches of Mr. Smith, an agressive fellow, turns out agres- sive backfield men which is shown by the success our “backs” have had in the past few years. To Mr. Smith, who is also a great leader and inspiration, we wish many years of happiness and success, not only in MR. WILFRED METIVIER WE, THE MEMBERS. of the Senior Class, congratulate Mr. Metivier for his fine work as coach of the football team dur- ing the recent years that we have been mem- bers of the school. This man, because of his understanding and patience is a great fellow with whom to work. We thank you, coach, for giving Rindge a great football team during the past years and hope you turn out many more. Here is wishing you many years of health and happiness and may the remainder of your years be spent at Rindge as teacher and football coach. “THE BROWNIE” The Hockey Team Front Row (left to right): J. Haflich (Manager), A. Lange, J. Ronzio, E. Metivier (Capt.) J. Casey, R. Poirier, R. O’Neil, H. Day (Assistant Manager). Back Row: Mr. Henry C. Lynch (Faculty Manager), R. Gagnon, R. Verrier, R. Hunt, FE. Benoit, G. Hall, E. Phaneuf, J. Mahler, Mr. William H. Mahoney (Coach). N HOCKEY THIS SEASON Rindge did not live up to expectations. On the whole the Team was light, fast, and had a good passing combi nation. As the season opened the lack of veterans showed greatly on an inexperienced Rindge Team. Due to the stiffness of opposition we were defeated in early games, but as the season progressed our passing attack became more accurate, and as a result we tied the Newton sextet who later on won the League Championship. The outstanding player of the season, without a doubt, was Captain Evariste Metivier. He was easily the best goalie on the ice, and due to his excellent playing he was chosen All-Scholastic Goalie for the season. The defense of James Ronzio and Robert Poirier played consistently all season, while O’Neil, Casey and Lange also played a fine brand of hockey. The coaching efforts of Mr. Mahoney were rewarded by the sportsmanship displayed by the Rindge Hockey Team throughout the season. Those receiving letters were: Evariste Metivier, Robert O’Neil, John Casey, Alfred Lange, Robert Poirier, James Ronzio, Edward Benoit, Robert Verrier, Romeo Gagnon, Eugene McPhelim, Edmund Phaneuf, John Mahler, Richard Hunt, George Hall, Harry Day and Jerome Haflich, C This list of letter men contains for the most part Freshmen and Sophomores, hence we can look forward in a year or so to another wonder-team like our un- defeated champions of two years ago. RINDGE TECH SCHOOL The Basketball Team Front Row: A. Allen, M. Buttaro, P. Smerlash, H. Baniewicz, A. Panis, F. Paglierani, M. Kardulas. Back Row: Mr. Henry Lynch (Faculty Manager), H. Ronchetti, F. Johnson, M. Petricone, G, Kesselhuth, T. Foster (Manager), Mr. Thomas J. Murphy (Coach). PA JUGH the Basketball Team did not get a bid to the Tech Tournament, it had a far from poor season. In fact, it won the City Championship from C. H. L. S. and finished second in the Suburban League. The second game with Somerville High, which was rated as the best team in the state, gives a fine example of the Team’s skillful playing. Playing with only seven men of an otherwise full strength team of eleven, the Brownies bowed to an undefeated quintet 37—25. Due to one of the biggest snow storms in history, there was no school the day of the game, and the boys believed the game to have been called off. At the end of the third period the Team was behind by only four points, but Somerville having their full team, had too much reserve power to be overtaken, Taking the year as a whole the Basketball Team represented our school as we would have it represented. Henry Baniewicz and Albert Allen played bang-up games at center, while Mike Petricone and Mario Buttaro held down the forwards, with Henry Ronchetti and Frank Johnson great on defense. These boys are all Seniors and will undoubtedly make names for themselves in years to come. (Continued on Page 110) 110 “THE BROWNIE” 1940 The Baseball ‘Team Back Row (left to right): C. Carrier, H. With Coach “Bill” MeLaughlin again at the helm the Team has defeated Brookline, Newton, and our old rivals, Cambridge Latin. The coach is assisted this year by two of last year’s dependables, Mitch Metivier and Tom Foster. Coach