Morgart, Superintendent of Schools, Ridley Township High School has made steady progress since it was first established in 1934. The school plant has been constantly expanded and improved, and each year the latest and best equipment has been added to the school to keep it in step with the better trends in education. Under the Superintendent's program the administrative organization of the high school has been expanded to give Township boys and girls Mr. Sharm-r the benefit of improved guidance and planning in their school lives. As a result, the school experiences of Township boys and girls have become broader and richer, not only in classroom activities, but also in such functional activities as clubs and social or' ganizations. Through continuous work in the social .studies Ridley Township students become conscious of the parts they play in local, state. national and vvorld affairs, and they come to realize their responsibilities as citizens of each of these groups. One of the objecf tives of work in the social studies is to train the student for effective citizenship: another is to develop in him the abilities which are needed for the im' partial and effective investigation of social material and for the rendering of constructive judgments and decisions about social affairsg a third objective is to encourage the student to accumulate knowledge of the past in the light of which he may be better able R. Harvey, C. Kitchen, and W. Fitzgerald prepare farm products maps from a large illustration. to explain the present: the fourth objective is to develop cultural interests in the student. ln the junior High School the students follow courses in Geography, History. and Civics: and in Senior High School they continue work in social studies by taking American History, Wi,wrld History, and Problems of Democracy. An experimental class in Family Relationships has also been included in the program this year. The senior classes in Problems of Democracy are very interesting, for each student develops a research paper of his own. Thex groups enter essay contests, debates. forums, and dramatizations of significant movementsg they go on frequent educational trips and they plan certain assembly programs. This year the P. O. During the third year the typing course is expanded into general secretarial training. It deals with filing, transcription, speed tests, work with the dictaphone, tabulation, setting up letters, and filling out forms varying in range from telegrams to income tax returns. The work in hookkeeping is continued through two years. Students receive hasic training in handling journals. ledgers, and financial statements in the first year. ln the second year the students hecome ac' quainted with machines used in husiness ofliccs adding machines, calculators. bookkeeping machines. comptometers, and ditto duphcators and mimco' graphs. Commercial students are also taught the elef ments of husiness law. The Commercial Department also offers a course in personal use typing for general and academic stu' dents to enahle them to acquire enough skill to do their own typing work. Although all of the years of school at Township are husy ones, the final year brings more work and more responsibility for the students than any of the others. However, the rewards and pleasures of the senior year are greater, too, for in the realization that it is the last year of working together as a group the students exhihit the finest spirit of helpfulness and sacriice for the good of each other, for the benefit of the class, and for the honor of the school. In the Student Council, on the athletic teams, in all clubs and organizations the seniors are expected to furnish leadership and guidance, and being a senior means the assuming of responsibility. The social activities and the moneyfmaking activf ities of the class were planned with the guidance of the sponsors, Mr. Ferguson, Miss Clasen, Mr. Di' 'Giuliogand Miss Wasser. If the spirit of hard work and cooperation carries over from the junior into the senior year, the Class of '50 should equal the best that has gone before in Ridley Township. juniors played an important part in the success of all school activities, and their work on the staff of the school paper and on the staff of the school yearbook, to which underclassmen were admitted for the first time this year, deserves special mention. In scholastic achievement the Class of 'SO led all other groups in the school: for every marking period the Juniors had the greatest number of students on the Township Honor Roll. The members of the class, both boys and girls, have contributed to Townships excellent repuf tation for good athletics and fine sportsmanship. The most important activity of the ycar was the Junior Play, Don't Take My Penny, presented on March 11. The seventeen members of the cast had worked conscientiously under the direction of Mrs. Moore, and the presentation was an outstanding sucf cess. More than half the Junior Class helped with this play, either directly as members of the cast or staging group, or indirectly as members of various committees. The sponsors of the Junior Class are Mrs. Foster, Miss Snively, Mrs. Schaffer and Mr. Leonardo. Under their guidance the class has conducted a cam- paign of selling stationery to raise money for the expenses that will be met during the senior year. In January the class sponsored a night at the Canteen and received proceeds from the activity. On April 22 the annual juniorfSenior Prom gave the classes the opportunity to join together in their last common social affair. Finally, the officers and sponsors helped the seniors in their preparations for commencement. Row One: G. Reid, B. Niedwiecki, M. MacDonald, M. L. Mattus, M. Morrison, C. Liddy, J. Sports writers, coaches, and football authorities in this area were agreed that the Green Raiders were one of the most powerful teams in the history of suburban football. Year after year Ridley Township has been represented by good, hardffighting football teams, and it has become almost traditional that the Green Raiders would be strong contenders for the Delaware county championship. In the past, Township has won