These benefits are pre- sented to many by the social studies department through courses in civics, American history, world history, problems of democracy, and a newly added course of sociology. The purpose of these studies is to reveal to us the problems and events of the world's past. It is through the study of by- gone days that we are guided to an understanding of our present and brighter future. So it is today that social studies is one of the m o r e important. and lately more emphasized courses at Ridley Township High School. S-.. t Nr i,,,nmw Where's the jokes?,' Peek-a-boo, I see you. Education of the body is just as important that of the mind. For this reason health and physical education are required courses. In health classes the students are guided along the paths of proper care of our wonderful machinefthe body. How to avoid accidents and repair them is also a large part of this course as are the functions and diseases of the anatomy. In gym classes students are given valuable lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship. Not only seasonal sports but also gymnastics and calisthenics are included in the curricular. During this school year many new sports have been introduced such as archery and lacrosse. Thus our students learn what is physical fitness and how to keep it that way. . . . so after I heard the bang, I lool-:eclg uml llzere was my hand . . . 68 in the door. ls tlzis a school or a zo0?', lt must have been a terrible accideruf' 0 69 6, 9'-4 ..Q - S x r Y 2 My isfzfl- ivy CAFETERIA MANAGEMENT Wie ure wlmt wo 1-ullu Nulrilious, wvll-huluncecl meals are consistently svrvwl in Ricllf-y Townshipl cafeteria. THE GREEN RAIDER Tremendous improvements were made in the school paper, the GREEN liilljlili, during: the past school year. For the first time students were forced to compete for posi- tions on the staff. editors were chosen to head each depart- ment, and a constitution was drawn up by the editors with the assistance of Hr. Gappodanno. sponsor. After studying journalistic techniques, the GREEN RAIDER staff endeavored to abide by them in the presenta- tion of their paper. For the first time the GREEN RAIDER appeared at regular intervals and each month the staff hon- ored an outstanding teacher and senior with a front page account of their accomplishments. The special Christmas, April Fool, and graduation issues will be long remembered by those who read them. The members of the staff, how- ever, will remember every issue along with the fun and hard work that contributed to their publications. Bottom row: P. Capadonna, J. Petz, C. Sorrentino, B. Marler, S. BAND Happy Birthday to youf' liidley Township lligh School Band, for 1955-36 marked ten years of musical achievement for your organization. A very fruitful ten years they were, too, for in 1943 the hand had noth- ing hut a new director, a few old and almost useless instru- ments, and a great deal of spirit. The first appearance of the green a11d white uniformed band was at the National llonor Society Assembly in 19-io. Since that time, however, the band has performed in many areas and has con s t a n t l y come through with flying colors. Prizes won were too numerous to he listed but the crowning achievement of the years was the state championship won by the band in 19-1-8. For ten years our school band has excelled and this one was no exception: for this year's performances and concerts were considered to be among the best. Once again the band was well represented in Forensic contests and in district and state band and orchestra. All this would not have been possible, however, without the interest and co-operation of parents, teachers, and communi- ty. To all those who helped the Ridley Township band on its road to success, its members and the students of the school offer humble and grateful thanks. 5 - Bottom row: J. Morris, S. Van Zant, M. ' CHORUS The lights were dimmed: an expectant hush fell over the au- dience, the director raised his baton: another choral concert began. The students of Ridley Township are accustomed to hearing their chorus present concerts consisting of the best in vocal music and this year was no exception. The Christmas candlelight service, presented in December, consisted of varied religious numbers, each with a colorful, tableau depicting a portion of the age old biblical story. X0 sooner was this performance completed than the chorus members began to practice Easter musio and light popular numbers which they presented in the annual spring concert. Concerts were not the only activities listed on the chorus agenda, however. Individual members p a rtic i p ated in churches located in this area. Those who were interested in additional