Most of us, srn e we were our own architects, made no blue- prmted plans but just went ahead. The wise few, however took time to lay their plans well, and today tnev have progressed much farther than the others. A L XJ ' ' ' mx , , - 3-7 - - Y M V l 4657 e Arrowu With its largest staff in many semesters and several new ideas for departments the ABROW made three appearances as a literary magazine this year under the d1f9Cl1OI'l of Editor in Chief Dick Leonard All efforts were centered toward making it a timely interesting and decorative periodical efforts which resulted in an All American superior rating at the National Scholastic Press Association After taking a brief concensus of student readlng tastes it was decided to enlarge the Hall of Fame print indlvidual resumes of the football and basketball games and introduce an editorial department and an almanac of high s hool act1v1t1es known as Notes on 1939 Artwork of a superior nature adorned the pages Behind this production was Art Editor Barbara Houchin who was later suc ceeded by Muriel Tether Eleanor Gibson and Virginia St Peter edited the Story and Verse capably Donald Terhune managed the Hall of Fame efficiently Herbert Harrigan and Phil Kilbourne provided amusing Humor Mariorie Carr maintained a timely Book with the Notes on 1939 and Thomas Stapleton reviewed sports activities with competency Margaret Hardenbergh balanced the budget as head of the business department which was supervised by Mr Benedict Mr Darby kept a watchful eye over the literary staff Mr Oring turned out a printing Job of superlative dimensions and Mr Bookstaber and Miss Piaget assisted with the artwork Six staff members Virginia St Peter lohn Chandler Anne Tenney Ieannette MacDonald Dick Leonard and Betty Davison attended the Columbia Scholastic Press Conference and heard many Journalists discuss modern trends and give suggestions for beter Journalism Other s n1or members of the staff were Marion Sloat Arlene Kidder Donald Malcolm Marion May Helen Berner William Kavner Franklin Smedes Shirley Smith Betty Haring Gertrude Thurston and leanee lohnson All things considered this year s magazine was one of quality featured reading material of interest and possessed what is probaoly the finest artwork ever to appear in any ARROW Th ' l I I and Stage Sectiong Thomas Adams kept abreast of school activities . . . Girls Club Barabara Houchin President Mary lane Telfer Vice President Miriam Rowan Secretary lean Griffin Treasurer The purpose of the Girls Club is to face lite squarely and to find and give the best Although this 1S not always lived up to it does serve as a good reminder After all the sophomores have become familiar with the club dolngs its code and pur pose and have decided to Join the club and try to live up to the remind the members of the fact that there IS interest in the all around development of each and every girl The symbol of the Girl Reserves IS a triangle within a circle The triangle represents the mental sp1r1tual and physical sides of a girl and of course these three sides must be well balanced in order to give a girl a well balanced personality As the triangle grows so grows the circle around 1t This circle symbolizes interest in a circle of friends and interest in all people The Girls Club programs are all planned around this symbol They are designed to help the girls develop their mental and spiritual as well as social lives Especially emphasized this year was understanding between adults and girls Teas talent programs and d1scuss1on groups with adults were held to help increase tolerance for and comprehension of the different ld9CIS and opinions which the two groups have The Mother Daughter and Father Daughter banquets sponsored respectively by the Junior girls and the sophomore girls were espe rally interesting because they brought out for the parents the creative ability and or1gmal1ty ot the girls For many years the seniors of the club have put on annually a Cabaret and the money made at these affairs has been laid aside in the hope that someday there might be a new YW This year their work was rewarded' Of course 1n the old building the club was right across from the Warner and quite in the limelight but there Just wasnt enough room This last fall the g1rls learnlng that We could move to larger and better quarters became even more anxious to keep up their respons1b1l1t1es in Girls Club 468i I mf A l I X - - ' A' mx . The average attendance for the year was 55 boys which is somewhat larger than last years total membership and about twice last years attendance record. Three advisers gave of their time to aid the club - Mr. Mease