Looking back we realize that our progress from grade to grade and finally to graduation was due to the constant efforts and supervision of our teachers. We are very grateful for the patience with which they have worked with us, and we know that our association with them has been of vital importance in the building of our lives. -Senior Class of 1955 ..24.. -if 'A' ixw..,N H A 5 -A n:::,,..., 3:-N ani? wi-wf Xue? g-u:..N-A 2 . 7 13? ,f Ls! Pifer lMr. Kellyj. The Senior Dlciq The senior class of 1955, on the evening of December 9, presented a three-act comedy entitled Clementine. The whole play revolved around Clemen- tine's transformation from a tomboy to a young lady. When Clem was invited to go to Cathy's Girl-Date Party, she reluctantly asked Hank in a very ungracious manner. Hank refused Clem, but accepted Cathy's invitation. This irked Clem, so she decided she would get revenge on Hank by beating him in an oratorical contest. During the contest Clem angered Miss Prin- gle who had quite a bit of influence in town elections as head of the Women Voters' League. Since Clem's father was running for mayor, this might have ruined his chances to win. Clem won the contest, but when she learned she had en- dangered her father's chances to be elected, she went to Miss Pringle and apologized and sold her on her dad's program. By this action Clem proves to Hank that she is a lady and wins his heart which brings the play to a happy conclusion. Much credit must be given to the cast and Miss Jones, the director, for producing such a good play. W 'v-1 Whiz if W ,. PL W 'S fa . My . l nr M - A, 1 . Vene- ziano, Assistant Photography Editor, This year the seniors planned the yearbook in a different manner by electing the editorial staff for the 1955 Elker in the spring. The editors met with the representative of the yearbook com- pany and planned the layout of the book. Then when we returned in the fall the dummy was here and we were all ready to start to work. Looking for ways to have our book more attractive, we decided to use paper sculpture and photography in making up the division pages. The editorial staff contributed its part by making the write-ups more colorful, and the photography staff endeavored to shift from old, standard ideas of placement to new and different ones. Individ- ual and group pictures were taken during the last week in September and the first week in October. The book was Hnanced by the annual maga- zine subscription sale, the sale of yearbooks, the sale of candy in the cafeteria, and the sale of refreshments at football games. The proceeds from our very successful Eno-Ball were also de- voted to the yearbook. All the staff members are to be commended for working faithfully and for giving their time so that this year's Elker would be a success. However, we all know that this success would not have been possible without the aid and guid- ance of our advisor, Miss Harper. To her we offer our heartiest thanks. Student Council The aims and purpose of the Student Coun- cil were to coordinate and promote activity and encourafie participation on the part ot the stu- dents. The council also had the responsibiltiy of developing in the students a growing apprec- iation of membership in a democracy by provid- ing the educative responsibilities of, and princi- ples of participation in such a democracy in the school. Likewise the council provided opportunity for the development of leadership and promoted the general welfare ot the student body and the school. The council representing the entire student body was under the supervision of Miss Lauder, the faculty advisor. The group this year consisted of 25 members. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Left to Right: M. This year, in addition to school news and Roman customs and oddities, it has added pages from the French and Spanish class- es. Under the capable direction of Miss Lauder, faculty advisor, and Beverly Hayes, editor, the paper was published eight times during the past school year. Penn State on November 6, when it took part in High School Band Day, They participated in the parade and in the half-time performance. They also saw the game between Penn State and Holy Cross. The Ridgway High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Lewis W. Ziegler added a lot of color to football games this year by their snappy numbers which they played during the games and by their varied types of half-time routines. Each year a big improvement has been made in the band both in musical ability ancl in appearance. Several new instruments were pur- chased for the band by the employees of the Elliott Company. The maiorettes sported new uniforms at the Reynoldsville and Johnsonburg football games. Again this year, there was a pep band which participated in the pep meetings held by the cheerleaders before each game. The R. H. S. Band made a fine showing at the band settled down to hard work on concert music. Several students represented our band at the Tri City Band Concert which was held in January. Some of the R. H. S. musicians also attended the District Band Festival held in Mans- field, Pennsylvania. In April, after months of in- tensive practice, the band headed for Clarion State Teachers' College to enter the forensic com- petition. We were justifiably proud of our band this year and are looking forward to a bigger and better band in the future. Girls' Chorus Back