The Prom was attended by many of the Juniors and Seniors and many honored guests. Bus transportation was provided by the P.T.A. for students and adults who did not have private cars at their disposal. The theme for our Prom was Moonglow, and we choose Claire Callon and Robert Biroc, as King and Queen of the Prom. Carol Dispenser and Vinny De Mauro won the prize for the theme couple, Marge Canestrino and Tony Wright received the prize for the spotlight dance, and Barbara Jacobacci and Jerry Spooner won the dinner prize. After the Prom a breakfast was served to us at the Civic Center by the P.T.A. The Chaperons. K xl' .. ---- --..,... . . Trim i ' 'img uv- ' XX 25. A 1 ,' ,' fur? I . The Fresh- man year, as is always true, was hectic and full of excitement. The ear started off with our Freshman Dance. In quick succession came Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Then came exams, and our winter vacation. Easter, the Senior Class Play and the Messiah followed right upon the heels of exams. Our class officers included President, Paul Slakieg Vice-President, Barbara Frick, Secretary, Mary Car- den, and Treasurer, Walter Lessig. The Freshman basketball team, coached by Mr. Peck, won nine games and lost five. The Freshman Football Team, coached by Mr. Pia, had an outstanding season. Under captain Frank Bell, the team won four games, and tied one. None were lost. The cheerleaders, who pushed our teams to vic- tory, were Claire Callan, Margaret Duncan, Carol Hailfinger, and Evelyn Vozeh, Captain. ln our Sophomore year we felt quite grown up, as we watched the Freshmen struggle. Our main interest this year was our class rings. After much arguing, we selected our rings. The emblem of Park is set upon a stone, with the num- bers l959 engraved on the side. We all agreed that they were stunning. The round of holidays, Halloween through Easter, il I 1 'lt Beauty and elegance at the Junior-Senior Prom, left us breathless. At the May Queen Dance we saw our own Evelyn Vozeh and Judy Paronett as at- tendents. Our class President was Margaret Hammer, with Carol Hailfinger, Secretary, and Frank Bell, Treas- urer assisting her. We had some Sophomores on the Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading squads. A new principal, Mr. Weaver, helped us through this year. As Juniors, we were almost grown up. Our class President was Bob Huggard and he ably led us through an eventful year. Central High School musicians try out the recovered instruments in What a Life. 'F l In the Magazine Drive, we placed second, hav- ing only the Seniors above us. We vowed that next year, when we reached the honored posi- tion of Seniors, we would come out on top The Christmas, Valentine's and May Queen Dances were some of the chief social events of this year. By far the most spectacular social event of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held at the Hotel Roosevelt. The king and queen were Bobbie Biroc and Claire Callan. Moonglow was the theme, and the name was appropriate. After the the Prom we attended a breakfast at the Civic Center. As the school year closed, we eagerly looked forward to our final year. Senior! Now we spoke the word reverently. This year we looked down upon the little Freshmen, who were scurrying about looking for the esculators, getting lost, and exploring the mazes of our build- ing. Mr. Arbo, our new principal, started oli this year with us. Class spirit prevailed with everyone. Our class President, Frank Bell, encouraged us to achieve our goal in the Magazine Drive. We had a hundred per cent participation, with an average of 514.75 of sales per student. The annual Thanksgiving game upset Park. Over- confident, we expected to win, but the score was 31 to 20 in Bogota's favor. The most thrilling game of the season was at Westwood. We on by a score of 27 to 14. All in all, 1958 has to be con- sidered a good season for the Scarlets. We sold red and white hats to the students. They helped our treasury and made the grandstands look colorful at the games. The Senior Class Play, What A Life, directed by Emil Sanzari, gave everyone a hearty laugh, and the class treasury, a shot in the arm. I0 ng F .. l 'Ti 4 D-Ag 'ir' ' iz 1, . .I I 1 I . f The Prom's cutest couple demonstrate a dance step. Work on the Idler began early this year. Pic- tures were taken, the class voted for their favorites, Senior and club write-ups were finished and sent to the publishers. We were so busy with all these activities that the end of the year came too fast. After a very delightful class trip, to make us forget the horrors of Exam Week, we were ready for the final act on our school stage. As we receive our diplomas, we face the future eagerly, but with a felling of regret that our years here are finished. Fabulous pep rally for the Westwood game. t ,,, . V .. . I R ,' -. g -I' . One of fhe hardesf working paris of ihe Music Department is fhe Band. The Color Guard leads off in all the parades. R' RH EA RICHTER Drum Maioreffe Meiodiers The picked voices of fha Melo diers have made R.P. famous Q. The Music Department plays an important part in the activities of the High School. The Band, Twirlers and Color Guard all add color to the football games. The Band, under the direction of Mr. Austin, plays during half time. The Twirlers, a group of high-stepping, energetic girls, present their original formations. The Color Guard leads the Band and the Twirlers, and also takes part in the formations. All these groups practice every day to reach perfection. The Band also plays at assemblies and other Music Department activities. The two groups which just entertain us by singing are the Melodiers and the Chorus. Under the direction of Mr. Allan, the Chorus performs on various