One of the important facts is that our enrollment is in- creasing. This is evidenced by the picture of our freshman class. Another is that our curriculum has been added to and, among these additions, now includes a special college preparatory class in chemistry which goes beyond the usual high school course in this subject. A picture of part of this group at work appears after the CLASS divisional page. A third fact is that it is now generally recog- nized that each high school stu- dent should be given individual help in meeting his high school i'i ' and vocational problems. To sat- isfy this need, this year, for the first time, a counselor was ap- pointed and soon became an in- tegral part of our school life. That our school spirit is lively and good is attested to by our pictures of the dances, sports ac- tivities, assemblies, and Christ- mas decorations. The serious highlights are laced with amusing sidelights which appear at intervals throughout the book and on the full pages especially planned to show them. A yearbook is a durable thing that lasts many years. So, if in the years to ccme, our graduates leaf through the pages of this annual with a feeling of pride in their Alma Mater, then the ELKER Staff of T958 will have reason to feel that they have accomplished their purpose. 4 Contents FACULTY P g 8 CLASSES P g I4 ACTIVITIES P g 36 ATHLETICS P g 54 A X w ,, .Z - I if NMI iw I I ff? Castafero fleftl, Director of Curriculum, and Senor Luis G. Benitez frightl, of the Ministry of Education, Asun- cion, Paraguay discuss methods, techniques, and types of administration and super- vision in their respective countries. Senor Benitez was sponsored by the U. S. State Department through the Pennsyl- vania State University under Latin American Proiect gli8. He spent six weeks in our schools with the direction and guidance of Dr. Castafero, and then upon his return to Paraguay was appointed Chief of Second- ary Education. The Ridgway Area Joint School System and Dr. Castafero have been cited by the State Department and the Pennsylvania State University for their contribution to the Latin American Project and Senor Benitez. 'IO One of the needs of a modern, up-to- date school was met in our system this year when a Guidance Counselor, Mr. Layton Matchulet Cpictured at rightl was appointed. Since then he has, on the bases of test results and personal conferences, helped the students plan their courses and activities according to a definite pattern with a vo- cational goal in sight. The fact that each student must some day take his place as a productive member of society is inescapable, and, for the good of the individual and society, the place that he takes should not be left haphazardly to chance,-but rather must be the result of guided foresight and planning. Counseling, too, by assisting each pupil to make elfective adiustments to his high school environment, also lays the basis tor helping him to adiust himself to any new situations in which he will live. A Tale of Graduation Life is like a story book With many chapters told, Some are happy, some are sad, About the young and old. The chapter, I shall emphasize From this lifelong story, ls the tale of graduation, Every scholar's quarry. Now when we, the class of 58 , Think back through the years, And see the many happy days, Our eyes will fill with tears. Never look back, but ever on, To future years ahead, For when we're old, there'll be plenty of time To see the paths we've tread. The teachers here have molded us For different walks of life, Now the rest is up to us To overcome the strife. Some will be doctors, lawyers, teachers, Others nurses, carpenters, preachers. But whatever you do, don't iust scratch the surface, For in everyone's life there must be fa purpose. Doris Hooven 28 Commencement Exercises Processional Invocation Solo .,... . Home COMMENTS Elkers opened the season still feeling the football kinks. Too many good shots-opponent wise. A disastrous fourth quarter, our first win. Taste of victory seemed good even for the second team, as they replaced a flu-ridden 'lst team. Our first league game--played at Duke Center. Johnsonburg knocked us down, our 2nd straight League loss at home. Tom Dunn broke his finger in practice the night before-a costly break. Were in the Kane game all the way, but lost out in the closing seconds. 40 personal fouls were called-T5 against us and 25 against Emporium. Was a long night, the bus caught fire and so did Port -they were realIy big. We wuz robbed! Leading all the way-lost on a had call of an official. Provecl to be an oddity-beat Shettiefd on their own court . . . Austin, Eagen, Zimmerman, and Sho- bert, T6-T5-'I2-10, respectively. Were well pressed by the League-leading team, St. Marys. Sweet revenge over Otto Township, although no one was hitting. A real upset-probably our biggest game of the year-it's been years since Ridgway has won at 'Burg. Zimmerman and Dunn both out-hurt us at Em- porium as tl-re score shows. A great game but a loss at the Armory for the Elkers. Smethport r:ouldn't miss a foul-we lost at the foul line and outscored them from the field. Sheffield Midgets couldn't miss at Ridgway-won in a real basketball game. Everybody was hep for this game, including St. Marys-They won a hard fought game. The ELKERS closed the season winning 6 and losing T4-Robert Austin led the scoring with 253 points, closely followed by William Eagen with 220. Jerry Zimmerman had 152, and Larry Shobert 87. Nelson with visitors at Mr. Herbert King, president of the Open House during National Edu- newly formed Jr.-Sr. High P.T.A., cation Week. and Mr. Edwards with seniors on the panel which discussed Extra. curricular Activities. One One One One One One One One One One, One One One One One One One One That's A Friend whose grip is a little tighter, whose smile is a little brighter, whose deeds are a little whiter, That's what I call a friend. who'll lend as quick as he'll borrow, who's the same tcday as tomorrow, who'll share your joy and sorrow, That's what I call a friend. whose thoughts are a little cleaner, whose mind is a little keener, who avoids those things that are meaner, That's what I call a friend. when you're gone, who'll miss you sadly, who'll welcome you back again gladly, who, though angered, will not speak madly, That's what I call a friend. who is always willing to aid you, whose advice has always paid you, who's defended when others flayed you, That's what l call Cl friend. who's been fine when life seemed rotten, whose ideals you have not forgotten, who has given you more than he's gotten, That's what l call a friend. John Burroughs 70 We would not think our '58 ELKER complete if we did not pay tribute to our Mr. Edwards. It would be very difficult to surpass the wording of the tribute paid to him by Mr. Abel in his editorial in the March 5 issue of the RIDGWAY RECORD so we are herewith reprinting that editorial. We'll Miss Him Announcement yesterday of the resigna- tion of C. Stuart Edwards as principal of Ridg- way High School indeed was sad news for this community. Mr. Edwards, during his five-year associa- tion with the local school, has come to be ac- cepted as an outstanding administrator and a fine citizen. Men of the high quality of Mr. Edwards come along all too infrequently. No community can afford to lose this type of person without suf- fering a setback. The loss of Mr. Edwards comes at an espe- cially bad time. We are about to commence con- struction on a new S2 million iunior-senior high school, and our capable and veteran superinten- dent of schools does not have too many years to go before he will retire. It is with deep regret that we accept the news of Mr. Edwards' resignation. All of us who knew or have associated with him realize the void which will remain when he has departed to accept his new assignment at Bloomsburg State Teachers College. In this new role, we wish Stu Edwards every best wish for continued success. We know that Bloomsburg will appreciate him and be as proud of him as we have been here.