McLaughlin has seven veterans from last year’s Team who are perform- ing nobly. The Senior Class is represented by the following members: Co-captains Wagner and Conlon at second base and short stop respectively. Al Lange is hold- ing down the third sack, Henry Baniewicz is in center field, “Pat” O’Donell is in left field, Leo Horgan is in right field and Tom Walton is doing the pitching. The Team has the old Rindge spirit and we of the Senior Class wish for the Team and Coach McLaughlin lots of good luck and hope they bring another cham- pionship to our Alma Mater. MURPHY, the popular Rindge Mentor, is ranked high among the leading schoolboy coaches, of Greater Boston. Not only possessed of a great personality, but also with a character of true sportsmanship, and a great willingness to help others . Rindge for quite a few years has been represented on the basketball court by out- standing teams. Mr. Murphy has put Rindge teams in the Tech Tournament practically every year without exception. We, the Senior Class, hope that this out- standing personality may reign for years to come, as the guiding spirit of Rindge’s basketball destiny. NUERGAVV lav Pee CIEAUG HIGEIN McLAUGHLIN coach for MR. many years, until Mr. Curry was appointed 150: Curry, Mr. McLaughlin has become coach Was in With the passing away of Mr. again. We know from past records of his teams, that there is no finer or better coach than Mr. McLaughlin. He has the quality of a gentleman, and a_ helping true sportsman, hand, that will never be forgotten by the graduating class of 1940. As we go to press, his coming baseball team, hasn’t very bright prospects, but we know that the able coaching of Mr. Mc- Laughlin will place them high in the school- boy ranks. MRi -DHOMAS P.-DUPEY MR. DUFFY, with his knowledge, spirit and enthusiasm behind our boys, has made Rindge Track Teams among the best in the state. Two years in a row he has won the State Championship (Class B) and has some great prospects for spring track, as we go to press. To you, Mr. Duffy, we extend our best wishes to continue your marvelous work as the Rindge Track Coach. EEL “THE BROWNIE” Indoor Track Team Back Row (left to right): Mr. Henry C. Ramsey, F. Kennedy, J. Madden, H. Robart (Captain), F, Taylor, J. Russell, T. Nelson. UR TRACK TEAM has made itself known this year by winning all dual meets. The Team also won the State Championship of Class B, making this the second year, as they won the Championship in 1939. There’s going to be a mighty dent in the Team this year unless Mr. Duffy can get some good Freshmen out for the Team and break them in. Harry Robart, the Captain and holder of the record for the shot put, will be the biggest loss. Next comes Jimmy Madden, last year’s Captain and one of the best 1000-yarders in the state, who also graduates this year. Next on the graduating list comes James Ramsey, the littke man who gave the big fellows plenty of trouble in the dashes. And last we have Frank Baiga, our 600-yarder, who also gave his competitors plenty of trouble. One break Mr. Duffy is getting is that he still has Francis Kennedy, 300- yarder, who made himself known this year; Charlie West, a good 600-yarder ; and Lewis, a promising high jumper; but best of all, Aaron Smith in the broad jump and ready to fill Ramsey’s shoes in the dashes. The graduates wish Mr. Duffy a lot of luck for next year. RINDGE TECH SCHOOL MR. WILLIAM H. MAHONEY MR. MAHONEY became hockey coach MLS 7. To show how remarkable his ability as a coach is, his second year as hockey coach was to lead his charges into the New Eng- land Championship. He is the type of man who never gets tired working with boys. He has played with the best of them, and can take his bumps like a true sportsman. Many of the players he developed are representing local colleges in a truly remarkable manner. They show that they were well coached. To you, Mr. Mahoney, the Senior Class extends their hope that you will never leave Rindge. Addn alors xD Wien MRO HENRY CC. LYNCH THE CLASS OF 1940 will always re- member the kind and friendly spirit this man had toward each and every boy. His good humor and pleasing personality made the days in the classrooms seem very short. It is with deep regret that we have to lose such a fine gentleman as Mr. Lynch. He will go down