E We Shook The Family Treen March 5 finally arrives. lt is the night for the juniors to present their annual play. The curtain rises at last and We Shook the Family Tree, directed by Mi. Shaffer, has begun. Hildegard is just plain tired of being a wallflower. In an attempt to find a date for her, Mr. and Mrs. Dolson arrange for Hildegarde to go to the Prom with Freddie. He is a nice enough boy except that he is dominated by his mother and dad who make him wear knickers. The attire always gives him an inferiority complex. Sally, Hildegarde's younger sister, who always tries to imitate her, tries to console her and perhaps help her. jimmy and Bob, Hildegarde's brothers are constantly teasing her and are usually found tinkering around with gadgets or going fishing. Ellie-May and jill are two teenfage girlsg Ellie-May and Bob go together and she winds him around her little finger. Paige, a six-yearfold, starts Hildegarde's trouble by delivering old love letters and causing a lot of trouble. Finally, Freddie breaks into his house, stealing a graduation present, and with the money from it, buys a new suit with long pants. When Mr. and Mrs. Shemier, his parents arrive at the Dolson's there is much excitement. While the family tries to straighten out the whole aflilir, Hildegarde and Freddie slip out to the Prom. .Wi-,sig in in 6 .f f 'Q.,,',,. 3 Toxmv Irenc joncx Dono 'War ze Comznsku CLEOTA S5IL1a Hmklm MRS B1LL1xc,s jackm O Iwzll SENIOR PLAY Cast of Characters DOL BILLINCS lzm Du an FLORA LEE BILLINC s Phxllzs Wackex CHL L K HALL Homer Hupf LLLY THAXTER Alan ana Dans lull DM ID TQRRENLE Bob Martm CASSANDRA THORN Ruth Gurdon En QMITH Walter Natrzn MR CODDLE Rzcluud Bock The Doc as A Daughter On December -1, the Seniors presented their annual play, entitled The Doctor Has a Daughter. under the direction of Mrs. Mary B. The plot centers around the adventures and mise adventures of Miss Tommy Billings, a small town junior miss who has seen too many movies for her own and everyone e1se's good. Tommy manages to get everyone, including herself, into hot water. Her father, the doctor, lived in constant expectation of what she would do next, and her chum Dodo was usually the right hand man in their schemes. Tommy practically ruins the love lives of her sister FlorafLee and the maid Cleota. Miss Thaxter, the school teacher, is nearly driven crazy with the schemes of Tommy who tries to make others happy whether they want to be or not. The wealthy spinster aunt, Cassandra Thorn, pays a visit and when Tommy tries to revive old love affairs, she almost learns a lesson. Some of her schemes are answering Lonely Hearts ads, patching broken hearts, rewriting the school play and a few otheis. But in the end, all turns out happily, and Tommy's family and friends have to agree that she is a terrific little girl. QQ Sig QQ ,ND Qw R'zf1f-f' ' A 'X X x -gf ? gi MQ ei SPUPJE 'w X 31 6' f D Q? During the first few games, the boys exhibited their sparkling defensive ability by holding several of the highest scoring teams in the county to narrow margins. However, their inexperience evidenced itself by the fact that the boys were unable to roll up score enough to overcome their opponents. Despite an unimpressive record, the team showed remarkable improvement against the stiff opposition of the latter part of the season. The team showed a great number of ardent followers because of its spirited hght. The boys showed so much spirit that they often received comments on their enthusiasm from the opponent's followers. It was in such games as the Eddystone contest where their spirit was really displayed. They definitely showed their prowess by tying this highly favored team, 7 to T. The Springfield game, however, proved to be their pride and joy- They were confident that they would win this game, and their fight proved to be enough to defeat Springfield. In retrospect, we can see that our team had an admirable spirit and was greatly respected because of their constant fight. Last but not least, we would like to commend the coaches for the re- markable work they did. They did a splendid job in keeping the boys fighting. Head Coach Doc Comog, Line Coach Sam Godfrey, and Backheld Coach john Wilson all proved to be excellent instructors for a fine group of boys. We want to wish our coaches success for the future. Brown Ulanagerj VARSITY HOCKEY Looking back on the Varsity Squad of fortyfnine, we find a team of which we can be truly proud. An undefeated team, with a record of seven wins and one tie. To start the season, Miss Gladys Hart, substitutf ing for Miss Bassoe, had the job of weeding