Row: left to right, S. J. Lund, K. Luchs, P. Himes, A. It Weis Worth Waiting For In the traditional November ll clash it was a determined Elker squad against a slight overcontident Burg outfit. The teams swapped punches the tirst half with two Burg thrusts being stopped inside the Elker twenty. As the second half got underway it became apparent that the relentless onslaught of the big Ridgway line was taking its toll as the Rambler backs were thrown tor long and repeated losses. Midway through the third quarter Tom Prechtl took a hand-off 'From his quarterback and tight-roped forty yards ot pay-dirt, only to have it called back Here the Elkers again showed what kind of stutt they were made of as they fought back with everything they had and pushed across a touchdown with only a minute and a half to go. The scoring play was an Allegretto to Crocco pass that was Used at exactly the right time and caught Burg completely off guard. Their tally accounted tor all the scoring in the game and gave Ridgway a six to nothing C6-Ol win over their arch rivals. -56- Back Row: Left to right, Mr. Johnson, Coach, E. Krise, T. Thompson, E. ELKERS GET OFF TO POOR START The '54 Elker football season got off to a low start when the team was soundly defeated by Kane 25 to O. The whole game was decided in the first quarter when the Wolves took an l8-O lead. The rest of the game was played in even terms with the ball changing hands constantly. At this point it looked like we had a long season ahead of us. TWO IN A ROW The next game the team showed a lot of improvement but were defeated by the rugged Emporium Red Raiders 27 to 13. Before the game was a few minutes old Melvin Gardner, Ridgway end, picked up an Emporium fumble and raced 60 yards for a touchdown. However, the rest of the game was all Emporium although the Elkers did stage a hard last quarter rally and tried to cut the score. Fred Matheson scored the other Ridgway touchdown. WE DID IT AGAIN Yes, our Elkers did it again. They lost to the pent-up Brockway Rovers by a score of T3 to 7. The team as a whole showed little after the loss of scrappy halfback, Tom Veneziano, early in the second quarter. Brokway scored in the first and last stanzas while Ridgway's lone tally came on a three yard effort by Fred Matheson and an extra point by Bob Matha. IT'S ABOUT TIME In front of a meager showing of home fans, the Elkers finally got the offensive gears to mesh and promptly reeled off a i9 to 6 victory over the hapless Dutch. It marked the Elkers' first win in four starts and the fourth setback for the St. Marys Dutch in as many tries. The Elkers' touch- downs were made by Fred Matheson, George Paris, and Tom Prechtl. The extra point was made by Jim Allegretto. TWO IN A ROW The Elkers were high as kites for this game and showed very well on defense. The Brook- ville Raiders came close only once and spent the rest of the time bottled up in their own territory. Dick Matha was perhaps the defensive star for Ridgway, as he blocked two punts and stopped the Raider backs for repeated loss. The offensive punch for the Elkers was furnished by Bleak Allegretto who had a touchdown and two extra points. Fred Matheson and Tom Veneziano each had a touchdown. The Elkers won this game by a 20 to O score and showed that at least they were ready to move. FOOTBALL GRINDS TO A STOP IN RIDGWAY At a special meeting of the board of Health it was decided that the polio outbreak in Ridgway was of severity enough to stop all forms of un- necessary physical exercise. lnto this category fell football, so for Two weeks the sport of foot- ball didn't exist in Ridgway. The polio ban forced cancellation of our games with Smethport and Warren. BOUNCING BACK STORNG The Elkers came out of their long lay-off and promptly scored two quick touchdowns on Reyn- oldsville. It didn't seem important at the time that both extra points were missed, but as the game wore on, Reynoldsville matched Ridgway's touchdowns and added two PATs to go ahead with only three minutes left in the ball game. Here Ridgway massed their forces and started a drive of some seventy yards to a touchdown, an extra point, and victory. Bob Matha and Mickey Crocco accounted for the Elker's early scoring, while Tommy Veneziano tallied Ridg- way's winning marker. The Elkers won their ball game by a 19 to 14 count. JR. HI. Opp. 7 7 4 4 1 9 2 5 I 3 2 1 2 Track The Ridgway High School track squad opened a tair season with first-'place honors in a dual meet at Clarion. The dashes proved The weakness in the Riolgway team as they swept the field events, relays, and mile run, but tailed to show prowess in the sprints. The point totals were Ridgway 61, Clarion 56. On a windswept field at Smethport the Elker squad showed poorly in all the events and tallied only 42 points. The totals were Smeth- port 74, Ridgway 42. AT Bradford The dashes proved The undoing of The R. H. S. thin-clads as They lost a close meet, 54 to 42. DuBois played host tor a Triangular meet and totaled 72 points. Ridgway amassed 40 and placed second. In the District 9 meet at Smethport, Ridgway placed Third among The Class B schools, and qualified two boys for competition in the state meet held at Penn State University. Bill Fannin, Everett Lyle and Bob Matha were the consistent point winners for Ridgway. Mr. Marts deserves a great deal ot credit for working a young and inexperienced group into a well-rounded team.
