We left New York on the Queen Elrzabeth for France the next mornlng None of us had ever taken a crurse before and Sharon became seasrck the f1rst day We took her to the shtp doctor and she was later left tn charge of the nurse who turned out to be none other than DEIAINE VATTHAUER She soon recovered and we enjoyed the rest of our trrp We arrtved tn Parts two weeks later It was very ratny Whrle tn Parts vtsrted the famous Dtor Shop and met the head destgner JEAN SMITH We also went to the Place de L Opera and heard ELAINE PHIPPS s1ng the leadrng role We left Parts for Afrtca where we were tntroduced to the famous hunter MILTON QUAM He gave us a whxte 1vory elephant tooth for a souvenlr From AfrtcawewenttoBelg1um Italy Germany Po land and Russta At Russla we stopped fora longer perrod of trme because we wanted to vrstt the Amertcan am bassador to Russla WAYNE KREITZER We talked to htm for several hours and then left for Chrna From Chrna we went to Japan and there we saw SANDRA AMUNDSON teachrng basketball to the lxttle Japanese Shewas ustng many of the plays that we used when we played together m high school From Japan we satled to Hawa11 When we arrtved there Kay was very anxlous to learn the hula so we wenttothe Hula Studlo We were amazed to learn that rt was one of the many Ryan Danctng Stud1os We vtstted MARY before leavrng for the States Upon reachtng San Franctsco we had a day to relax srghtseetng trrp we wnet 1nto many of the stores and to our surprrse 1n one shop we saw CAROL PETERSON It was an rntertor decoratlng shop owned and run by Carol We vtsrted wtth her for a short ttme and then returned to our hotel Next mormng we boarded our tram We arrrved tn las Vegas 1n the afternoon andwe had qurte a trme fmdrng a room We drd frnd a room tn the end though and srnce we had some trme on our hands we dectded to v1s1t the Golden Nugget were surprised to see MARIE RINKEN at one of the head tables We later found out she owned the place and and many other such places of tnterest From Las Vagas we left for Mexlco We sttll had some money left In Mexlco we found tt extremely hot and so dectded to buy a hat We each bought one and found the trademark bearxng the name CHERYL ASCHIM We then drove to New Orleans to relattves Whtle eatmg rn a restaurant we heard the famous Loute Arm strong band wlth HARLAN BA KKEN leadmg ll From New Orleanswe drove back to Iowa all ln all we had a ntce tr1p We were so busy vxsttmg our frrends thatwe forgot all about the weather Maybe next year we can do ll agam' Thts past summer Kay Sharon andl had the pleasure of betng chosen by the Nattonal Weather Statlon at Washtngton D C to take a trtp around the world to lnvestrgate the weather We were to fly to New York and satl from there to France We drove to Mmneapolts arrtvtng there tn the even mg Our plane left at 10 00 A M so to pass the even mg we attended a basketball game between the Mrnne apolls Lakers and the Boston Celt1cs We were more than surprtsed when the Lakers came onto the floor be cause their No 23 was none other than NORVIN ANDER SON formerly of Rldgeway The game was very close but the Lakers ftnally won rn the th1rd overttme by a score of 174 to 172 The w1nn1ng basket was made by our hero Norvtn who frntshed the game wtth a totalof 65 pornts the htghest score of the evenrng After the gamewe went to a restaurant for a mghtcap Thts we fully agreed should be a glass of milk The next mornmg we boarded our plane and after an hour s flrght landed at Chrcago where we had a stopover of three hours To amuse ourselves durlng thts time we went to the World s Farr After much walkmg around we went 1nto one of the tents to s1t down and rest our feet As we watched the drfferent acts ln the three rmgs we were greatly surprrsed to see an old alumnus DICKIE ARMSTRONG performrng the aston xshrng feat of bendlng tron ratls with htsbare hands After hrs performance we left the fa1r and returned to the arrport tn ttme to board our plane for Detrort We arrtved tn Detrort at 2 30 and as our plane for Washtngton dtd not leave unt1l8 00 we dectded to spend the trme tourlng the General Motors plant At the test rng area wewere astontshed to see the hrgh rate ofspeed at whrch the cars were drrven Then we had a chance drrver stepped out of the car because tt was none other than WAYNE HOVDEN He offered us a r1de and agatnst our better Judgment we agreed and clxmbed tn After a very thrllltng