championships and has produced star linemen and backfield men who were selected for all' county or allfsuburban honors. But somehow, in the 1948 team there seemed to be brought together a great number of capable and brilliant players who filled all positions so well that Township football fans could SUBURBAN CHAMPION not have sought improvement in the handling of any position or in the teamwork and play of the whole squad. Eleven straight victories without a defeat or tie gave the Green Raiders the suburban conference title and the Delaware County American Legion Championship. The team scored more points than any team ever scored in the county's history. Yommy Costello, Mike Zayatz, Wes Huffines, and Harry Kurlish were selected on the all' county teamg suburban coaches picked Costello as back of the year and Hufhnes as lineman of the year g Huflines was selected end on the allfstate team. It is a high tribute to the coaching of the team and to the sportsmanship and character of the boys that the play of this team, more than that of any other in the suburban district, was marked by freedom from penalties. The 1948 Green Raiders were more than a winning football squad. Their fine sportsmanship, their wonderful team play, and their splendid spirit have made them an inspiration to their school and their com' iunity. JUNICDR HIGH SPORTS In the excitement of the football and basketball seasons our attention is focused on the varsity teams. But behind the success of the Township varsity foot' ball and basketball teams lie the hard work, train' ing, and experience the players have gotten in their competition on the junior high school level. Without the training in fundamentals that our boys receive in junior high, they could not have achieved such good records in high school competition. The Little Green Raiders concluded one of the most successful seasons in recent years in football, winning six games and losing one-the opening con- test. The team improved with every game it playedg at the end of the season it was considered one of the best junior high teams in Delaware County. In basketball Mr. DiGiulio's boys Hnished the season with a record of fourteen wins and five losses. This years squad had a number of seventh and eighth grade players on it, so that the outlook for next year, and for the following years for the varsity, is very good. Row One: Fizzano, E. Peters, S. ARTS and CRAFTS The Arts and Crafts Cluh was estahlished this year to give interested students the opportunity to design and work out small ohiects of art on their own initiative. Although each memher is allowed to follow his own inclinations in the pro' jects he undertakes, it is expected that each one will produce ohjects of some use or value to the person making them. With the addition of a new electric oven and other equipment in the art department next year, the cluh will he ahlc to expand its activities into the field of ceramics to produce small ceramic art ohlects and iewelry. Sitting: D. Holtz, H. Anslcis. Standing: M. Grace, F. Selfridge, M. Stanley. HOME ECONCDMICS The Home Economics Cluh set up as its primary ohjective this year the teaching of girls to do work with their hands. Under the direction of Mrs. Culver, their sponsor, the girls have knitted socks and scarves, crocheted luncheonette sets, scarves, and doilies, and have emhroidered towels and table runners. Some of the girls have used the cluh periods to make dresses for themselves. Some of the girls have used small looms to make hotfplate mats, and others have worked out interesting designs for pot holders. The girls have sold many of the mats and pot holders to help the eluh treasury. Since the club is composed of senior girls, the articles made hy them show the skill which the girls have acquired in their training, and many of the projects will he shown in the spring exhihit. As a ref sult, no great sales campaigns or circulation drives are needed, for the students look forward eagerly to the distrihution of our puhlications. The Green Raider is a mimeographed puhlication which contains news of school happenings of inter' est to students from the wventh to the twelfth grades. Although each editor contrihutes his share of the material that goes into the yearhook, it is his main task to organize the work of the students on his staff and help them prepare their contrihutions to this hook which is the record of the school year at Ridley Township. DEMOCRACY'S IDEALS The Ridley Township Student Council represents the entire student hody and functions for the purpose of improving the school, developing responsibility in students, and providing a student government to share in the administration of the school. Officers for the council are elected in March so that they will have ample time to plan the program of student government for the following year. The council is made up of representatives from all homef rooms of the school, and it meets every Friday, Every other year this group puhlishes the Township Hand' hook. The dehaters have done well since they were organized last year hy their coach, Mr, Ferguson. ln the spring of 1943 they achieved a goal that many more experienced dehators coveted. By winning the championship of southeastern Pennsylvania in the district eliminations, they became eligible to represent this area of Pennsylvania in the state finals at Oil City, where they placed fourth. From the time the selection committee starts to work until the final curtain falls there is a continuous period of planning and arranging: when the play is selected, there are tryouts to choose the cast: there must be a publicity committee, a ticket and sales committee, and a program committeeg the stage and property committees must work with the stage crew to secure the right setting: on the night of the play there must be an usher and a cloakfroom committee, And there are the daily practices and rehearsals up to the time of the dress rehearsal. Then comes the night of the play and the general confusion back' stage-lastfminute arrangements by the stage men, Hnal eheckfup on costumes, final touches by the make' up artist, lastfminute instructions from the directors.
