The lilting strains of gay Cuban music and the catchy rhythms of the maracas and castanets gave the cue for the opening curtain of this year's musical activities as the high school presented its operetta, In Gay Havana , on October ZZ. Its unique setting formed an excellent background for the romantic aspirations of a band of American tourists who be- come involved in a Cuban revolution. Every moment was packed with excitement and sus- pense. Participation in the County Music Festival at Hoaglin-Jackson School March 14 was another high point in the year's activities. A Dutch village scene laid in the Catskill Mountains, home of Washington Irving's be- loved Rip Van Wink1e , was the setting for the grade children's presentation of this de- lightful story in an operetta on March 25. Special recognition goes to Larry Poling for his portrayal of the title role, to Vera Johnson, who portrayed Dame Van Winkle, Gary Stewart and Jeannie Haines as their children and to Hendrick Hudson and the Gnomes for their excellent supporting roles. Our school was represented at the District Auditions held at Bowling Green State Uni- versity March 26 by Dotty Lou Stewart, Sopranog Joan Johnson, Mezzo-Soprano, Bonnie Lu Logan, Pianist and the Girls Sextette. Bonnie Lu Logan received a superior rating and was privileged to play in the State finals at Capital University in Columbus on April 30. 23
