CLASS PROPHECY The sun descended on our covered wagon, a crude and slow means of transportation but the most suitable for the journey to the Northwest Territory. As pioneers we bravely face many perils on our journey. We prepared ourselves for the night, hoping no Ind- ians would visit us and disturb our slumbers for we like to sleep. My friends call me Rip Van Winkle, the Second He, of course, just slept for twenty years. I have his record broken. One time we went to sleep coming from England and awakened just in time for the Revolutionary Warf Oh, hum, I'm getting sleepy. I wonder what will be taking place when I next awaken? KSleep comes and all is forgottenl. Another day dawned and as I looked around I triedtm remember, Uwhere are the Alleghany Mountains and where are the crude facilities we once knew? What is this lux- urious means of transportation?U A faint voice from in front informed me, This is the Covered Wagon of l958.H nl958!U I exclaimed, UWhat's so, important about this year that I should awaken?H uNearby in Ridge School a class of eleven girls and two boys are graduating,U was the reply. HI need more sleep,U I yawned, and rolled over on my luxurious bed and continued my slumbers as theCbvcreC Wagon of l958 traveled along. Crash! With a jolt I was awakened. HAn accident! Get his license numberlu cried my companion. I went to get the license number. I stopped with astonishment,--the license plate was marked 1950. Twelve years had passed since I had awakened at Ridge School. That thought was in my mind as w? were being taken to the hospital to have minor injuries taken care of. UE1even girls and two boys was the number my companion had said,--I really should have stopped to see them. Won- derwhat they're doing now?H Stopping the automobile,we found ourselves in front of a magnificent white stone structure which bore the name of Haines Hospital. A nurse ushered us into a room where there was an operating table with shaded lamps which cast their reflections on Pauline Haines whose face is now outlined with patience and endurance. After minor cuts and bruises were taken care of,we wandered down the hall until we came to a room where Lois Uneapher was tale ing the pulse of Virginia Taylor, a socialite, who had been operated on for gallstoncs recently. Lois seemed to be in a great rush as her next patient was a handsome young man, she had to count his pulse twice because she said the first time she held his hand too long. In an- ll
