It was up to them to secure own meat and other foodg which they did mainly by hunting, their only sport. They were destructible to wild life, seemingly thinking its plentiness would remain foreverg never thinking it would have to be preserved because of scarcity. Today, being a more settled and a more civilized pee ple we have created athletics to develop one's physical strength as well as one's mental ability. With all our modern conveniences it is unnecessary to use much energy or to have proper muscular activity as was essential long ago. Therefore, in our modern schools we have basketball football, and baseball played as competitive feats with rewards for achievement. In this way recognition is made to the various schools. It presents the opportunity for mingling with people outside one's own community, and unites all sections of our nation together into one peoe ple. The entire nation is consequently strengthened by developing minds and bodies for play while other countries are developing the minds and bodies of their youth for war 2

OUR CHEERLEADERS When any undertaking by a group is begun, no mat- ter how little, there must be a leader,--someone who can work with the group and lead them on to a suc- cessful completion of that work. This year the pupils se- lected Dick Weigle and Dor- is Haines to be their lead- ers in the undertaking of cheering and boosting the basketball teams as they played. They did commend- able work in urging the teams on when they were 1agging,and in keeping the crowd alert. Much credit and apprecia- tion is due Doris and Dick for their excellent perfor- mance. Q OUR SPORTSMANSHIP TROPHY A trophy is worth only what it represents. This sportsmanship trophy is hr valuable to the entire school because it repre- sents teams with fairplay, cleanliness, and courtesy as their goalsg captains with courage and clearness of mind as their prime charaeteristicsg a coach with deep moral qualities as a guiding factorg a stu- dent body with respect to- ward all as U distinguish- ing trait. It means each one has done his best to 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto youu. A person showing sports- man-like qualities has the recipe for success. May the recipe never fail.
