We can recall places where the road was rough and rocky, where we could never have passed safely, if it had not been for the capable guidance of our parents and teachers To them we say a very sincere Thank you Then too there were places along our road that were smooth and easily traveled On these the high points of our hrgh school careers we have enjoyed together the many privileges which being a part of the growing system of Ridley Township schools has given us. We realize that we have now reached the first of many great crossroads which we will encounter during our lives. From this point on, our paths will separate, and each of us will travel an individual way through life. Our schooling however has lard the foundation for making our road after graduation one whrch leads to success In this book we have trred to show scenes from the last year of our Road to Graduation Come walk with us rn memory Deofroatron Intermrngled with the joys of high school life are the sorrows that come from the loss of familiar friends The students of Ridley Township High joined the townspeople rn mourning the death of Dr Harry Callager during the past year Dr Callager served as medical examiner for our schools for thirty five years He worked zealously durrn this period of time admrnrsterlng to the physical needs of our township It IS because of his unselfrsh devotion and efforts on our behalf that we of the 1955 ARCHIVE staff dedicate our yearbook to our doctor and friend Dr Harry Gallager 2 7 7 sc 79 ' ' - s 3 ' 9 -4 , U U . . . BUCHANAN, Vice President ALBERT FULLERTON RICHARD M. REINHART JAMES J. SELLERS BERTHA C. COVERDALE, Secretary CHARLES R. PERRY, Treasurer School Board Our Roaclis Con tractors Careful planning usually precedes the construction of anything that is worth- while. This is particularly true in the constructing of a road-whether it is to be one of mortar and concrete or the mythical road of life. The school board of Ridley Township has, been instrumental in making decisions and giving advice to form a firm foundation for future enterprises. This, of course, is the very basis of our education. We, the class of 555, wish to express our appreciation to these contractors for their careful planning, their patient mending, and their unfailing assistance. 8 Administration Our Rond's Foundation Every road requires a firm foundation, for upon this the future success of the road depends. Our road. the road to graduation, is not different from any other road. for it too has necessitated a substantial foundation. This has been our compe- tent administration. Yes, our administration has certainly started the paving of our road to the fullest extent of their ability. From them, from their staunch foundation, the completion of the road has emerged. Another factor in the completion of the road has been our earnest school board. To these individuals, we wish to express our deepest gratitude for all of the time and interest which they so eagerly put forth on our behalf. To the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Robert Donato, and his assistant, Mr. O,Brien, and their co-workers, Mr. Ralph Sharer and Mr. Norman Ferguson. we, the senior class of '655,7' wish to extend a very sincere thank you.', We feel certain that you, the foundation of our road, will serve as the foundation of many roads to come for the future graduates and citizens of our community. vt fb-49 ROBERT V. Wood Shop - Our Road's Engineers Sometime, somewhere, every road must come to an end. As seniors, not wanting to find ourselves lost and bewildered at the end of a road, we rely on signposts to direct us toward our destination, graduation. The signposts unquestionably are our faculty. These competent men and women work har- moniously together striving to the best of their abilities to graduate from our high school, strong personalities who will be definite contributions to our communities and assets to our nation. With this goal in mind and our interests at heart, they earnestly work to mold our characters, to develop our talents, and to prepare us for the problems of the future. Learning how to cooperate and to work well with others is one of the most important elements in the development of those who are to enjoy successful careers. The Physical Education De- partment is greatly responsible for this achievement. Since physical education and health are made compulsory for students by the state, everyone must pass these subjects in order to be graduated. Having a fine music department at Ridley Township affords students the opportunities of instruction in the fund- amentals of music and active participation in a musical organization. Thus, after graduation, each music student is given a choice of paths-music, a career, or music, a hobby. At Ridley Township we recognize two main musical organizations, the band directed by Miss Marie Sidorsky, and our chorus under the leader- ship of Charles Schisler. Vocational Living in the industrial area as we do, it is only fitting that a course be offered to prepare the stu- dent who wishes to enter this field. Therefore Ridley Township provides an excellent vocational department which is composed of the Auto, Wood, and Machine Shops. 9 The auto shop ably trains students in the opera- tion, service, and repair of automobiles. Working with the best available equipment, the boys leave the auto shop ready to enter the automotive field with near professional abilities. The boys are under the supervision of William Gorman. Education In the vocational wood shop, the boys are taught the fundamentals of cabinet making in particular and other forms of woodworking in general. The beautiful cabinet and the rough frame work of stage scenery are all in the realm of the wood- working student. Many of Ridley's graduates have entered into various woodworking industries such as pattern making. carpentry, cabinet making, and mill work. Robert Aiken works with the boys here. The machine shop contains all the modern equip- ment needed for a complete well-rounded education which is essential in our advancing industrial age. The students in this shop work with Marion Cuppy in learning their machine shop skill. -l Mr. Aiken assists S. Blinutola on turn ing job. S Nllnutola turns down table leg on J. If you happened to walk by Room 112 this year during fourth or seventh period. I am sure you heard some noisy. urgent pleas of pro and con. These pleas were based on a great deal of reading to obtain evidence. quotes. and to learn the knack of misquoting opponents. This year. as last. we started off with a new coachg and this year. as last. our new coach, Bliss ,lean Buon- anno, was very patient and understand- ing and encouraged debating for plea- sure as well as knowledge. Miss Buonanno did remarkably well with only four letter winners returning. The team participated in both intramural debates and intermural debates. including the Penn Tournament and Temple Speech Festival. Schools that we debated in league competition were Nether Providence. P.NI.C.. Media. and Marple Newtown. We also debated St. Joseph's High School. Although the Green Raiders' five win and five loss record was not tops in the county, it was a marked improvement over last year's showing. Of the five reversals all were at the hands of top-ranking suburban school-boy elevens. Ridley Township is blessed with one of the finest coaching staffs in the area. The staff was headed by Phil Marion, capably assisted by Hugh Wynne, end coach, Bob Adams, line coach, and Tony Caia, the backfield coach. The team caused much optimism among the coaching staff with their fine display of team spirit and cooperation. It was this spirit and determination that helped the team rebound from a mediocre start to four straight wins going down the home stretch. The team was denied an even better record by the continual occurrence of injuries. The most jarring injury was suffered by Captain Jimmy Dunn, who broke his wrist in the Potts- town game. Bob Chesnut was seriously injured while making a tackle in the Chester game. Bill Parramore and Bob Marler also were lost to the team for the season. Filling the gaps left by these injuries were many outstanding first year men who showed terrific progress as the season wore on. These rookies were of invaluable service to the team toward the end of the season, however, as always, the mainstays of the team were last yearis returning veterans. With a tremendous line and a hard running backfield, the team was able to pile up 245 points to 38 points scored by their opponents. A power-packed Ardmore squad, to whom Township dropped their only loss, scored exactly one-half these points while the green and white eleven held all other schools to not more than a touchdown by any one team.
