Presenting The Forty-Seventh Omlue Of I I Ridgefield High School 1967 I I Q' ,X Y ...mu -'V X9 xl sz , + ' 'I Wx 0, 1 - I 1 I Xxx N xxx N, ' I am- EN I f f l I -'CW ASSOCIATE EDITOR ELOISE THORNBERRY F oreword This year was basically the same as any high school year: we studied- had fun, experienced sad moments of trial and error. School friendships began, flourished, and sometimes died. There were games and dancesg slumber parties and picnicsg voices were hoarse from Spuddette rooting and singing. There were moments of glory for some of us in sports, music and drama. All shared the hopeless reality of examinations and deadlines, the semester gradesg the noontime rush. These impressions are only a few that were packed into this full year. Credit for the production of this book goes to the Oralue Staff. The Staff, however, has furnished only the outlines of the story that we find when we turn these pages filled with warm smiles of friendship and many happy recollections. The rest is up to the individual. Underclassmen who return to RHS in the fall will continue to keep up the high standards of the school and strive for even greater improvement. Graduates will go their separate ways using the knowledge and experience gained here to reach their successes. It is not today that we will appreciate the ORALUE. Tomorrow, when it is not so easy to think back on l967, we will treasure the memories this book has stored for us. o 3 E 5 Laliene Wray a,,a::1,f M sin. It A was Dedication It is a very difficult task to put into words our feelings toward our secretary. She is always willing to be a friend and help us Whenever we need it. We realized more than ever before how much she means to us when she worked at the grade school for a short time this year. As an expression of our appreciation, We Wish to dedicate the 1967 Oralue to Mrs. LaRene Wray. In order that other students may benefit from her friendship, We hope Mrs. Wray will be a part of Ridgefield High School for many years to come. 5 NOVEMBER 1 Instrumental Concert 4 End of First Quarter 10 Senior Class Play 11 Veterans Day - Holiday 17 Parent-Teacher Conferences Open House 22 Father-Daughter Dinner 24-25 Thanksgiving Vacation i fri: 5 A ' , V A ,af A JANUARY 12 Drama Class Production Sealowitz Conference 13 G.A.A. It must also aid you in the development of ,S your personal philosophy - which is a de- ll termination of where you are going and how you are going to get there. We sincerely hope, therefore, that you will permit us to assist you in determining your personal, as Well as your vocational objectives. We believe that you all should and can be contributing members of our society. William A. Greene, Superintendent School Board members this year include: Walter Claiborne Ray Ellis Roy Garrison, jr. Donald Kemper Roger Stine William Greene, Superintendent Donna jones, Clerk School Board Donna jones, District Clerk 1 2 Prineipafs Message The great Writer Carlyle Wrote, Happiness is a fractiong the numerator is What you have, the denominator is what you want. Rich people aren't always happy, for they almost always Want more than they have. Many people are smart enough not to Want what they can't have. It is surprising how happy they are. Of course they are ambitious and energetic and Want things they can have and enjoy getting them. The big idea is to have a purpose for your life that includes such important things as: Learning to be of real service in the worldg Working for those things that help people be their bestg Building for yourself security, so that you not only will be able to take care of yourself, but will also be able to help others. If you will work toward your purpose with all the resources you have and not Worry about things you can't have, you are likely to be a very happy person--the kind of a person people like to be around. Congratulations to the Oralue staff for their dedicated efforts toward the publication of this history-in-pictures and, to the graduating class members, We add our sincere wishes for successful future accomplishments. Message F rom The Coach Thirty-two boys started the season in September with a jamboree at Washougal. When the dust had settled and the points were counted, Ridgefield had placed second, winning one and losing one. The regular season was marked with a lot of hard work, moments of triumph and despair. Although not blessed with a great win-loss record, the Spudder fans were treated to eight hard fought games with many not being decided until the last few seconds of the game. The high point of the season was a trip to Sherwood, Oregon and a 26-13 victory over the Bowmen. Coachas M essage The task of writing a run-down on the past season's basketball team is often an easy and enjoyable one. However, such is not the case this year. A season record of two wins and fourteen losses makes it a difficult task. One doesn't enjoy writing about unpleasant experiences and this has certainly been one for everyone involved--players coaches, cheerleaders, fans, etc. Nobody likes to lose. It would be easy to make excuses, to rationalize, we were small, inexperienced, hurtby injuries to key players, etc. But nothing erases the fact that it was a poor sea- son and the less said about it the better. Were it not for the injuries to jack Anderson and Dan Smith-and the illness of jeff Banks--all experienced men--the season's record might have been different. Nothing takes the place of varsity experience. The prospects for next year are brighter. We will have experienced regulars to build the team around. Now, if cach of the players will grow about four inches during the summer. . . 3, ffffw Basketball Battle for control. The early season record didn't look very promising as the Spudders lost two of their first three league matches. However, the desire to excel was never lost and the spudders came back to defeat both teams they had lost to earlier in the season. The final team record was 6-2 and the tie for the Trico League Championship. After the regular season the wrestlers brought more honor to Ridge- field by placing second in the Sub- district tournament and third in the district tournament just one point away from second. The tournament record was even impressive in that Ridgefield was in competition with eleven AA schools. H.S. girls' tennis team. We were determined and presented a challenge back. Of a total of 4 U2 Varsity matches, We had an even Win-loss record. At sub-district, Paula and Mary Ann won their first singles' rounds, as did Gail and Shirley in doubles, but lost their second matches and were eliminated at that point. The second doubles' team did not place. Spirit and enthusiasm were high all season, showing the mainstay for one of the tennis team's best years. Coach 'S Message This was the first year for golf as an interscholastic sport at Ridgefield High School. Golf is a team sport with players on the team and in competition. They play a round of golf and add up the total score for all five players on each team. The team With the lowest total score Wins the match and the golfer who has the lowest individ ual score is called the medalist , Most matches are played with three or four teams participating. In our eight matches this season, We were able to place lst once se cond four times, and third three times. Also, Ron Penfield, who was our number one golfer with a 47. l average, Won medalist honors in three of the eight matches W feel that this was an excellent showing for a first year team. Class Of,70 The freshman class, with the help of their advisors, Mr. Gustafson and Mr. jacobus, worked hard to make their first year in high school a success . The class enjoyed two parties, raised money through car washes, took part in Sweetheart, and proved to be a real threat to the Seniors in Tolo competition. As freshmen, they had fun decorating and ushering for Baccalaureate. ln a few short years, they will become the Mighty Seniors of RHS and will remember the good times they had as the Class of '70, 94 .
