Mr. Shileny had a bit of re- building to doin the bass section, due to the loss of two fine trombonists and sousaphonists. The first semester found the pep band giving support to the basketball teams with their marches atthe home games. A Christ- mas Concertwas presented jointly by the Band and Vo- cal departments before school dismissed forthe holi- days. Coming back from a hearty vacation, practice ses- sions were resumed. Selections were now being con- sidered by soloists and ensembles for the State Music Contest. The band also set to work and tackled Poet and Peasant overture. This proved to be a challenge and in mid-February Mr. Rober made a tape-recording ofouraccomplishment. We firstheard The Boston Sym- phony play it, then we recorded. The playback sur- prised most of us as the results were quite good. Jean, Treva, Harlan and Cheryl were selected from our band to participate in the Dorian Music Festival at Luther College. The band attended the annual Cresco Band Festival on April 12. Our newly organized ensem- ble groups performed before critics and received favor- able comments. Garnavillo was the site of the State music Contest on April 14, and this meant an e arly departure from school. Students taking part in this event were: Mary Jane Aga, Ferdie Armstrong, Cheryl Aschim, Andrea Bakken, Harlan Bakken, Lila Bakken, Jeroy Fjelstul, Sandra Fjelstul, Leilani Hovden, Betty Jir a k, Wayne Kreitzer, Kenneth Nesvik, Alan Rue, Beverly Rue, David Sime, Treva Sime, Jean Smith, Kay Trytten, Tommy Trytten, Dennis Wemark, Marilyn Wemark and Wayne Wemark. About 10:00 p.m., when all our groupshad finished playing,we set out for home. After journeying a few miles, a few members decided they were not as sleepy asthe rest and proceeded to liven things up with a jam session.