occasions. Their more important programs are The Christmas Vespers and the Spring Concert. The Melodiers are one of the best known groups in the High School. It is made up of thirty of our best singers. Under the direction of Mr. Allan, they perform at assemblies, concerts, and out- side affairs. MUSIC MR. ROBERT AUSTIN Music Director Twirlers A colorful and talented QYOUP are the Twirlers. When singing is needed, the Chorus is on the job. SERVICE CLUBS The Service Clubs lend service not only to the school but also to the community. The Hi-Y and the Tri-Hi-Y are two such clubs. They are associated with the Y.M.C.A. The object of these clubs is to create, and maintain and extend throughout home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character. There are also several clubs which serve only the school. The Art Service League is of great value. This club makes the scenery for our plays and concerts, creates posters for all the dances, games, and other school affairs and has charge of Bulletin Boards. The Li- brary Club is greatly appreciated by Miss Roedel, our librarian, and all of the students who use the school library. The entire student body benefits from the work of the Assembly Planning Board. This group spends many hours thinking up original programs which we all en- poy. The Tech Crew is of assistance to the teachers and the Assembly Planning Board. They are in charge of records for noon-time dancing, proiectors, and microphones for the assembly programs, and visual aids in the class rooms, The third section of the service clubs is the recognition clubs. The Lettermen's Club is composed of all varsity lettermen. lt issues sweat- ers for all lettermen each year and raises the necessary funds by run- ning dances. The members of the National Honor Society are the intellectual leaders of our school. They are ad- vanced not only in scholastic ability but also in character, leadership, and service. One of their most valuable services is to run the Lost and Found department, the mem- bers also serve as tutors for stu- dents who need help in their class work. THE ART SERVICE LEAGUE is fam- ous for its Christmas decorations. THE ASSEMBLY PLANNING BOARD both amuses and teaches us. EYKT' S RF L. The Commercial Club provides a preliminary view of the business world. It aids the com- mercial students of today to become the secre- taries of tomorrow. The clubs of our Future Teachers and Future Nurses have the responsibility of introducing the students to the fields of teaching and nursing. The work ot the professions is clearly illustrated by films, discussions, and speakers. Three important aims of every student of French and Spanish are to have an understand- ing of the language, a knowledge of its gram- mar, and an appreciation of the culture of the countries. The ses- sions of both these clubs aim to further these endeavors. To familiarize the students of to- day with the progress and new developments of tomorrow is the specific endeavor of the History Club. To build scientists for the future by furthering interests in, and knowledge of physics, biology and chemistry, is the sole purpose of the Chemistry, Physics and Biology clubs. interesting experiments are performed at the meetings. XX, f . ff FOOTBALL Our Scarlet football team had a fine 6-3 record in 1958, their first season in the Bergen County Scholastic League. Coach Bill Peck's squad reached their peak on November 22, when they defeated Westwood 14-7, in a hard-fought game. The team, in this game especially, displayed a great deal of teamwork and cooperation with our coaching staff. In the other big victory of the year we beat Dumont, 14-6, the first time the Scarlets had defeated Dumont in the seven year history of the series. The Scarlets biggest win of the campaign was a 44-O rout of Weehawken. All in all, the students of Ridgefield Park High School can be very proud of our smoothly operating football team. Coach Frank Bell's basketball squad compiled an overall record of 8-12, which is a vast improvement over last season. This year the Scarlets competed in the Bergen County Scholastic League, and finished fifth, against schools their own size. Our most pleasing victory was over Bogota, 65- 61, in a game filled with excitement. The Scarlets biggest win came over Franklin, 69 to 48 in the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament in the opening round. Mr. Bell was very pleased with his team's performance in this contest. In our final game of the tournament we dropped a 61-52 heartbreaker to a highly favored Westwood team Big things ma be ex ected of next ear's - Y P Y squad, as Bell loses only three boys, Frank Bell, Jr., Mickey Feather, and Richie Gyuro. . The Girls' Athletic Association, under the advisorship of Miss Eliza- beth Trivisonno, conducts an extensive extra-curricular sports program for girls. Intramural sports include kickball, volleyball, basketball and soft- ball. Teams, made up of class members, compete with teams from other classes in tournaments which otter a letter to members of the winning team, Girls participating in after-school games accumulate points. At the end ofthe year high-point winners are eligible for membership in the Girls' Athletic Council. The Girls' Athletic Council plans the program and conducts money raising proiects to pay for G.A.A. letters given in June. Red and White shakers, sold before games, and the G.A.C. Sockhop are two money raising proiects undertaken by the Council. The G.A.C. also sponsors the annual May Queen Dance. At this dance the Queen, elected with her attendants through homerooms, is crowned. The G.A.C. is a member of the Bergen County Girls' Sports Coun- cil, which meets once a month in difterent schools.