out the mediocre players and creating the nucleus for a successful year in hockey. Under Miss Hart's care' ful and watchful eye, the varsity and junior varsity and junior squads were chosen. When Coach Bassoe arrived home, the squad didnlt look very hopeful. The first three games, Glen-Nor, Lansdowne, and Ridley Township, ended in l-0 scores in favor of the Ridley Lassies. All three games were hard fought, close battles. Breaking the l-0 jinx by winning 3-l over pref viously undefeated Springfield, our Lassies showed much hidden talent. This game, the highlight of the year, was the tuming point in team spirit. By scoring two goals in the first three minutes of play, the Parkerettes became a very determined group of hockey players. This determination was shown in the next game by a 2-1 victory score over Sharon Hill. The only blemish on the record was the almost fatal game with Eddystone. The high spirited Stonerettes tamed our Lassies by scoring first, our Parkerettes were on the bottom half of the score for the first time all season. A quick goal put Ridley back into the game and tied the score at l-l. Another 1-0 victory over Prospect Park and a 2fl victory over pref viously undefeated Media, ended the season with an almost perfect record for the Varsity Squad of 1949. The junior Varsity didn't do quite as well as the Varsity, but with the impressionable material of the squad, an equally good varsity should be at hand next year. Their schedule, the same as the Varsity, ended with a record of 1 win, 5 defeats, and 2 ties. Graduation takes a heavy toll on the squad this year. Coach Bassoe loses almost the entire Varsity team. The backfield, having been rated as the best in the county, will not return in 1950 because of graduation. Having only four goals scored against us proves that our backfield def served the rating they received. The backfield consists of: Goalie, Ruth Cordong Fullbacks, Mae Benjamin and Peg Mayhughg and Halfbacks, Shirley Martin, Carole Bailey, and Kay McHale. This leaves only joan Bryan, a junior, to hold down the 1950 backfield. On the forward line, the loss isn't quite so greatg center, Mary Bernardo, left wing, Sadi Bonaduceg right inner, Hope McMonigleg and left inner, Bobbie Grant. Three juniors, left to make the mold for next season's team, are wings, Helen Scone, and Ann Minor, and inner, Sylvia Fesco. Late in january, Student Council presented the Undefeated Varsity team with gold hockey pins. Engraved on the backs of the pins are the girls' initials and H1949 CHAMPS, in recognition of their splendid SCHSOI1. VARSITY RECORD Ridley Park ..., .....,.. Ridley Park ..., ..... They also paid for the new baseball diamond estab lished in the far left corner of Cornog field. The team this year took part in an infonnal 14 game schedule as application for a league mem bership was made too late for entrance. The schedule was a prelude to league play in Section IV in 1951. The squad of 22 members showed depth in every position. Much good ball was seen by the 0 spectators and underclassmen gained good experl ence for later years The seniors on the squad were Allan Palmer CPD Ben Chl6H'0 CZBJ john Cill and Homer Hupf QSSJ Wayne Roser Vic Crow and Alan Wood UBB and jack Hearn KO FD SCHEDULE April 6 Ridley Township away April 10 Chester away April 18-Glen Nor away April 20 Eddystone away April 21 Sharon Hill home April 24-Chester home May May May May May May May May -Media home fSharon Hill away AUpper Chichester home -P. Over the years the Ridley' Park Track Teams have led all other sports in the win and loss column, i050 was no exception. lt is safe to say that every' boy tried as hard, and wanted to win, as much as possible. Leoking back, we see many things: the heart- breaking loss by inches in the mile, the breathf taking jump in the pole vault, high jumps or broad jump. Not to be forgotten was the double win in the hundred and the quarter mile. or in the discus and the slfot. in future years, when the members of the 1950 Track Team hear the crack of the starter's pistol. l. livin:-iili, li. They will see Mike winning the sl-ot and the javelin. Nick winning the half-mile. Monk winning the mile, and Lew capturing one of the sprints. And look, there are Zig, Norm, and flake. Whos that red-head? That's Ken. There's Dave working on the hurdles, an.l Big Lar playing with the discus. And there's Doc' with the tape and Mr. Boyd with the starting gun. Only now that it is all over, do we realize the great heln and inspiration that both Doc an:l Mr. Boyd were. Yes, we remember a lot of things. and fortunately most of them are pleasant.
