A ee' i fx lust before we arrived HITCRY On a warm September day in 1946, approximately one hundred twenty bewildered boys and girls entered the halls of R. P. H. S,. and this time it was as students, and not just spectators. We all thought that the school was so big. and that we would never learn where all the rooms were. There were so,many strange faces: but soon we began to recognize some as football players, cheerleaders, hall patrol members, or other celebrities. Then, alter a while, we began to get settled in our new surroundings and thought of everyone as being so friend- ly. One of the most outstanding and best remembered parts of our freshman year was the wonderful freshman team we had. Yes, our freshman basketball team coppeci second place honors. including a trophy and silver basket- balls. in the Bergen County Iunior High School Tourna- ment. Many of these same freshman stars continued playing rhrough all four seasons. Another big event for many freshman fellows and girls of the class was the Freshman Formal, attended by a large number of fresh- men and sophomores. appropiately dressed for the occa- sion - their first formal dance. ln our sophomore year, we all felt quite superior be- cause we had a whole class of freshman below us, and we really felt as if we were able to give our own opinions about things instead of meekly going along with every- one else, We had two successful dances. The Farmer's Frolic ---a barn dance, and the Valentine Dance, which helped contribute to the funds we knew we would have to raise in our junior year. At the end of our second year at R. P. H. S. we ordered our class rings, finally deciding on the New Look design. We were to receive the rings in the beginning of our junior year. The third year in high school began with our trying to become used to being called Upperclassmen. Of course, it wasn't such a hard job: in fact, we seemed to take to it right away, We began to work right away to raise money to be used for the Prom we were to give for the seniors. We undertook many activities such as the sellxng of sunshrne cards notepaper and wrappings We had a few dances and a combmatxon card party and cake sale Then we began workmg earnestly on our Prom plans There was a mrx up rn the matter of h1r1ng the Elk s Club for the mght whxch we wanted so we were forced to arrange for the Bxg Dance to be held 1n the Boys Gym Not many people approved of the rdea but the transformatxon of the gym 1nto a Moonltght Crurse on the S S 49 removed all ob1ectxons Everyone agreed that the gym had never before looked so elaborate We members of the yunxor class worked very hard on the affarr and for weeks ahead of the date were busy makmg streamers sea horses stars lrle preservers and many other thmgs to complete the prcture We were rewarded for our work by the senrors who all agreed that our Prom was a success and that everyone who attended enjoyed hrmself Before we knew xt September 1949 and our last year of hrgh school had arrxved We were all determmed get the most out of our semor year We attended all of he pep rallxes football games and Frxday mght dances We were all so happy when the football team broke a two season losrng streak by beatmg Clrffsxde Park There was qurte a celebratron that mght too as everyone was so grateful to the team for brmgrng the vrctory home to us Our Idler staff began work on the yearbook and soon plctures were taken Most of us were pleased wxth them and some ot us even gave them away for Chrrstmas pre sents At the annual Wm Or Lose Dxnner Rxchre Thomp son was awarded the coveted Blggs Trophy for bemg the outstandmg athlete scholar of the year The end of 1949 was approachmg and before we knew xt we were wtshmg everyone a Merry Chnstmas and Happy New Year and then the mxd term exams were upon us A large number of senrors depended upon the good Q75 results of these exams to help get them rnto varxous colleges Then our outstandmg basketball team had t very brlllxant season wrth a league record of 12 wrns agamst 2 defeats and a complete record of 14 wms and 3 losses It held a tre for flrst place m the N N I I L wrth Hackensack and then entered the tournament only to be defeated rn the second round rn a heartbreakxng overtrme game by a score of 4l 43 Our boys certamly de served the support of everyone and the townspeople showed thetr apprecxatxon by grvmg a dmner rn honor of the team Thxs affaxr was held rn the newly dedxcated On March 17 and 18 the semor class presented the annual class play Thxs year s presentatron Boy Wanted was a howlmg success and we all know that all of the people connected wrth the play worked very drlxgently on xt to make rt the success that rt was In Aprrl Easter arrived wrth RPHS havmg rts own Easter Parade the grrls and boys lookxng therr very best m therr new outfxts At the end of the month our sprxng vacatron had arrrved and we all realxzed that xt was our last vacatron m hxgh school Wtth the warm weather came such thmgs as pxcnrcs wxeme roasts hay rrdes brke hrkes and 1ust loafmg Baseball and track seasons began and our boys were out there trymg to break the old behef that R P H S could not have a good season rn those two sports By the trme May had begun thmgs began to happen very quxckly We reahzed that m less than two months we would be out of school and mto the cold cruel world The Prom was attended by many of us and we all vowed that