rrde ll agam was ttme to board the plane Severalhours later we arrrved tn Washmgton D C where we were lmmedtately taken to the Whlte House to meet the Presldent RICHARD LADWIG We were gtven our mstructlons and boarded our plane for New York We arrlved tn New York at 1 00 A M and tmmedl ately went to the Waldorf Astorta and checked lnto our rooms In the mornmg we found that our plane would not leave untll the next day That day we also went slghtseelng We vlsrted the Statue of Lrberty the Emptre State Butldlng and many other places of tnterest We also went shopplng at the varlous departments stores At Younkers whrle V1S1IlIlg the fur department we saw MA RIAM ALBERS modeltng mmks We dxdn t purchase anything because the prrce was more than we could af ford After our shoppmg spree we returned to the hotel to change 1nto evenrng clothes because we agam had been tnvtted out to dmner and a concert After dmner wewent to Carnegre Hall where the concert was to be held Therewere two ptamsts on the program Lrberace and TREVA SIME They played many enchantmg duets and also solo selecttons The one surprtsing thmg was that there weren t any candles After the performance we returned to our hotel and had a good mght s sleep ' . . September 3 1952 was that eventful day when twenty one freshmen sheeptshly trod the path to Rtdge way Hrgh School The second week of school Jerry Albertson left us and Clrfford Hepker Jotned us only to leave agarn tn the second semester The class of ftcers elected were Elame Harvey prestdent Martam Albers vtce presrdent Andy Benson secretary treas urer On Spetember 21 we were properlytnttlated bythe Jumors who chose to costume us as characters fromthe comtc sectton of the datly paper We ll all remember the mock weddtng of Elame and Cltfford the egg shampoo gtven to Cltfford by Jean and the scream heard from Sherry as she unknowtngly sat down onahot seat The flre exttngulsher prepared by Har lan and Wayne tn General Sclence w1ll be remembered as a fatlure Havtng completed our freshman year we returned as confrdent and wtde awake sophomores Elame Andy Edwrn and Edward left the gang to attend school tn Cresco The class offrcers elected were Norvrn Anderson Presrdent Harlan Bakken vrce prestdent CherylAschrm secretary lean Smrth treasurer Our class party rn which we played Ftve Hundred and vol ley ball will be remembered by all As we assembled together 1n September for our Jumor year tt was anttctpated by all Our class con ststed of stxteen as Elame Harvey and Sherry Duenow departed from us and Elame Phtpps and Marte R1nken Jorned uf from Cresco The elected class offlcers were: Treva Sxme prestdent Rlchard Ladwtg vrce pres1 dent Wayne Hovden secretary treasurer We re cetved the Honorable Iumor tttle and had the great pleasure of tmttatrng the freshmen A skatmg party was also sponsored rn the eventng We were eager to display our talents and dtd so by presenttng the play Meet Me In St Louts under the superv1s1on of Mrs Ingersoll We considered our play a tremendous suc cess eventhough we had a few backstage dxffrcultles We ll never forget Dick smrsrnterpretatton ofthe word dtsgusttng when he sald drgesung Our class rtngs came rn February and were very pleased wrth them Our Prom the htghltght of the school year was our responsrbtltty and as the occaston neared we spent many enjoyable hours preparmg for II Rtchard bemg very helpful cltmbed the ladder on the stage and when tt mystertously collapsed he fearmg nothtng grasped the curtatn and down they came Oh what a mess Wxth the assxstance of Mrs Cook we enter settmg at a banquet and prom A class p1cn1c was enjoyed by all even though we got caught in the ram The class welcomed Carol Peterson from Decorah as she Jotned our company at thxs tlme Many trips were to be taken th1s year and the f1rst was the an nual Journey to Mason Cxty where our prctures were taken This also proved to be a day of shopping for the gtrls As a supplementary a1d to Soclology class Mr Shrlney arranged for a trlp to Rochester Mtnne sota We llallremember Martam peering through the Jatl bars when the gulde shut the door on her Dtck set the pace tn car stylmg by painttng his reltc a des ert tan and Norvvayspruce Mrs Norland drrected our senior play entitled Our Hearts Were Young And Gay I C PENNEY COMPANY DROLLINGER S HARDWARE Clothtng Shoes for the famtly For all your hardware needs Decorah Iowa Cresco Iowa 741 ' .
