Volume XXVII The 1962 Retrospect CO-EDITORS Jeanie Fassler Sally Jean Campbell BUSINESS MANAGERS Norman Ferguson 1 Bruce Hoffsommer FOREWORD Although the primary purpose of a yearbook is to compile the memories of an entire school year, that is not its only function. It may seem that this is a book wih sentimental value for seniors only; however, it is meant for the school en masse. The annual, therefore, acts as a binding factor among the many constituents of Ridley Park High School. With this proud thought in mind, we, the yearbook staff, present to you, our subscribers, the 1962 RETROSPECT. With introspection as the theme of our publication, this year s staff wishes to convey its earnest appreciation to those who have helped bring the events of the school year into focus. We sincerely hope that you enjoy reading this book as much as we enjoyed producing it. 2 fable of Contents Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Athletics Activities Advertising DEDICATION Mr. J. Layton Moore has served the Ridley Park School System and the community for thirty-five years. During this time he has retained the high standards of the school and has been an able administrator, striving to insure the harmony between teachers and students. The sincerest best wishes, gratitude, and deep appreciation of the Class of 1962 go with Mr. Moore upon his retirement. In honor of his worthy accomplishments, the Senior Class dedicates its RETROSPECT to this capable, tireless, and respected individual. _ FACULTY Directing Operations . . . .it Supervising Principal J. LAYTON MOORE The members of the Class of 1962 and I have had many interests in common these past four years. Now as you prepare for your graduation, we find ourselves once again with an identical interest. You are graduating this year; I am retiring. It took you only four years to get through. For me it required thirty-five. I imagine that your reaction about leaving the Ridley Park High School is much the same as mine. It is one of anticipation, but also one of regret. We anticipate an adjustment to a new kind of life and a different routine. That which we may accomplish in the future may not make the big headlines, yet one can never be certain. There could be a Shep- pard. or a Grissom, or a Glenn in this very class. Of one thing I am sure. Whatever the task ahead, whether it be glamorous or it be ordinary, each can and should put forth the best effort of which he is capable. This is not only the most certain, but the only road to real happiness. Principal OLIVER S. ALEXANDER A separanon such as we anticipate inevitably causes regret. The termination of happy associa- tions, the cessation of effort on common tasks, the words of encouragement and praise from our friends, the victories won, the defeats endured, all tend to weld us as a people into a powerful force. A termination of these experiences brings regret. However, as we leave may we be aware that we have a common mission. It is that we as representa- tives of our school be ever diligent to bear her standards high and declare her praise. The patterns set and the habits formed during our days and years in Ridley Park High School will to a great degree determine our future. May it be a happy and re- warding one. With very sincere best wishes, J. Layton Moore Supervising Principal 8 Mr. Stiles. Mr. Riddell. Mr. Blanton, Mr . Zarr. Mr. Rice, Mr. Dennison. Mr. Getty. . . . from Capitol Hill To the students of the Ridley Park High School graduating class we extend our sincere congratu- lations as the hour of your commencement approaches. Commencement time is a time of mixed emotions, a time of ending and a time of beginning, a time of remembering and a time for future planning. You have completed your basic training, and tomorrow with your diploma in your hand you will face the world. Your classmates will have scattered far and wide in a world different from the world of books and classrooms. Whatever you do in life, wherever you may be called to perform your duties give it your best. Never be afarid to travel the extra mile. Learn to find enjoyment and pleasure in the simpler things of life; be optimistic in your outlook. Life has its joys and its sorrows, but may yours be a life of joy Always remember, If a man does not know to what port he is steering, no wind is favorable to him. Edith J. The goal of the Retrospect staff has been to try to record the memories of their last year at Ridley Park High School. In the pages of the yearbook, they have attempted to preserve the fond remem- brances for future years. Although most of the work has been done during the school year, the actual planning was made during the summer. The climax of much hard work, of long hours, and of bristling activity has been a reward in itself for the staff. The sense of achieve- ment and the feeling of time well spent have been the profits of the Retrospect staff of 1962. LITERARY STAFF ART STAFF FIRST ROW: K. Rawlik. M. Russell. Editor; N. Rees. FRESHMEN The ninth grade in their first year of high school has made great strides. With Mr. Richard Bell as class advisor, and with the class officers: president, Douglas Ellers: vice-president, David Harvey: treas- urer, John Tani: secretary, Gerald Tantaros, the class has qood leadership. To raise money for their treasury, the class held their annual magazine sub- scription drive. In addition to this, the students have shown an interest in both athletics and scholarship. The freshman class is well on the way to successful high school years. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS D. Ellers, President; G. Tantaros. Secretary; J. Tani, Treasurer; Mr. Bell, Advisor; D. SOPHOMORE ACTIVITIES The Sophomore Class sold Christmas cards to obtain money for their treasury. They had a wonder- ful sale, earning more than $1,000. Ellen Peterson was the top saleswoman. She received a transistor radio as a prize. The class also held dances to boost their income. Through these activities they have a good start for their senior year. FRESHMAN ACTIVITIES As their fund-raising project the freshman class traditionally sells magazine subscriptions, made pos- sible by the Curtis Publishing Company. Although their goal of $2,000 was not reached, the $1,893.05 of subscriptions sold was excellent. Patricia Willis. Mary Mackenson, and Michael Wolk sold the most this year. J. Tani, D. The Parkers finishing the season with a record of four wins and four losses, played hard, tough foot- ball. They almost dethroned untouchable Clifton Heights, but lost in the last few seconds of arduous football. Schools like Swarthmore, Sharon Hill, Yea- don, and Collingdale were no match for the mighty Parker's offense and defense. Teams like Darby and Interboro soon found that the Parkers were not an easy match. Joe Sheffer was elected captain, and John Passmore received the Doc Cornog Trophy, the zenith in Ridley Park football awards. Mr. Wil- son, Mr. Godfrey, and Mr. Wimmer all collaborated to give Ridley Park a team and a record to be admired. Even with its superb foul shooting and with its stupendous field goal shooting, the Parkers lacked a greatly impressive record. Darby was thoroughly frightened as the Parkers came within four points of upsetting the league leaders. Clifton Heights was beaten both times, and the Parkers scored an upset by beating top-contending Nether Providence. Mr. McKeever, the new coach, continually uplifted the team's spirits. Bob Clark (captain), Norman Fergu- son, Larry Murray, John Passmore, and Joe Sheffer were the seniors on the squad. Each did a note- worthy job. THE FLYER Under the editorship of Marilyn Cliff, the Flyer'' staff's goal has been to preserve a record of the school's activities for the 1961- 1962 school year. The staff has tried to report accurately and interestingly club news, faculty news, and class news. The readers this year enjoyed humorous articles, editorials, and sports. The honored senior and honored athlete articles recognized physical prowess and scholastic achievement. Every week a Flyer staff member went to the DELAWARE COUNTY DAILY TIMES office to have his picture taken and to answer the weekly question. Each Friday with students from other schools the picture and answer ap- peared on the school page with the column written by staff members. The Flyer staff hopes its efforts have been enjoyed by the entire student body. 83 FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB FIRST ROW: R. Christian, J. Wichman. B. Yuhasz. J. Lanyon, A. Harvey. A. Nickel. S. Howard. S.