we would never forget the wonderful txme we had Shortly after the begxnnmg of Iune we took our rmal exams Semor Day found us elated over our good fortune to have a special day off all to ourselves Then we all felt very solemn at the Baccalaureate Servrces because rt was then we knew that Graduatxon was near Gradua tron whrch not only meant walkmg across the stage m a cap and gown to recerve a pxece of paper but rt also meant saymg good bye to all of the good and not so good txmes we had had It marked the end of one of the most rmportant stages rn our lrves In that short time on the stage we had to rellve four full years of fun whmch could never agam be expenenced Some of us semed to feel happy but I thmk that down deep msxde we all felt quxte sad to leave dear old H P H S our freshman cheerleaders At Ihe prom I Z.-f Rrchard Thompson wma the Bxggo Trophy 39 . 1 Q ' O - ' U . . Shield, who in turn relays the suggestions to the Board of Education, This organization an- nually gives a Christmas party for the entire student body on the afternoon prior to Christmas vacation and supervises the Arbor Day celebrations. The Homeroom Representatives of HP. H.S. have an important job also, for it is their duty to attend all S.A.B. meetings and report the results back to their respec- tive homerooms. The Hall Patrol is one of the largest and most effective organizations in the school. Members elected from each of the four classes, with a captain elected for each floor, are responsible for keeping order in the corridors. They are obliged to be on duty at 8:15 each morning and at l2:45 each afternoon, to hold doors and to stop running and disorderly conduct in the halls. To enforce the rules of the hall patrol the Student Court was established. Presid- ing over this court are William Baier, Chief Iustice, and Iudges Ioan Kirchhoff, William Kinkead, Nancy Meyertons and Kenneth Godstrey. During class periods the Service League, under the leadership of William Porr and its advisor Miss Mac Lallen, is held responsible for all misdemeanor in the locker rooms and corridors. 47 The Home Room Representatives 5 The judges talk it over CONSTANCE CAMPBELL Clerk of Court ADRIENNE KRATZ Clerk of Com Enter the defende nt , 'T Twirlers -the glamour part of the Band The Baby Cheerleaders lyn Seeback, Susan Ludewig, Dorothea Von Hagn and Ruby West. Basketball, volleyball and ping-pong are just a few of the sports that come under their juris- diction. An important factor in running assembly programs is Mr. Arnold's Technical Crew. These boys take care of motion pictures, lights and the amplifying system. They also have charge of the educational movies shown for various classes. The Hi-Y and the Tri-Hi-Y, for boys and girls respectively, are this school's branches of the They run the cloakroom for all dances, and do many worthwhile outside projects. The advisors are Miss Brock fTri-Hi-YD and Mr. Wal- lace CHi-YJ. Membership in the Honor Society is the high- est honor the school can bestow upon a student. The group has its own room and members may use it for study halls. The hand- books for incoming Freshmen are prepared by this organization whose advisor is Miss Stimmel. Each club has its own student officers and faculty advisor and representation in the Student Advisory Board. They meet alternate activity periods, alter school, or at lunch time, so that a student may partici- pate in more than one activity. ln the language department we have the French Club and the Spanish Club under the capable direction of Mrs. Strahlendorff. The Scarlet Starlets is a dramatic club for freshmen and sophomores: Miss Townsend is the advisor. The Outdoorsmen's Club is a source of pleasure for our rugged sports- men. The freshmen have their own History Club, For the music lovers, the Music Club is an active factor in enioyment and appreciation of harmony and rhythm as well as social life. Mr. Arnold's Chemistry Club always has fun deciding what to blow up next. For the business students there is the Commercial Club and the Advanced Steno Club. F' Nl An CLASS CF 1951 This year's Little Upperclassu struggled with the same problem that has preyed on the minds of all the junior classes, that of money- making. They began their schemes with such suc- cessful dances as The Gay Nineties Promen- ade, Hol1y Hop, and St. Patty's lig. Sell- ing soda at the P.T.A. Barn Dance and the Gay Nineties Dance, along with selling pickles and carrots at the basketball games helped to raise money for the lunior-Senior Prom. The Prom held in the Boys Gymnasium on May 27 was a huge success. Kenneth God- strey was Chairman of the Prom Committee. CLASS OF 1952 The Sophomore Class began its second year of high school feeling quite familiar with its surroundings, and perhaps just a bit superior to the incoming Freshmen, whose shoes they had filled such a long, long time ago. The first event of importance was the elec- tion of Sophomore Class officers. Frank Going was elected to his second year as President, with the Vice-Presidency going to loan Millar. Secretarial position went to Patricia Butler, and the financial wizard was Ralph Ernst. Under the leadership of its newly elected officers and its advisor, Miss Williams, the Sophomore Class presented the successful Thanksgiving Day Assembly Program. Selec- tion of class rings was an important occasion, and the Sophmores are now eagerly awaiting the delivery of their rings. The Sophomore Class looks forward with en- thusiasm to its junior year and the many new activities that it will bring. 