The Student Council provides an opportunity for the student in the way of civic responsibility, and of fulfillment of his need to understand and cope with problems common to his age group. The aims of every Student Council are to create understanding and cooperation between students and faculty, to foster a cooperative student government, and to promote the general welfare of the student body. Each council does, however, in addition to these aims have others less basic in nature. Ridgewood High School is fortunate to have an effective student gov- erning body in its Student Council. Representatives of each homeroom and of each standing committee meet on Mondays during seventh period. The officers of Student Council consist of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer elected by the student body. A nominating com- mittee, headed by the vice-president, nominates candidates for each office on the basis of his past record and citizenship qualifications as well as his potentiality. The record of every student is considered by the com- mittee before the final slate is drawn up and offered to the Student Coun- cil for ratification. On being chosen for the slate, each candidate organizes a campaign committee and prepares for a hectic week of electioneering, which is climaxed by the introduction of the candidates to the entire student body and the speeches by each presidential nominee, outlining his platform. Student registrations are recorded by a council appointed committee and voting machines are installed to facilitate the actual election, in which every student of Ridgewood High School has the privilege of participating. The results of the actual election are kept secret for a High Times scoop. Hampered by an inadequate constitution, this year's council set out to do something about it. The decision, that the constitution would need much revision and a set of by-laws, entailed the formation of a commit- tee to make the necessary alterations. Several months of hard and tedious work followed before the desired results were acquired. The main body of the council is made up of the homeroom representa- tives. The representative is elected by his homeroom to serve as its am- bassador. The representative gives reports on current Student Council business and also brings up any item of business his homeroom wants dis- cussed. The standing committee heads are presidential appointments subiect to approval by the council. The duties of each chairman are to keep his division of RHS running smoothly and also to serve on the Student Council Cabinet. The council also worked on broadening the activities and sports pro- grams. As the facts point out, Ridgewood High School has every reason to be proud of its truly outstanding Student Council. ,yy 7,5 15,5 . Ex 'WHGH'HMES' First Row: N. Gill, Y. Clarke, V. Wales, M. GIRLS SPORTS COUNCIL Mention the Girls Sports Council to many of the Ridgewood High School members and you'll receive a look of either com- plete astonishment or, most likely, blank unconcern. lt is quite true that comparatively little is known about this organiza- tion, though it meets regularly Thursday 7th period in room 4. One is inclined to think that it's a time when a group of I5 girls get together for a 45 minute tea party. This is not true. like any other organization, we, too, are faced with problems, our largest one being the participation of girls in after school sports. Attracting girls to our sports of hockey, volley ball, basketball, tennis, and soft ball is not in the least way easy, as we have tried just about all the tricks in the book. Admit- ting that we have not been too successful, we don't let it bother us, for each year there will be someone in there earn- estly working for some mere portion of success. Although we are few in number, we feel that those girls in sports who do participate show a generous amount of skill and sportsman- ship, something of which the high school can be proud. Each seasonal sport sponsored by the council is headed by two managers who are chosen by the council from the council. lt is the duty of these managers to take care of the publicity, equipment, selection of teams and inter-school competition. An amount of S100 is received by the council from the A.A. annually, however, we sponsor a student-faculty basket- ball game, a bake sale, and in previous years have sold sweat shirts to increase our funds. like any other organization, our funds are in constant deflation. Since the council is a member of the Bergen County Girls Sports Council, we have financial obligations of annual dues, donations to Sports Care Packages and a Scholarship Fund. The largest amount goes to the Scholarship Fund to help a person who wishes to continue in the field of Physical Edu- cation. We are proud of our membership in the county council not only because the offices of secretary and historian are held by R.H.S. members, but because we feel that the council is helping to build a better understanding of the need for sports activities in the early life. Other than the financial obligations to the county, our council must also supply the referees and refreshments for the inter-school games held here, plus the athletic awards given to girls who have actively participated in after-school sports. We, as members, will admit that this organization is a small one, easy to be forgotten. Nevertheless, we are proud of it. First Row, left to right: C. Kline, R. Weiss, R. Doyne, P. Green, G.
