' i 4 I I , - - II ' ' ll I I I 5 ' Zl of H , r, it I lo l6 ' l l8 ' ff 43 Io ' iw T SEEMS like only yesterday that we entered the halls of l-l S for the first ti e Eager excited, and a little confused we hunted for the escalator just around the cor- ner tried to fight our way down the up stairs, and escaped traffic tickets only through the mercy of the Senior Hall Patrol members. The class went to football games and worshipped the Senior boys who were pushing the Scarlets right up to the top. The Freshmen Cheerleaders were picked and basketball season began, we thought that no Freshmen team would ever compare with ours. Mid-term exams found us scared stiff, but we managed to survive, and finished out the rest of '46 with a little more confidence. Back to school in September, and then it was our turn to initiate the Freshmen. The new Sophs all felt very superior and wise until we came up against Silas Marner. Class officers were elected and plans made for a gala Sophomore dance. We discovered that there were other languages beside English, and the halls echoed with our classmates proudly greeting each other with Buenos dias and Bonjour. At last, the eagerly awaited Junior year arrived. We were swamped with pickles, carrots, movies, and dances, and made plans for the best prom ever held. The S. A. B. was rocked with pitched battles between the two upper classes as they scram- bled for dance dates. May drew near as the hush-hush meetings in Mr. Locatelli's room grew more frequent, and the final deci- sions were made. Prom night finally arrived, and we found the Elks club transformed into a south-sea paradise, filled with lovely girls in their swishing formals, and our handsome tuxedo- ed gentlemen. R. P, was certainly quiet all day Sunday, while our night owls dreamed peacefully about that never-to-be-fob gotten experience. And then it was September again and our last year in the dear old school had begun. The newly elected ldler staff began their continuous tussel with the dollar sign and the Freshmen Reception Dance officially started the school year. A recent ruling prevented the over-energetic Seniors from holding too many offices but from the looks of the activity schedule it wasn't too effective. Since this was our last year we tried hard not to miss any football games but yelled ourselves hoarse in an incessant attempt to coax a win in a dark football season. Those regular Friday night pep rallies were helping our financial status and our candy salesmen didn't do badly either. We discovered that the Senior year is not the milk and honey ex- istence that we imagined, as many of our classmates were suf- fering acute indigestion from trying to do homework assign- ments at lunch hour and make S. A. B. meetings at the same time. Popular opinion in our Senior history classes gave Tom Dewey the election, but he lost anyway. Miss Gray went into deep mourning. -Shii- The football team and Mrs Strahlendorff battled over the problem of activity periods Guess who won? The French Club will remain in existence As Christmas approached the entire class was going around in a daze There seemed to be so much to do and so little time in which to accomplish it Everywhere we turned a photographer popped up to snap pictures for our yearbook In the midst of saving for those special presents, the Seniors had to scrape up money for our Idler pictures. We tried to beat our enemy homeroom in Christmas decorations, go to club parties, and get to work on time. Our language teachers had a holiday and taught Silent Nightl' in different languages. Finally it was no more school for two weeks, so we slept until one o'clock every day and didn't even open those books we brought home with us. The Senior class play try-outs highlighted January, and there were some tears spilled, both for happiness and disap- pointment. Seventeen parts to be chosen from seventy-five interested Seniors didn't mean a large percentage of satisfied prospects. Play practice twice a week, and sometimes three times from then on until that fateful March ll. We hoped that January exams would be the last ones we would take in R. P,, for talk was buzzing around that Seniors might be excused from finals in June. The Juniors were having the same troubles about money that we had last year, but the Seniors had troubles too. The Idler deadline arrived, Hal lt also passed and frantic activity was still going on, Two days of worry, indigestion, and complete shattered nerves and the Senior Class play was a thing of the past. Our afternoons seemed awfully empty for weeks. Before we realized it, baseball season was well under way, and the girls were wearing cotton dresses and no socks. Grad- uation was iust about here and we began practicing walking down that long aisle. Baccalaureate came, and only a few days later we walked off that so familiar stage clutching a stiff piece of paper in shaky hands, The paper said diploma but it really meant good-bye. Good-bye to our high school -we grumbled about rules, teachers, and homework, but we loved it, every minute of it. Good-bye to all the fun we had -the noise in homeroom, the crowded lockers, the Wednesday assemblies, and the six weeks tests, the Christmas parties, the club meetings, the homework, and the pep rallies. But it's not really good-bye, because, R. P. H. S., no matter where we are, or what we do, there's one thing that's sure-we'll never for- get you. ls it Jane-or the picture? The pictures and write-ups will give us some- thing more tangible than memories with which to recall our school days. It was a great privilege to serve on the ldler Staff, and have something to do with the work and planning that make the book possible. The best part of the job, however, was being able to work with our advisor Miss Primiceri. She always had a joke for our low moods and encouragement for our bad days. Without her the ldler would not even exist, and the debt of gratitude we owe her is more thain we can repay with a few words. To us, the ldler was a perfect way in which to express our feelings towards Ridgefield Park High School, and every page that was completed meant saying thank you to a certain part of R. P. When Pat persuades the family to take in tourists, the plot becomes in- volved with escaped criminals, a mysterious inventor and his ray machine, poison, and some amusing love trouble, The unexpected climax comes when Manie Beggs, the cook, house- keeper, and amateur detective of the group, comes down with a beautiful case of measles while the guests live on creamed onions and strawberries for two days: and when the family finds some old newspaper clippings concerning their guests. The play, which was casted to perfection was superbly done. Mr. James Walsh Park s cinder mentor had at his disposal very little material with which to work at the beginning of the season. However as competition got under way many of his boys shaped up into future track stars. Captain Pat Lamb Rich Thompson and Roy Colin were the mainstays of the squad. This is the main reason why Ridgefield Park High School produces such great teams. The success of this year's basketball team can be 'W summed up in four words: love for the game. The starting squad, consisting of four Juniors, got off to a bad start, by dropping their first tilt of the season to a power- ful Bogota five. T An enlightening characteristic of the '49 team was that -5-aff' they worked well as a unit, and a team with teamwork is a tough one to beat, The Scarlet cagers were fortunate to have this year, Frank Bell, one of the best basketball coaches in the history of the school, to guide them. A win at Bogota on September 26 l948 might have made a great deal of difference in the outcome of the season. The players on the squad did not ask any quarter nor did they give any quarter. They kept plodding right along, and at each game their spirit reached a higher pitch. The Scarlets had two great coaches in Harry Hammond and Jim Walsh, and a superb player captain, Frank Levis.