55 mm -15 CLASS GF 1953 This year's Freshman Class certainly has proved to be an active group which shows much promise for the future. Hardly had they entered Ridgefield Park High School and be- come accustomed to their new surroundings, that they elected their class officers. All-import ant position of President was won by Leroy Henrich, with Florence Farquharson claiming the Vice-Presidency. Also taking positions were Sybil Komninos as Secretary and Iohn Oeller- man as Treasurer. Much credit is due to the freshman cheer- leaders who so ably supported their own fresh- man team and the I.V. team at all the games. Miss Marion Chadwick was advisor for the class of 1953. 56 00 vv lfif FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS LeRoy Henrich Cseatedj Sibyl Komninos, Florence Far quharson, Iohn Oellerman. It had a League record of l2 wins and 2 losses, and a total record of 14 wins and 3 losses. Under the expert direction of Coach Frank Bell, the team wound up in a tie for first place in the N. N. l. l. L. Since Park was the co-champion, the Win-Or-Lose Committee honored them at a dinner in the Civic Center, when they were awarded jackets. Two of the members of the team. .lames Gleckner and Richard Thompson, were given all N. N. l. I. L. first team honors, Iames Elvin second team honors, and Arthur Lesemann and Carl Frei honorable mention. The season opened with the annual game against Bogota. which we won, In fact each team in the League was beaten by the Park quintet in the first round of play. As the second round began, we were beaten by Hackensack in a close thriller by the score of 47-44. That was when the fight really began. When we played Teaneck the second time, we were beaten by another close score of 39-36. Lady Luck must have been with us that day, bcause Hackensack fell to Cliffside Park, keeping the two teams deadlocked. We both went on to victories in the rest of the games, to end the season, with the same number of games won and lost. Then the tournament began at Paterson Armory. Our first game was against Boonton, a school which had a brilliant record. However, it was certainly proven which team was the better: Park won, 70-38, in a game in which the whole team, including the I-Vees, got a chance to play. The winner of that game was scheduled to meet Hackensack on the lol- lowing Saturday at the same place. The game was really a close one. ln fact, no one was sure of the outcome until the sound of the gun at the end of an overtime period. The score was definitely proof of the hard fight the boys put up, even though the game was lost, we can never give our boys too much credit. Each year about 200 girls participate in the activities sponsored by the G. A. A. One of the most important parts of the G. A. A. is the Leaders' Club. This organization is solely for the girls and they themselves take charge of the meetings. The girls plan all tournaments, play days, special meetings and programs that are connected with girls' athletics. Since the organization is largely made up ol juniors and seniors, the Class of '50 was not very active in Leaders' Club until last year, when lean D'Alusio was Vice-President, loan Kirchhoff was Secretary, and Kitty Kane was Vice-President to the Bergen County Girls' Athletic Council. Now in their senior year, with greater responsibility, we have lean D'Alusio as President, Ioan Kirchhoff as Secretary, and Kitty Kane as Delegate to the Bergen County G. A. C. The Girl's Athletic Association has at least two big activities to under- take each year, one being a playday. We usually give our playday during basketball season, as most of the girls are mainly interested in this sport. During our tour years we have played basketball with Teaneck, Leonia, Hackensack, and Bogota. These schools in turn have invited us for volleyball, softball, basketball and bowling. Let's start reminiscing a little. As freshman we were beginners in sports with such teams as Easy Punchers, Bloomer Girls, Blue Streaks, Bobby Soccers, Parkettes, Sure Hitters, Popsicles, Sloppy Ioe's, Amazons and Scarlet Shooters. Our sophomore year saw the birth of the Catawows, class basketball champs and school champs in volleyball. Among their victims were the Cork Screws, Pretzels, Scarlet Punchers and the Golden Pigs. With junior year approaching, larger competition appeared as the girls were all out to better themselves by trying to beat the Catawows. That was the year the Golden Pigs were soccer champs and the Suckers and Volleypops, were added to those who iell before the Catawows. As seniors we were at the top again. lt's Catawows once more at the top of the league in soccer, and hoping to win the titles in basketball, volley- ball, and softball. Of course, the Thumbtacks, Windettes, and the Powder Puffs do not agree: but we're all set for some good games. Under the abie assistance of our Physical Education teacher, Miss Dema- rest, we have come far in sportsmanship, leadership, and have received training in those qualities that make girls get along together. We have en- joyed our membership in the G.A.A. during our four years in R.P.H.S. and we hope that future classes will have as much fun and friendship with Miss Demarest as we, the Seniors, have had.
