Dee wi born and reared in Ridge Farm She was a Ridge Farm cheerleader in grade school and high school Dee firvt received her training by cooking in restaurants This taught her how to prepare foods in targe amounts which was crucial to her success as a school cook Dee s next job was cooking for the school While working for the school. Dee went to cooking school She attended two summers in Champaign, one summer in Charleston Carbondaie. and Dekalb Dee started at the grade school with Dorothy loop and after four years began cooking for the high school The lunch program was not well established so the townspeople helped by building tables, having dinners to raise money, and donating kitchen items While cooking for the school district, inspectors from 'springheld and Washington. DC often came to inspect Dee's kitchen Dee also had supervisors to watch over her Ruth Jenner was the most dear supervisor she had Bv being a good friend. Ruth pushed her and made her the cook that she is today Mr Weller and Jim Ellis were also a great help Dee not only loved her work, but also the kids She always looked for good in each student Dee often took food requests from the kids first and the teachers second Dee showed the kids how well she liked them by trying to explain the governmental requirements and prices of the food to teach them about the lunch program and its importance to the school Dee loved to cook fried chicken mashed potatoes, gravy, crary cake, and yeast donuts which were some of the kids favorites too Not only did Dee cook, but she also was a supervisor of cooks from the Edgar county-lllinois line and to the Champaign and Chicago county lines. She enioyed this Job as well But Dee s job like all other good things, must come to an end Dee has plenty of free time since she retired, which she uses to get rid of accumulated items, to bowl, and to read Dee said the hardest thing for me to do was quit cooking at the school She often sets her clock at o00 am each morning out of habit Dee you II be missed Interviewed by Carrie Harvey Written by Lisa Spesard Dee Supported And Loved Us Through 38 Years Of โGood Cookingโ Top left: Lisa Spesard, Carrie Harvey, Sherri Wills, Angie Latoz, and Candy Conrad. It started when the school dressed as Hawaiian's, crazy day. and purple and gold day At the end of the week, the games were held Each class had participants in the egg toss, the quarter race, the three- legged race, orange pass, and tug-of-war The junior class won over-all. and were awarded $25 by the student council. The bonfire was exciting The cheerleaders performed a routine to Far From Over and they did a snake dance through town There were many people dressed up as Hawaiians. The bright and wild colors on all the clothes made peoples' eyes hurt after awhile. After some deep thought by the student council, the winners were cho- sen. Top Hawaiian boy John Loop wore a pink, orange, and yellow Hawaiian shirt with matching leis. Other accessories were sunglasses, a sun-visor, and camera. Top Hawaiian girl was Cheryl Thruman. She had on a grass skirt, a white shirt, and some Hawaiian beads. The tailgate party winners were Mr. and Mrs. Steve Pearson, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Loop, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Colemen and Mr. and Mrs. Vance Pearson. They showed up in cars by Chevrolet. A motor home, camaro, citation, and a blazer. They had an all-American theme which was Football, hotdogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet ' They ate hotdogs and apple pie. They won $25 from the booster club. There were more dressed for crazy day than there were for Hawaiian day. A wide variety of crazies showed up at our school. There was everything from opposite sexes to punk-rockers. The choices were many but a decision was reached on the winners. Win- ner Angie Latoz wore camouflage pants, a bow tie with lights that blinked, clown make-up, old glasses, an orange hat, pink slippers, striped socks, and multi- colored hair. Winner Darren Paree wore a dress, pan- ty-hose (Full of runs), tennis-shoes, red lip-stick, and a black wig. The student council had a very tough time choosing the winner for purple and gold day. Almost everyone had on purple and gold outfits of every kind. Winner Terrie Wright had on a purple sweat suit with a gold vest, purple sweat pants and a gold sweat shirt, purple and gold pompons, purple and gold garters, and pur- ple ribbons pinned to her gold sweat shirt. The Jay-ess' provided the music at our Home- coming Dance. Their performance was excel- lent. That's Tim Woodard of Ridge Farm, named as the 1984 recipient of the John Dickson Memorial Sportsmanship Award in boys basketball. The Dickson Award is one of the most cherished honors in Vermilion County athletics and is given in memory of the late Fairmount All-County athlete. The Award is presented on an individule basis in boys and girls basketball and football. Ridge Farm was selected for the team award. Criteria for the honor includes not only sportsmanship and fair play by the athletes and their coaches, but by school officials and their fans. The actions of few can rule out a school for consideration. W?oodard and Ridge Farm were selected by a committee sanctioned by the Vermilion County High School Association. Oakwood High Principal Glenn Keever heads the committee that includes athletic officials, members of the media and other interested persons. While there were several particularly outstanding candidates nominated. Keever's committee made Woodard its clear choice. Tim is finishing an outstanding career at Ridge Farm both athletically and acadenically, said his coach. Don Hackler He carries a 5.0 grade-point average into his final semester. That is a great achievement considering the many activities he has been involved in. Tim has participated in the band, chorus, and student council. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is an Illinois State Merit Scholar and has represented his school well at exchnage day functions. In addition he has worked with the scholastic bowl team and has helped tutor pupils at the Ridge Farm Grade School. Woodard's athletic achievements also are numerous. He has been a three-year starter on the varsity basketball team and narrowly missed All-County honors this season. He was elected co-captain by his teammates and led the team in scoring and rebounding. He also runs the 400 meters in track. Tim has been a leader both on and off the field of athletics, Hackler said. 'I have never seen him show disrespect to an official In fact, he is most cooperative with the officials and tries to set an example for his teammates. He is a very diligent person who gives 100 percent on and off the court. Woodard is considering attending Illinois Wesleyan University. He is the oldest of four sons of Mr Mrs. John Woodard of Ridge Farm Other nominees were Mitchell Schuter of Armstrong. Gene Phinney of Bismark-Henning, Louis Rethelford of Catlin. Englund, Music 48 r This is the first year to combine the Jr. High and High school in the flag squad. Lisa Spesard The flag squad consisted of four members this year. Captain Toni โ Junior, Becky โ 7th grade, Ka- ren โ 8th grade, Carrie โ 8th grade. Flag Squad is something that all of us worked hard towards and appreciated what we had accom- plished. We all had a great time and helped each other out on what problems we had. There were only four girls in the flag corp. this year, but what little people and time we had, we put a lot into it. We all enjoyed it, and we would like to thank Miss Englund for helping us through it. Toni Collom This year along with the march- ing band members was an added pleasure. There was a rifle and flag corps to further our enjoyment. The rifle team consisted of four members this year. Captain Sherri โ Senior, Stephanie โ 7th grade, Jennifer โ 7th grade, and Macey โ 7th grade. As captain of the rifle team, I think we had a great season. All of the girls worked hard to learn their routines. Practicing after school, sometimes in the rain, but we got the job done. At the beginning of the year, we couldn't twirl our rifles very well, but as the year went by we got bet- ter. Special thanks to Miss Englund for helping with our routines.
