Rider High School 461 1 Cypress Wichita Falls Texas 76510 2 f Opening he experiences we have in high school are the ones we will remember the most. As teenagers, we are constantly facing paths which lead in new directions. Rider High School did not let us down. It was there for us, not only as a place to get an education, but also, it allowed us to discover ourselves and experience new emotions. We found friends we could con- fide in, cry to, and share the happy times with. They were there when we made mistakes. Together, we travelled the path that allowed us to create our per- sonality. Although we faced the path together, we became different. Our at- titudes and characteristics are unique. There will never be anyone quite like us. We learned responsibility. When we made committments, we kept them. lt did not matter that we had to sacrifice time. We were dedicated. Sometimes we felt as though we could not go on, and that is when we realized that we had a limit. Somehow, though, we managed to keep a constant pace in our search for new directions. Some chose to push their mental ability to the limit, making the best grades possi- ble. Others were involved in sports, demanding the most of their physical abilities. Still others were part of organizations which kept them moving in a positive direction. Nearly everyone was involved in something different, yet we all were striving for the same end - to be better than ever before. Let us not forget those of us who were less involved in school. It was not because we chose to be uninvolvedg we held the ti- tle of employee We worked long hours for the minimum wage of 3.35. There was a feeling of independence as we cashed our checks. We were able to reach our goals. We might have been buying our own car or simply just paying for our own lunch. Whatever the case, we enjoyed travelling the paths of the business world. There were times when it seemed that our lives were not going anywhere. Yet, everything has a purpose. ln some way, every experience brings us closer to our goals. Opportunities always exist to par- ticipate in new experiences. However, we must search for these opportunities, and upon finding the path in which they lie, follow the path as in leads us in New Directions. Table of Contents pening. . . The students first went to the auditorium to plan their schedules and then ventured on to the student center to have their schedules approved by the counselors. Then, the race began. Students rushed to the different departments to sign up for their classes before they were full. Through all the excitement and confusion, registration at Rider went well for the students. Logan Terry Many sophomores still feel insecure about their futures. Often sophomores, like the freshmen, feel inferior to their upperclassmen i l peers. For this reason many sophomores lean towards vocations in which they would feel superior and respected. J l l d Disc Jockey: Many juniors take advantage of the opportunity to inform people of their maturity through jobs where they will be heard by many. Chuck Smith Seniors, the rulers of the school, become power-hungry as they strive to be a success before they enter college. These students set very high goals for themselves, and will do anything to achieve them. Power is a key word in the lives of these students. President of the United States: Seniors have no problems feeling superior, therefore being elected President would probably be no big deal. Tamara Avery What Do You Want to Be? When You Grow Up s students start high school, they begin to consider their futures more seriously. They begin to define their goals, and analyze their capabilities. Once their values have been defined, they begin to see the various careers available to them. With their goals and capacities in mind, each student begins to prepare mentally and physically to train and orient himself for the vocation that would most satisfy his particular requirements. Underclassmen often have difficulty realizing their true desires. When freshmen are asked what they would like to be when they grow up many have absolutely no idea. While other freshmen have set very high goals for themselves, and decide to begin high school and attend one of the vocational schools. At these schools, underclassmen learn the necessary skills required for their pursued job. School Crossing Guard: This sophomore enjoys the respect she receives when helping young children cross the street. Angela Hobbs Juniors, finally able to call themselves up- perclassmen, relax and enjoy their superiority. These students begin to feel carefree, and ready to take on the world. Many times juniors choose careers where they will be able to let the world see their new found notoriety. Growing Up f 11 August Apparently Pays Off n August, while most people are lounging around the pool soaking up some of the last rays of summer, others are at school preparing for the new school year. This preparation includes everything from punting footballs to high kicks, learning new music to practicing