choral activity were given the opportunity to per- form with the A Cappella Choir or the Girls' Ensemble and to do solo, duet, or quartet work. Most significant is the fact that each year the chorus works diligently to uphold the stand- ards tliat have been set in pre- vious years. Each year they suc- ceed. 82 lano, N. Helinku, E. Moore. l.. But earlv in April of this year, on the basis of a report given by Ralph B. Sharer, principal, and after discussion bv the group, it was voted upon bv the members present to dis- continue this organiaztion in favor of a more effective plan used in other senior high schools. The three main principles behind an organi- zation of this tvpe are to render guidance and financial aid to the students and worthv or- ganiaztions of the school, and to keep the parents informed on what is being accomplished bv its students. These three things are done P lreusury Io flute. .T.S.CD. effectively bv l'.'l'.A.'s in the grade and junior high schools, but upon studying records, it is found that no senior high school of our size in this area has an effective organization of the P.T.A. nature. It was pointed out that guidance is rendered capablv by the school guidance department, that financial funds are gained by organizations through their own campaigns, and that a more effective wav to inform the parents of student progress is through private interviews upon re- quest, and individual class parents' clubs. Certain functions that the ll.'l'.5.0. has spon- sored will remain in existence, however, and will serve as a remainder to students and citi- zens alike of the fine and commendable job the P.T.S.O. has done in the past. It is the long- awaited induction service of the National Honor Society. Election to this society is the greatest hon- or which can be bestowed during the high school years. It is required that its members exemplify the major characteristics of a model student-namely character, scholar- ship, leadership, and service. What more could be expected of an individual than ex- cellence in these four characteristics. This year the juniors did an outstand- ing job when they presented the delightful old comedy Patsy Strings Along. The play. which was a pleasant combination of laugh- ter and suspense. centered around Lakeland Academy and dealt with the efforts of Patsy Heath. a former vaudeville actress, to sax c ilu- academy from certain disaster. After having endured several very trying and often amusing trials Miss Heath succeeded and turned Lakeland Academy into a lively and spirited college. It is impossible to realize the amount of time and effort that must he given and put forth in order to produce a plav such as Patsy Strings Along. The cast, the mem- bers of the various committees, and Hrs. Martha Burke, who did a splendid job of directing the play, worked to- 1 , Trl'- MRS. The LY. and 9th gracle teams hail an equally successful season by showing true Township spirit. lluring the 53-56 season the girls clis- playecl the fine teamwork necessary for a well-balancexl team. Leaving only two var- sity players for next year's squad the junior varsity promises an excellent varsity team next season. 01 .60 Bottom row: H. MeCafferty. I.. Delaney. P. Novatka. N. Cmnt. lf. Under the supervision. of Coach Bob Adams, the boys showed a lot of hustle in pre-season warm-ups. The team will face many top-notch clubs in the area and with good pitching and steady hitting the team should do very well. Captained by all- around athlete Paul Terhes and aided by Sam Minutola, Jack Campbell, Frank Campo, Ron- nie Simpson, Lou Divan, and other prospects, the team is expected to finish well among the first division. Everyone is looking ahead to a successful season for the Green Raider nine. With this winning run, the girls' softball team ended another season which displayed the characteristic good sportsmanship of Township to win graciously and to lose gracefullyf, QQ. .,. X inn...- Enthusiastic to begin another season, scores of girls, including the five remaining players, oiled their gloves and limbered up their arms. Then they followed a rigorous schedule of prac- :V tices scrimmages, and seven league games. Coached by Blanche Prendergast and Cath- erine Eni, the girls cooperated to bring about another record of which our school can be justly proud. Because only three girls will be lost through graduation, next year's team will open their Q lockers with wonderful prospects in store for their bats, balls, and sandbags. x l tl 9 1 Q4 'ami .nw V J f 541- You slid too soon Put wou uould haze been out HROUVWI Und Round She S0955 and 'fhefe 5 9 27-Lansdowne ...... ...... 3-Chester ...... 7-Sharon Hill 10-Lansdowne ...... ...... 14-J.
