The Scarlets, hindered by graduation, ineligibilities and injuries, were determined to better last season's dismal record of six losses and three ties. The scrappy Scarlets played host to Dumont on opening day, only to be set back 23-0 by the visiting Huskies. Park, working out of a quick opening T formation, received a 25-12 loss at the hands of Cliffside Park on the Raider's home ground. Although lacking size and experience, a hard-fighting Park eleven fought Rutherford to a 6-6 deadlock on the following Saturday. Then the Scarlets received six straight losses on succeeding Saturdays, the first to be administered by the powerful Englewood Maroons, with a final score of 46-0. Next Park fell before the hands of the N.N.J.I.L. co-champs, Tenafly, with a 28-6 drubbing. The Scarlets played host to our neighbors to the North next, and received a 19-6 loss from the Highwaymen of Teaneck. The next two games were black ones for the Park fans, as they saw their determined squad overpowered by Leonia and Hackensack in that order. Ridgefield Park traveled to Bogota for the traditional Thanksgiving Game. The ,Iochermen faced one of the most powerful Bogota Elevens ever to wear the purple and gold. A smaller and lighter, but not outfought Park team, fell before the Bucs by a 32-6 count, ending an unsuccessful football season, whose only highlight was the determination and fight of the boys who wore the red and white perseys of Ridgefield Park. 62 MICKEY DUNCAN Captain Football Coach Arthur Jocher drilling John Oakley in the technique of passing. Basketball VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM The 1954-55 basketball season began with the Scarlets pulling out a 45-42 decision over Bogota late in the fourth quarter. With the Park Five playing such impressive ball, the Park rootcrs looked for- ward to a successful season. Hopes were dimmed on the next outing with Park falling before Lodi by a 59-47 count. After losing its first two N.N.,I.I.L. league games to Tenafly and Teaneck, Park broke its losing streak by copping the next two games over Leonia and Rutherford. The scrappy Scarlets then lost the next four games at the hands of Hackensack, Cliffside Park, the N.N.,I.I.L. defending champs, Englewood, and Bogota. Appearing to be on the up-grade. the Bellmen triumphed in their next three outings over Teaneck, Tenafly, and Leonia to begin the second round of the N.N.J.I.L. slate. The Bull- dogs of Rutherford broke the streak by knocking off Park 61-59 in an overtime, sudden-death game. A disappointed Scarlet Five dropped its last three N.N.J.I.L. tilts, bettering last seasonis efforts by one win, as Park ended its 1954-55 season with a 7-12 record. M Q 1 . E ldli, . Hindered by the graduation of his veteran hurlers, Coach Arnold scouted for someone to take over the mound chores. With a host of returning letter- men, the Scarlet Nine's chances of becoming a N.N.J.1.L. power hinged on the mound. Another deficit was hitting. With the loss of the mainstays of the batting order, Park needed someone to take over the chore of swinging the big club. The '55 season promised to be a tough one for the Park Nine as the Scarlets had to play heads-up ball to keep from being stepping stones for the other N.N.,I.I.L. diamond powers. 66 BASEBALL TEAM April May 6 9 13 16 18 20 23 27 30 4 7 9 11 14 17 20 BASEBALL SCHEDULE Leonia Rutherford Teaneck Tenafly Bogota Hackensack Englewood Cliffside Park Leonia Rutherford Teaneck Bogota Tenafly Hackensack Englewood Cliffside Park Away Away Away Home Home Home Away Home Home Home Home Away Away Away Home Away VARSITY TRACK TEAM Track and ross Countr TRACK SCHEDULE April 15 Hasbrouck Heights Home 22 Westwoocl Away 28 Ridgefield Park Leonia Tenafly Tenafly 30 Penn. Park fans may look forward to winning seasons in the near future if this year's J. V. picture is any indication. With a combination of fight and a will to win, Park's J. V. gridders met a tough schedule of Bergen County Junior Varsity powers. The Park eleven opened its season with successive wins over Dumont, Cliffside Park, and Rutherford. Although not finding the remaining part of the schedule as easy, the young Scarlets put in good performances against stern competition. We can look forward to seeing many of the J. V. on next year's varsity roster. Although the Basketball team only managed to turn in a 4 win, 7 loss record, the young Parkites showed the spark which could set Ridgefield Park back as an N.N.J.I.L. basketball power. With a year of J. V. experience plus a limited amount of varsity action, we may expect to see the fellows step us from tl1e J. V. ranks to fill the vacancies, on next year's varsity Five. 'We hope the baseball Nine will compile as fine a record as the other J. V. teams have done in representing Ridgefield Park.
