To the graduating class of 1958: In the foothills and around the base of a mountain are many species of life, each competing desperately for survival. In this dense array of forms of life, there are some that survive and prosper and others that wither and die. Looking upward toward the peak of the mountain, fewer and fewer species can be seen. This space is wasting. Opportunities in life are much like the opportunities for plants and animals on the mountain. Most of us are content with mediocrity. However, there are unlimited opportunities at the top of the mountain. If you are willing to work diligently and persistently that you may move through the mass of trees and above the timberline, your opportunities will be unlimited.
