The two most advanced courxs in science are chemistry and physics, which may he elected hy students in the Ll n cl of fd e n l.U0l .50 -iuninr or senior year. M11st students who take the advanced work in science select chemistry for the junior year and physics in the last year J. Clymer exhibits Hgures he made for solid geometry. Mr. Smith explains the principle of the parallelogram on a Dietzgen drafting board. T. Beck shows Algebra II class how to find solution to an intri- cate problem.

Robb helps Mr. Thompson get supplies from science stock room. lvlathematics and science play important parts in the education of Ridley Township students, for they learn that science and math are not merely school suhjects whose rules and laws they have to memorize, hut a real and vital part of their lives and of the world that moves around them. All students have general work in mathematics in the seventh and eighth grades. Beginning with the ninth grade, thox students who have ahility in mathematics and thox who plan to enter college fol- low a course in mathematics that includes two years of algehra. plane and solid geometry, and trigonomf etry. Students not preparing for college may take general mathematics in the ninth grade and a course in mathematics for the consumer in the tenth grade. XV.1rk in mathematics is tied up as closely as possible with the real life experiences of students. so that it

Ill lt is the purpose of the Commercial Department to give students the training necessary to enahle them to secure positions in the husiness world. By taking ei -ininercial courses through three years students may hecome stenographers. typists, tiling clerks. or book' keepers, Many graduates from Townshipis commer- cial course hold responsible positions in the husinesses and industries of Philadelphia and Delaware County. COMMERCIAL TRAINING Elf, M R. As early as the ninth grade students may elect Junior Business Training, an exploratory course in commercial work. In this course students may dis' cover that they have an interest in and an aptitude for business training. The suhject matter of the course includes the handling of personal hank accounts and check writing, money orders, the use of the mail service. transportation, personal budgets and costs- information needed hy people in all walks of life whether they are in the husiness field or not. Most commercial students take work in shorthand for three years. During the first year students learn the theory of shorthand. and hy constant practice they acquire the ahility to write this fascinating language. ln the second and third years the students are given dictation for transcription, and as the ahility of the student to take dictation increases, the speed of dictation is gradually increased. The first yearis work in typing stresses the acquirf ing of skill in the use ot the machine. an understand- Upper Left: Bookkeeping II class learns to operate office machines while working on bookkeeping practice set.