new cheers, and, let us not forget the ever- precious air conditioning system. The Raider football team comes out two weeks before school starts to sharpen their techniques and practice their many drills. These drills, known as two-a-days, are held in the morning and again in the afternoon. The Rider Ranglers also begin practicing in August. They work on their precision timing and on their choreographed routines. The Pride of the Raiders Marching Band begins rehearsing in August to insure a terrific per- formance for the first football game. The cheerleaders prepare by practicing building pyramids and learning new cheers, They also practice twice each day. The school ad- ministration also planned ahead for the com- ing year by installing an air conditioning system. lt is obvious by the Raider's suc- cessful year that preparing for the future pays off. Boots and Western wear could be seen throughout the halls worn by spirited Raiders during this time. The highlight of the week was the Round-Up Assembly. The assembly was held in the field house and had the theme of All My Raiders starring Scorpio, the rock singer, his bopping boppers, the senile doctor, and his family. The Spirit Specialists who brought Scorpio back to life were our very own Mr. and Miss Raider nominees. Mr. Jack Cline was named honorary Raider because of the abundance of spirit he expresses at Rider. The week drew to a close with the naming of Todd Owens and Lisa Van Geem as 1984-1985 Mr. and Miss Raider. This week, filled with tradition and excitement, proved to be interesting and fun for everyone at Rider. You mean he's NOT going to die? Let's get this show on the road! Practice announcements, count ballots, file AGR cards? It's a hard job, but she knows she runs the school. To her, the young men and women here at Rider are more than students, they're all her children. Could it be? Yes, it is! lt's Gator Jones, Rider's superstar rocker. Cha Cha Bravada just loves to hear his guitar screech. It seems that Gator has swept the naive girl off her feet. Poor Cha Cha, she just has to learn that love can't grow in the fast lane. Will Mrs. Plummer get her job done? Will Duke and Bud rekindle their old flames? Or will Cindy cap- ture the upperclassman she has always wanted. How long will Biff and Muffy be able to keep up their treacherous racket? And what about Cha Cha, can she live with the heartbreaking absence of Gator? Stay tuned, soap fans, and find out. . . B rothers and sisters have always been known to quarrel, but many people do not realize how much brothers and sisters mean to one another. A close relationship between brothers and sisters is a bond that can never be destroyed. A brother or sister can always be relied upon when others do not come through, and the bond only strengthens with time. Some bonds even go to the point of working together as a teamg a part time job, a sport, or some other activity. There are many advantages and disadvantages to having brothers and sisters: such as your brother or sister telling your parents something you did not want them to know, sharing a car, and teachers comparing younger brothers and sisters to their older ones. Older brothers and sisters are relied upon for rides to and from school and help on homework. Brothers and sisters, although we may not realize it, are a valuable part of our high school years and our lives. I don't know him... Their creative pep rallies and their special days created excitment during the football season. These special days include: Mash Day, Double Your Spirit Day, Boot Day, and Out class the Coyotes Day. Even though the years activities changed drastically, the cheerleaders went with the flow and had good pep rallies with the help of their sponsor, Mrs. Marttha Callaway even with lagg- ing pep rally attendance. The basketball season also gave new challenges for these eight girls and they met the challenge by promoting ex- citement on the sidelines at the games. These eight girls shared the rare opportunity of being elected cheerleaders. Their loyatly, determination, and friendliness helped make this year very special. The cheerleaders upheld the school traditions in the best ways. All their bumps, crashes, and bruises could not dampen their energy, for the 1985 cheerleaders helped make this year one of the best. Another function of the Goalpost Decorators is making the run through signs for the football games. The Run-Through committee, a special group within Goalpost, is responsible for designing two signs for each football game. In addition to their other Goalpost duties. The officers of the Ranglers start three weeks before school and are joined by the rest of the members a week later to learn all the routines to be used during the year. Ranglers perform at all the football games, some basketball games, and march in parades throughout the year. This spirit organization is made of sophomore, junior, and senior girls who try out in December of each year. Their tryouts are based on the girls' ability to learn a routine quickly and