It was up to them to secure own meat and other foodg which they did mainly by hunting, their only sport. They were destructible to wild life, seemingly thinking its plentiness would remain foreverg never thinking it would have to be preserved because of scarcity. Today, being a more settled and a more civilized pee ple we have created athletics to develop one's physical strength as well as one's mental ability. With all our modern conveniences it is unnecessary to use much energy or to have proper muscular activity as was essential long ago. Therefore, in our modern schools we have basketball football, and baseball played as competitive feats with rewards for achievement. In this way recognition is made to the various schools. It presents the opportunity for mingling with people outside one's own community, and unites all sections of our nation together into one peoe ple. The entire nation is consequently strengthened by developing minds and bodies for play while other countries are developing the minds and bodies of their youth for war 2