Mr. Foley and Mr. Reynolds. Dick Leonard was president of the Hi-Y Council and the Maroon Chapter. Boy Coningswood was the Maroon vice-president Bill Fricke treasurer- Arthur Prior secretary. White Chapter officers were Nelson Lord president' Donald Terhune vi e-president David Parker secretary- Ward Oakley treasurer. lames Tomai was treasurer of the Hi-Y Council. Arthur Helmers represented the club at the State Older Boys Conference at Trenton. He sat in a mock session of the state legislature and secured passage of Ridgewood s bill. I . . . ,H - x., 1 1 ' Tumor Red Cross loseph Shanaphy President Elis Yaden Secretary Betty Davison Vice President Ethel Sproul Treasurer Miss Nell Powell Faculty Adviser The Iunior Red Cross opened its busy year with a successful get acquainted party for the new members of the Ridgewood High School There was a large attendance and when the party was over it is believed those newcomers felt more at home in RH S The biggest event of the year was the spectacular production of They Shall Be Heard a living newspaper drama Mr Ogden Mr Stryker and Mr Bookstaber who were in charge of the pro duction, took a group of students into New York to see One Third of the Nation a similar type of play After the performance the students were permitted to explore the sets so that they might have a better idea of how to construct the1r own This was accomplished through long hours of experimenting The lighting problem was also a difficult Job to work out Each of the ten small stages some ele vated had to be lighted from different spotlights The speaking was done by narrators through microphones and had to be Finally after much rehearsing what had seemed an almost im possible undertaking was ready for presentation This pageant which was presented three times turned out to be one of the finest programs ever put on in the hlgh school As the pageant was received so enthusiastically by both the student and adult audiences 1t was thought other schools might be interested in knowing about it so an article with illustrations was submitted to the Iunior Red Cross Iournal This has been accepted and will be published preceding Roll Call next Fall Work at Christmas included sending menu covers to sa1lors on board ships cards and gifts to veterans at Lyons New lersey and giving out baskets to the needy which we also did at Thanksgiving A party with gifts and refreshments was given for thirty children in the Paterson Orphanage ln March tne group sponsored a benef1t card party which netted over S40 us d to send delegates to the National convention in Washington A party for the chrldren in Bergen Pines Pre ventorium and an entertainment for the men and women in the Old Peoples Home completed the activities for the year 4745 T I I 9 A, . , . , ' syncronized with the pantomime action on the various stages. A -, , cf , ' . , A , N I V t C 477i Student Council Student Council is the name that has been given to the form of student government practised in Ridgewood High School From every homeroom in the building comes a representative to attend all the councils meetings All other clubs and organizations are invited to do likewise In the spring of each year the students elect by popular vote the president and the vice president for the ensuing year Custom has it that the president shall be a boy and the vice president a member of the opposite sex These officers automatically become members of the Student Committee which acts as a board of directors or a steerage com mittee This committee IS rnade up of three members elected from each class by the students in the respe tive classes Some of their duties are to sift the Various complaints and forms of business and to plan for the counc l s meetings They also select a se retary for the council for the year as president Grace Cooke as vice president and lean Griffin as secretary Meetings are held the first Monday of each month and are supplemented by the committee meetings on Thursday mornings The chief proiect for this year was the establishment of some system or code by wht h the student body can arrive at a higher standard of honor lt is sincerely hoped that future coun ils will not let this very Worthwhile idea fall flat or lag in any way It is also hoped that the future Student Councils will meet with as much cooperation as this one has been fortunate to enloy and that the members of the councll will continue to appreciate their responsibility as the members of this one have ln addition to the honor system prolect the task of efficiently managing the details that are of immense importance in running the school although they may not appear too