CLASS HISTORY In july, 1939, our mothers awoke us early one morning and told us the day had finally arrived for us to start to school. We shall always remember our first grade teacher because she married during the year, and we then called her Mrs. Laidlaw, instad of Miss lfurr. How she managed the forty-two of us, we will never know. Most of us managed to pull through, and we found the second grade very different. We had homework to do, and our teacher, Miss Sue littdy, was strict. Miss Angeline Hinson was our teacher in the third and fourth grades. We made a booklet on North Carolina, and one on different kinds of early ships, trains, and auto- mobiles. We drew the pictures ourselves. H We went upstairs for our fifth year. We were divided, part of us in Miss Auta Smith's room, and the rest in Miss Minnie Barbee's, but we chan 'ed rooms for our fb classes. In the sixth grade, our teacher, Miss Minnie Barbee, had her hands full because the girls began experimenting with lipstick, and noticing the cute boys in our room. AMr. J. M. Jenkins was our teacher in the seventh grade. NVe will always remember the times he whipped himself to show us how it hurt. Miss Carrie Lee Lambert was our teacher in the eighth grade. We enjoyed learning useful arts as we had a period evry day to make aprons, pine needle baskets, and other useful things. , At last, in 1947, we entered high school with eighteen students. Our teachers were Mr. L. W. Byrum, Mr. W. F. Daniels, and Mrs. -I. N. Lilly. We enjoyed our new subjects and the fact that we were in high school helped us along. Much to our regret we lost four students that year-Grady Whitley decided to go to Oakboro. Clifford Hunnycutt and Billie joe Harkey decided they had enough education, so they left us. Peggy Jean Burris said adieux to Dear Old Ridgecrest and married during the year. We entered our sophomore year with fourteen students. We thought we were getting on in life-part of the students, especially .1 few of the girls, tried to rule the rest of the girls. We will always remember the hurt feelings and tears that followed. Max Burris and Louise Lambert moved during the year, however, they are still in school. Floyd Almond, Lillian Moyle, and Scenie Eudy left us for what they probably thought would be flowery beds of ease. XVe wonder if it proved to be so, or if they have sometimes felt some regret at not continuing to travel with us on the road to graduation. A

We entered our junior year feeling bigger than ever and on November 23, 1949, when we received our class rings we thought we were the stuff We gained a new principal and a new high school teacher that year-Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Dry. They filled the places of Mr. L. W. Byrum and Mr. W. F. Daniels. Everyone in the community has learned to appreciate their work and efforts of making Ridgecrest a better school. Two girls, Rosalene Burris and Jewel Herrin, joined us that year. Jewel Herrin decided she didn't want to finish after all, so she soon left us. Lillie Helms, Billie Lambert, and Peggy Whitley were other leavers from our class that year. On March 17, 1950, the Junior-Senior Banquet was held in Hotel Albemarle. The theme was St. Patrick's Day. Both juniors and seniors enjoyed the formalities. We decided we had enough money left in the treasury to take the seniors on ai trip, so on Friday morning, April 14, 1950, we left for Asheville, N. C. We spent tho night in The Homeland Park Cabins, and returned home on Saturday night. ' We enjoyed several class parties that year. The Christmas party highlighted the year. At last, we became seven happy seniors. We had always longed to be called Seniors The ones who were honored by having this title were: jewel Almond, Richard Almond, Carl Burris, Rosalene Burris, Sarah Clark, Irene Furr, and Kenneth Morgan. .Mrs. Lilly decided to settle down to housekeeping and jig-saw puzzles. Mr. S. H. Leonard came as a new science and math teacher, and Mr. H. D. Murphy came as a teacher and coach. With the help of the juniors, we again started printing a monthly school paper called The Crest. The paper had not been printed for several yCa1'S, and CVCYYOUC took an interest in it. Every senior took part in the making of the Fledgling and enjoyed working together. 1 Excitement filled the air as the time for our Senior Play approached. The title of the play was Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick. We also gave a chapel program during the year. The title of it was Close Courtingf' We later enjoyed a banquet honored by the juniors- Graduation day approached all too soon and we were fiiied with gladness and regret. Irene Furr, Hixlorian
