FOREIG LA GUAGES mutual unclerstanclmg Mm '3l'TiA'2fC5ZTil 0 the world s people Department Head With the growing emphasis today on a world unified in peace there is an increasing need for an understanding of our fellow men Our Language Department strives to have students recognize the differences in our ways of living in addition to learning to read and converse in a foreign tongue By acquir ing this additional knowledge of others cultures we may better understand their feelings and problems The study of a foreign language also aids us nn understand ing our own English as we know it is derived from many different languages Most of our scientific terms come from Latin and Greek the literary words from French and the great malor ity or our everyday words are of Germanic origin Spanish too has an influence although not so much in the language as in customs and culture Pupils at Ridley Township are fortunate to have the opportunity to study Latin French German and Spanish LA To the satisfaction of Mrs D Davis J Madison successfully completes Difficult passages in advanced German are simplified by the expert the canlugation of the Irregular verb declr in Spanish ll c ss explanations of Miss M Komancwska

ff S Slogoff and R Ruttenhouse are deeply engrossed in reference material as N Hatton seeks information on the life and works of Pearl 5 Buck LIBRARY cud m Search for knowledge Book reports research papers essays de bates whenever a student needs help any of these or numerous other subgects he turns untalterlngly toward the library Here in the quiet atmosphere of study he may ponder over the numerous tasks that con front the pupil of today With the help ofthe librarian he may find books magazines new papers anJ pamphlets to be used either for reference or purely for enloyment Books with the exception of reference volumes may be checked out for a two week period All magazines pamphlets and newspapers may with special permission be removed from the library for a specified time Our library facilities have grown annually by the acquisition of new fiction and non fiction volumes purchased with the need of the student in mind At the present time there are approximately 6500 volumes on fle the card catalog A sistance in maintaining the smooth func tioning of the lbrary is given by students who during their free periods sort and re shelf books file cards and help anyone n need of it The library open every period of the day and for a short time after school offers stu dents the opportunity of using the facilities to gain a broader and richer education MISS VIGINIA COLEMAN B SLS Drexel Institute Librarian Quiet prevails as students spend leisure hours in the library during a Library assistant, S, Fullerton, stamps pass typical day. for E, Boeck as J.
