Only toward the end of the year are the speed tests introduced. The second year's work stresses speed with accuracy, and each student has a budget to complete. During the third year the typing course is expanded into general secretarial training. It deals with filing, transcription, speed tests, work with the dictaphone, tabulation, setting up letters, and filling out forms varying in range from telegrams to income tax returns. The work in hookkeeping is continued through two years. Students receive hasic training in handling journals. ledgers, and financial statements in the first year. ln the second year the students hecome ac' quainted with machines used in husiness ofliccs adding machines, calculators. bookkeeping machines. comptometers, and ditto duphcators and mimco' graphs. Commercial students are also taught the elef ments of husiness law. The Commercial Department also offers a course in personal use typing for general and academic stu' dents to enahle them to acquire enough skill to do their own typing work. Ill lt is the purpose of the Commercial Department to give students the training necessary to enahle them to secure positions in the husiness world. By taking ei -ininercial courses through three years students may hecome stenographers. typists, tiling clerks. or book' keepers, Many graduates from Townshipis commer- cial course hold responsible positions in the husinesses and industries of Philadelphia and Delaware County. COMMERCIAL TRAINING Elf, M R. As early as the ninth grade students may elect Junior Business Training, an exploratory course in commercial work. In this course students may dis' cover that they have an interest in and an aptitude for business training. The suhject matter of the course includes the handling of personal hank accounts and check writing, money orders, the use of the mail service. transportation, personal budgets and costs- information needed hy people in all walks of life whether they are in the husiness field or not. Most commercial students take work in shorthand for three years. During the first year students learn the theory of shorthand. and hy constant practice they acquire the ahility to write this fascinating language. ln the second and third years the students are given dictation for transcription, and as the ahility of the student to take dictation increases, the speed of dictation is gradually increased.