important was carried out efficiently to make the school as pleasant as possible from the standpoint of an efficient government i ' ' . c This year the council was ably guided by Walter Livingston Girls' Gflee Club Chapel Program Commlttee Second ChOlF French Club German Club lrltematlonal Club Football Golf Soccer Basketball Track Baseball Rldlllq fx 'pf--ad Cheerleadmq Tenms Glrls Baseball Gunls Swlmmmg Gnrls Tenms . L f I X I N Girls Basket ba Managers Tuesday Club-Nancy Doerr Thursday Club Dorothy Rider The Basketball Club met every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon during the winter season in the Girls Gym A total of nlnety members took part in the games and activities sponsored bY the club There were six schools represented at a play sponsored bY the Westwood girls A feature of this affatr was a spaghett1 drnner Nancy Doerr Dor1s Doscher Pat Bathmann Martha Hadeland Madge Orltn and Sally Green attended thls affair On March 9th Teaneck invited us to a four school play day The following girls were chosen to attend Enid Taff Betty Bltchle lane Burrows Pat Green Sue Green and Shirley Weemhoff Stx of our g1rls went to Paterson on Saturday March llth to play for the Bergen County Iunior Officials examination Martha Hadeland received a National rating in basketball officiating At a later date lane Burrows Madge Orin Cora Preston and Sally Iune Fletcher were given a local rating The examination passed by these girls was set up by the National Committee Another event of interest was the Faculty Basketball game This was held tn the Boys Gym on February llth The vlctorious student team was composed of such stars as Pat Bathmann Coralie Harnett Virginia Bown Dor1s Doscher Nancy Doerr and Dorothy Rider The final score was 27 to 24 in favor of the student team The chmaxmg event of the season was the Bergen County Playday sponsored by Ridgewood on Saturday March 18th Fer dinand was used as the theme Seventeen schools from the county each sent six players Distinguished Judges from outside of the county Judged the girls while they played and announced two All Star Teams who played one another during the afternoon ora Preston and Sally Green were selected to be members of the Bergen County All Star Team Mr Somerville welcomed the girls and talked to them about their sports Durrng the day the girls participated in the following events Basketball Volleyball Relays Individual Sports and Roller Skating 1867 I X I l I ' I Green also qualified for this national rating. H . . - C . . 1 . , . - 1 1 189D G11 lSl Archery Every Wednesday afternoon f1nds the R1dgewood I-hgh School Qlhl9l1C f1eld occup1ed by some forty g1rls who are battl1ng for bulls eyes at a regular meetmg of the Gtrls Archery Club Under the watchful gu1dance of MISS Ehzabeth M Sell1er these modern D1anes learn the proper techn1que of speed1ng arrows through space to a favorable spot on the target Although the vast maJor1ty of the g1rls start from scratch and many of them have never held bows before Jo1n1ng the club the results are surpr1s1ngly good Thxs year s group turned out so suc cessfully that two of the g1rls lane Burrows and En1d Taft won gold medals for the1r shoot1ng excellence 1n a contest at Hackensack on May 20 E1ght schools from th1s sect1on of the state were shoot1ng 1n compet1t1on there and the honor g1ven to these g1rls was really s1gn1f1cant Th1S IS one athlet1c act1v1ty that keeps go1ng all year round In the fall and sprmg the vars1ty f1eld IS the scene of the act1v1ty but when wmter makes 1t 1mposs1ble to shoot out of doors the G1rls month the 1nd1v1dual scores are subm1tted to a Northern New Iersey contest wh1ch makes awards at the end of the year for the hlghest 1nd1v1dual scores There IS never any coax1ng to get the club members out for the1r Wednesday afternoon sess1ons The fact that the archers enloy the1r work 1S shown 1n the1r attendance record and scores both of which are conslstently hlgh Archery IS one of the few sports that wr1ters and cr1t1cs have unammously agreed IS su1ted for women Wh1le other sports have a tendency to overdevelop certaln muscles and stra1n others arch ery 1S a moderate but effect1ve method of exercrse that results m an 1mproved posture better general phys1cal cond1t1on and sol1d en1oy ment for those who part1c1pate Thls sport 1S well founded at R1dQ9WOOd H1gh many years hav1ng w1tnessed the speedy fllght of the tr1m wood shafts that leave wellmampulated bows to f1nd the1r marks 1n garly pa1nted targets The future of th1s pleasant form of GXGICISG w1ll probably be as glow1ng as the past as 1t IS as oenef1c1al and 1t IS emoyable Gym becomes the battle grounds.