in our memory as one of the finest men we ever came in contact with, during our four years at Rindge. “THE BROWNIE” ALMA MATER Rindge: thou glorious mother, Loyal sons thy praises sing To thee as to no other, Gratefully their homage bring To express our pleasure Now our voices rise; True in vict’ry’s hour, Faithful in defeat, Rindge, our Alma Mater Hail! Chase “THE BROWNIE” Home Room Kepresentatives | Res years many attempts were made to establish a Student Council here at At the beginning of this school term the Home Room kKepresentatives were organized. This coun- cil was composed of one delegate from every Home Room in the school. It was the duty of these delegates to report to the Auditorium every [riday morning and discuss topics that would benefit the general welfare of the school. Then on Monday mornings they reported the business that was brought up in the meetings to their own Home Rooms. Much was done by this council to stimulate school spirit and the results were shown by the large outpourings that we had at the football games both away and at home. Checker playing was also revived and the cafeteria conditions bettered by this body. The council also supported all school activities and helped increase the sales of The Register. The officers of the Home Room Representatives were as follows: Peter K. Babalas, Chairman; James V. Scalese, Secretary; and Mr. Wood and Mr. Mahoney were the advisory board. RINDGE TECH SCHOOL The Senior Drama 1940 HE SENIOR DRAMA, as you know, was the highlight of this year. It was quite successtul, financially and socially. The play, “The Milky Way,” was chosen by Mr. Wendell Fogg and Mr. Edgar Breed, our two dramatic coaches. The play ran for many weeks on Broad- way, and was also made into a motion picture. A short synopsis: On the first curtain the welter-weight champ of the world has been knocked out by a milk man. This does not lend much surprise to the audience until the milkman puts in his appearance. He is very short; the Mr. Milquetoast type. We then find that he is quite a timid soul and that Spider, the fighter’s trainer, is the one who really knocked out the “Champ.” “Gabby” Sloane, the quick tempered manager of the “Champ,” matches the milkman and his fighter for a title bout and the little milkman, in ducking and popping up again, knocks the “Champ” out. Every thing ends all right, for the “Champ” marries the milkman’s sister and they all go into the dairy business. Greenleaf 120 “THE BROWNIE” 1940 Football Night N NOVEMBER 10, 1939 our annual Football Night was held in the Audi- torium and Gymnasium. The success of any similar undertaking is usually proportionate to the number of persons in attendance. Suffice it to say that our enterprise was of such caliber that our Auditorium was inadequate to hold all who wished to attend. Those persons fortunate to get inside were treated to a show long to be remembered among the annals of “Football Night.” As a reminder of that memorable night let me refreshen your memory with the following high- lights. The crowds mobbed the doors as if in a power drive. It was the largest group ever assembled in our spacious Auditorium. The program was started by Mr. Freni and the School Band. The applause resembled that of the cheers given to our Football Team. The performers included the Round-Up Buckeroos, the Three A’s, Vincent (ese: After the close of the entertainment i n the Auditorium the audience went over to our Gym where they danced to the music of the Starduster’s Orchestra. A tabulation of the profit revealed the Senior Class was richer by two hundred and eighty-nine ate This served only to hearten the hard working committee. The committee included: Peter K. Babalas, William Ahearn, James Scalese, Esau Verge, J. E. McCarthy, Angelo Karon, William Malloy, Daniel Meenan, William Rutkowski, Walter and Warren Browne. THE FOOTBALL TEAM - - = Continued-from Page 106 As the Newton Game came along, Rindge was injury ridden and suffered another heart-breaking tie, after making the most first downs, and the final score was 6 to 6. In the Wakefield game, Rindge slumped and received the biggest upset of the year by a 14 to 0 loss. On Armistice Day, Rindge won a Badin battle and the city ch ampionship by gloriously defeating Cambridge Latin 21 to 0 and thereby