CLASS HISTORY In july, 1939, our mothers awoke us early one morning and told us the day had finally arrived for us to start to school. We shall always remember our first grade teacher because she married during the year, and we then called her Mrs. Laidlaw, instad of Miss lfurr. How she managed the forty-two of us, we will never know. Most of us managed to pull through, and we found the second grade very different. We had homework to do, and our teacher, Miss Sue littdy, was strict. Miss Angeline Hinson was our teacher in the third and fourth grades. We made a booklet on North Carolina, and one on different kinds of early ships, trains, and auto- mobiles. We drew the pictures ourselves. H We went upstairs for our fifth year. We were divided, part of us in Miss Auta Smith's room, and the rest in Miss Minnie Barbee's, but we chan 'ed rooms for our fb classes. In the sixth grade, our teacher, Miss Minnie Barbee, had her hands full because the girls began experimenting with lipstick, and noticing the cute boys in our room. AMr. J. M. Jenkins was our teacher in the seventh grade. NVe will always remember the times he whipped himself to show us how it hurt. Miss Carrie Lee Lambert was our teacher in the eighth grade. We enjoyed learning useful arts as we had a period evry day to make aprons, pine needle baskets, and other useful things. , At last, in 1947, we entered high school with eighteen students. Our teachers were Mr. L. W. Byrum, Mr. W. F. Daniels, and Mrs. -I. N. Lilly. We enjoyed our new subjects and the fact that we were in high school helped us along. Much to our regret we lost four students that year-Grady Whitley decided to go to Oakboro. Clifford Hunnycutt and Billie joe Harkey decided they had enough education, so they left us. Peggy Jean Burris said adieux to Dear Old Ridgecrest and married during the year. We entered our sophomore year with fourteen students. We thought we were getting on in life-part of the students, especially .1 few of the girls, tried to rule the rest of the girls. We will always remember the hurt feelings and tears that followed. Max Burris and Louise Lambert moved during the year, however, they are still in school. Floyd Almond, Lillian Moyle, and Scenie Eudy left us for what they probably thought would be flowery beds of ease. XVe wonder if it proved to be so, or if they have sometimes felt some regret at not continuing to travel with us on the road to graduation. A
