They Push For Better Playgrounds Volunteers Developing New Boll Pork By PAUL FOGLEMAN Work began today on I-I.ickory's newest .ball park. Volunteer effort played the ma- jor role. But since the park is identified as a Hickory program, this is not unique. As in the case of other recrea- tional projects bere where volun- teer effort has been involved, the new park is being prepared to of- fer recreation facilities where they arc most vitally needed. This park will serve the Ridge- view community and Recreation Director Walter tAceJ Parker pre- dicts it will see round-the-clock use. For the first time this year, a midget baseball league is being organized in the Ridgeview com- munity. lt 'will also be used for adult and teenage softball. Companies Help Out Pacing the grounds with city of- ficials today were E. E. Kerr of Kerr Sand company and Howard Propst of Hickory Sand company. Both have made generous contri butions with the use of grading equipment. A small rental fee for dozers is being paid by volunteer contributions, most from city offi- ci-als. The two and one-quarter acres which have been turned over for use of the park are ideally located between the Ridgeview Commun- ity Center and the School. The property is owned by the Hickory Foundation, an organiza- tion devoted to 'philanthropic ef- forts, who has given its blessings to the program of the Hickory Rec- reation commission. Joining hands in the development of the ball park is Midstate Con- tractors, Inc. who has assumed the responsibility of fine grading when all the grading and leveling is completed. City Helping Our Finishing touches will be done by the City of Hickory Public Works department which will re- moved debris nnd deliver the need- ed topsoil, it is understood. Others on the scene today to nod at workmen and machinery were Aldermen Hugh H. Abee, J. Paul Aiken and J. J. Robinson, City Manager C. L. Barnhardt and Pub- llc Works Superintendent C. Glenn Sigmon. Rough grading was expected to bg completed today and the cry 'Play ball more than likely will be heard on the park within the next week or so. Largely because of the efforts of these men, a new park is nearing completion ln the Ridge- view community of Hickory. Volunteer grading services were offered by E. E. Kerr of Keri' Sand company and Howard Propet of Hickory Sand Corn- pany, Inc., with finished grading to be completed by Mldstate Contractors, Inc. The site of the new facility is between the Com- munity Center and Ridgeview school. THANKS FOR THE HELP Much credit for the good relations between various groups of Hickory properly can be credited to such good will gestures as that displayed this week in the development of a new ball park in the Ridgeview area. Projects of this kind do not spring into full being without effort. They require organizing and plan ning-and a desire on the part of the sponsors for all to share in the good things of this nature. Aldermen J Paul Aiken, J. J. Robinson and Hugh H Abee have been prime movers in this as well as other similar undertakings which are based on the premise that it is both simpler and cheaper to provide play grounds by volunteer contributions, rath er than at taxpayers' expense Past efforts have provided this community with the West Hickory and Robinson Park ballgrounds and the Ridgeview community center and swimming pool In passing out credit for these ro- te, M Q Xi.. , , n - r Sw is if P jects it would be a mistake not to men tion officials of the Hickory grading companies who contribute generously to all such work. In the case of the new playground now being built, Kerr Sand Company, Hickory Sand Company, Inc , and Midstate Contractors, Inc , have given a hand, and made their heavy equipment and personnel available for doing the work. These firms have done the same many times in the past The Record, acting as spokesman for the Hickory public, says Thank you, to all who have helped with a Job well done for the good of the entire commun 1ty-particularly the residents of the 52 Ridgeview section at this time Ridgeview Area