gaining the city trophy, an honor emblematic of the superior Cambridge team. The light, fast Lynn English team conquered Rindge in another upset by a 12 to 7 margin in a hard fought game. In the last and most important season game Somerville, the traditional rival, was defeated by one of the best displays of Rindge power in the whole season by.a 13 to 0 score. Capt. Henry Baniewicz and Harry Robart who have played on the first team for four years were standouts as both were picked on all-scholastic teams. Other consistent players were Paul Dottin, an outstanding junior, and Evariste Metivier, as an excellent punter. The 1940 team will miss the services of these Seniors: James Bond, James Killackey, Harry Robart, Henry Baniewicz, Evariste vere Leo Horgan, Irving Rounds, [red Frechette, rank Johnson, I'rank Biaga, and manager Buddy Madden. Most of the Senior lettermen have been on the squad for four years and these seniors have shown their true school spirit by taking part in this sport. RINDGE TECH SCHOOL Junior Prom HE JUNIOR CLASS this year tried with success, holding their Prom out- side of the walls of Rindge. The dance was held at the Elk’s Lodge Room, Central Square, on Friday evening, May 10th. The music for the occasion was furnished by “The Star-Dusters,” an organization made up for the main part of Rindge graduates and undergraduates. Among the invited guests were His Honor Mayor John W. Lyons and Mrs. Lyons, Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Iitzgerald, all the members of the School Committee with their wives, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Wood, Mr. and Mrs. James F. Conlin, Mr. and Mrs. Francis T. McCabe, Miss Marion Pike, Miss Mary Cassidy, Miss Jane Mosher. The Prom Committee consisted of John Sugrue, Edward Aroyan, Donald Lorenzo, Arthur Lee, William Jones. CoRY Senior Prom AS USUAL the Senior Prom will be held at Walker Memorial. No more beautiful setting than this could be obtained for our final assembly. The deco- rations, the crystal ball, the spot-lights, all add up to a beautiful location for our farewell party. Assisting Mr. Mahoney in the running of this affair are the Junior Class Officers: Pres. John Sugrue, Vice-President Edward Aroyan, Secretary Donald Lorenzo, Treasurer Arthur Lee, and a corps of Junior Ushers who were still to be named as our book went to press. The date has been fixed—June 6th. The place—Walker Memorial. Come on June sixth! 122 “THE BROWNIE” The Golf Team at ee NDER THE SPLENDID COACHING of Mr., William Berkeley, this team did well at their home-course at Fresh Pond Golf Course. This team was captained through the golf season by Jim Scalese and Jim Rice, who incidentally reorganized golf at Rindge. Both boys are the back-bone of this young and new team. Some great shots were made on the fairways by the entire team. Jim Scalese made a hole-in-one at a distance of 185 yards. Boutilier and Stone, a Sophomore and Junior respectively, came through with occasional points when they were needed. Habeshian, known as the “The Ball Looser,” lost seventeen balls in nine holes of golf. Fleming had many a long drive ; he duced a par four hole, which was a grand piece of shooting. The coach, Mr. Berkeley, left-handed President of the Fresh Pond Golf Course, gave to the boys all his time in all ways possible. Mr. Dennehy did his bit helping with transportation and telling the boys not to use the pencil too often. Seated, left to right, are Co-Captain J. V. Scalese, Coach W. Berkeley and Co-Captain J, F. Rice. Standing in the rear are (J. tor.) J. J. Stone, Norman Boutilier, Edward Fleming and Haig Habeshian. RINDGE TECH SCHOOL Senior Girls’ Committee IV lies OF THE SUCCESS of the Senior Class has been due to the above girls, who gave their time willingly and unselfishly for our class. The large audiences at Football Night and the Senior Drama were partially due to their excellent salesmanship of our tickets in their respective High Schools. Consequently, it has been only natural that we have set aside this page of our Year Book in order to show our appreciation for what they have accomplished. The Senior Class will always remember their devoted and untiring efforts in our behalf. The’ girls’ names--are -as follows: . Julia Karon,.CoH.-L. S.; Bessie! ssiakes, (Ger L.S.
