After a summer of nine band concerts, the retuming band members gaily took their familar seats in the band formation in the church. Mr. Shileny was all pepped up to go with another year of instrumental music. In the fall the Band Mothers sponsored a Corn Cami- val to raise money for band instruments. The night of the camival started with a short concert given by the band. The whole affair was a big success with the crowning of the king and queen, as the highlight of the evening. With the money that was taken in, new instruments were pur- chased for the band. The next concert was given at Christmas in a com- bination vocal and instrumental program. Several num- bers were played by the band, and the band also accom- panied a vocal selection. Coming back from vacation we again resumed our ROSEL'S PHARMACY Your Prescription Headquarters Decorah, Iowa practices. We began practicing our ensembles and solos for the State Music Contest. On April 4th the annual Band Festival at Cresco was held. The day was very rainy and few bands attended. Ridgeway was there! David Sime and Ferdie Armstrong attended the Dorian Instrumental Festival at Luther College. The State Music Contest, on April 12, was at Volga City. Pulling out at 6:30 a.m., the day brought the sax trio composed of Andrea Bakken, Ramona Anderson, and Cary Hovden a I rating. The drum ensemble, consisting of Kay Trytten, Tommy Trytten, Sandra Fjelstul, and Leilani Hovden, received a II, and Elaine Wemark a II on a french horn solo. In the fall quite a few eager students assigned their voices for twice a week with Mr. Asbe. These were the students in Girls' Glee Club, Boys' Glee Club, and Mixed Chorus. They took part in the all-school Christmas Program with the band. Sandra Fjelstul, Kay Trytten, and JeRoy Fjelstul were selected from our vocal department to take part in the annual Dorian Vocal Festival at Luther College. In March the soloists and trio began practicing their se- lections which would be judged at the State Music Contest to be held at Volga City. Finally the day arrived fApril 12thJ and together with the band they journeyed to Volga City for a very exciting day. Andrea Bak- ken and Kay Trytten received a division I rating in Treble Voice Medium solos. .IeRoy Fjelstul's baritone solo also received a I, along with the girls trio. Those receiving II's on solos were: Ramona Anderson, and Denis We- mark. A few of the favorites of the Girls' Glee Club were There's a Hole in My Bucket , Some Folks Do , and Angel Voices Ever Singing The boys don't say much about what they sing.
