In this dense array of forms of life, there are some that survive and prosper and others that wither and die. Looking upward toward the peak of the mountain, fewer and fewer species can be seen. This space is wasting. Opportunities in life are much like the opportunities for plants and animals on the mountain. Most of us are content with mediocrity. However, there are unlimited opportunities at the top of the mountain. Rhoads, Coon, B. Hickman, Williams, Uhl, Sappinton, R. Koontz Milligna, Brown. The Ridgedale High School Band was organized last September under the direction of Mr. Robert Paxton. The band is composed of students from last year's bands in the Morral, Meeker, and Grand Prairie Schools. In addition to the high school band, Morral, Meeker, and Grand Prairie grade schools each have a beginner and a junior band making a total of seven bands in the Ridge- dale School District. Ridgedale also has a pep band which plays for athletic functions. We plan to start rehearsals this summer for a dance band. It is hoped that the dance band will be ready to play for some school dances by next year. HOIR FIRST ROW: Weir, Klatt, R. Rhoads, Young, Wash- burn, Hickman, Lovell, Frayer, Tong. The Ridgedale Choir composed of forty-six students was organized in the fall of 1957 under the direction of Mrs. DeMeri1 Stanbro. Choir members were selected before the close of the previous school year from the students of the three schools being consolidated and rehearsals have been held daily during the sixth period. The choir made its first appearance on the program for the Marion County Teachers' Workshop held at Ridgedale in September, 1957. The Music Boosters' organization purchased sixty blue Ccolumbiaj robes with white pennant stoles pictured above, which were worn for the Christmas concert December 17, 1957. The ceremony took place in the Morral gymnasitun with the queen reigning over the latter part of the evening's activities. Sharon wore a white ballerina length formal of nylon net. Attending the queen were Leia Rife and her escort, J ack Myers, seniors, Marie Litteral and her escort, ,Toe Moore, juniorsg Jackie Reed and her escort, Fred Moore, sophomores: and Kay Murphy and her escort, Larry Weaver, freshmen. The attendants wore white carnation corsages and the escorts wore red and white buttonnieres. Both former high schools were hit hard by graduation and we started the season with but one returning letterman. Lack of experience and leadership took its toll early in the season. Several games were lost by a few points and by Christmas the squad was suffering from a 2-7 won-lost record. Then the picture began to change. In the Holiday Tournament at Mt. Gilead, we upset Iberia to win the third place trophy. The boys gained a lot of confidence in themselves and the rest of the season was marked by continual improvement. We finished in a tie for second place in the Marion County League with a 5-4 won-lost record. In the final game of the season we defeated a highly-touted Alger five in the homecoming game 101-92. This finished our regular season's record at nine wins and ten defeats. In the first game of the Marion County Tournament we were defeated 50-45 by Claridon. Once again a determined spirit arose in the boys and we swept the next four games by a margin of fifteen points or more, climaxing the tourney with a 77-55 victory over Caledonia and a trip to the District Tourn- ament. In the district, after playing one of the most thrilling games of the season, we lost to a tall Richwood five, 75-72. Graduation will once again take five seniors from the team: Jack Myers. Tom Shifflet, Ted Frost, Dean Bollinger and Ron Washburn. Needless to say, these boys will be missed. Returning will be three juniors and two sophomores from the varsity team. They are .Toe Moore, George Young, J ack Clark, Fred Moore and Walter Breitigam. We also expect some good prospects from the reserve team. In reviewing the season as a whole, the school and community should be justly proud of the supreme effort and good sportsmanship displayed by the- boys during the year. Many of the thrilling moments in the tournaments will be remembered for a long time. BILL PHILLIPS COACH TH TEAM RE ER E BA KETBALL FIRST ROW: Tong, J. Moore, Rhoads, Miley, Heller, Uhl, Breitigam, Williams, Frayer, The Reserve Team was composed of ten sophomores and three juniors. They completed their season with a record of nine wins and seven losses, Larry Uhl was the high scorer of the season with 153 points. Walter Breitigam was second with 130 points. Alan Rhoads was the top rebounder on the ball club. Though handicapped by a lack of size, these boys played an aggressive type of ball which aided them in becoming one of the highest scoring reserve teams in the area toward the end of the season.