how well high kicks and splits are performed. The most important event of the Ranglers' year is their sweetheart banquet. Have you ever wondered who that mad photographer is that keeps trying to take your pic- ture? Or who the person with pencil is who asks nothing but questions, questions, questions? Who is this striped group of people who keep gawking at you at all major school events? These are the crazy characters of the 1984-85 Annual Staff, whose sole resonsibility is the production of The Raider. These students find that they are actually moving in New Direc- tions as they create this year's Raider Annual. This select group of juniors and seniors spend much of their time debating over the annual's theme and cover design, and rushing to have their pages laid-out before deadlines. During the summer, section editors attend workshops to learn new annual production styles and trends. A new computer is a welcome addition this year, as it aids in making this year's annual the best ever. Staff members spend much time after school in the annual staff room typing in copy and playing word games, but An- nual Staff is not all fun and games. Although new to the job as head coach, Hartman, brought eighteen years of ex- perience with him. Having coached under Rider former head coaches Joe Bob Tyler and Morris Mercer, Coach Hartman gathered plenty of experience to take over the head coach position. Coach Hartman's goal for the 1984 Raiders was to continue the winning tradition of the Raiders and lead them into the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Hartman stressed to the team that unity and effort are more important ingredients for suc- cess than is the individual physical abilities of members of the team. Coach Hartman's three assistant varsity coaches include Don Flippin, Ken Burroughs, and Nick Hollars. Coach Flippin has been a member of the Raider coaching staff for five years. He has gained valuable coaching experience under Head Coaches Morris Mercer and Don Hartman. Flippin's primary coaching function is to be in charge of the defensive force. Coach Burroughs has been at Rider for six years, with three years varsity coaching experience under head coaches Mercer and Hartman. Coach Burroughs's duties include working with the offensive linemen and the defensive 118 f Varsity Football linebackers. Coach Hollars has been at Rider for five years, with this being his first year as a varsity assistant coach under Coach Hartman. Coach Hollars instructs the defensive secondary and helps with the backs and receivers on offense. The 1984 Rustlers were under the helm of head Coach Lynn Donart. Coach Donart has been coaching and teaching at Rider for 3 years. Coach Donart's main function with the Rustlers is to coach the offensive and defensive lines, while working with the specialty teams. Coach Donart's future goals include improving his teaching techniques, strive for a winning season, and at some point in time to be a varsity coach. Coach Donart says working with the freshman football team has taught him patience, to work hard but impress to the kids to have fun, while making sure they all unders- tand the fundamentals. Freshman assistant coach, John McCleskey, is in his first year at Rider. He has had an enjoyable time here so far while adjusting to big time high school life. Coach McCleskey works with the offen- sive backs and the secondary on defense. Coach Mc- Cleskey's future goals for the team are to encourage more participation in athletics, and to help the students achieve the most they can based on their abilities. They are always around when needed, especially during this year marked by changes in the educational system. The administrators are always interpreting guidelines and supporting the students in their endeavors both at school and in the community. Mr. Jack Robertson is serving his first year as principal at Rider. It is the consensus of the faculty and student body that he has done an excellent job. Mr. Robertson is present at every school activity to cheer for the Raiders. Also, he can always be seen with a smile on his face in the halls to make sure everything is running smoothly. Mr. Robertson's devotion to the Raiders is very important and special to all who are associated with Rider High School. Dr. Lee Williamson, superintendent, and the Wichita Falls School Board play an integral part in the success of the Rider faculty and student body. With the best interests of students, the School Board and Dr. Williamson provide the guidance and leadership necessary to a quality education. They have the responsibility of not only keeping the grounds clean, but they also have the duty of maintaining the building. The first shift opens the building and keeps Rider clean while the students are here. The second shift is responsible for cleaning the classrooms and preparing them for the next day. The custodians do an excellent job in keeping Rider pleasant. he cafeteria ladies can be seen each day at lunch with friendly smiles. Each day they arrive around seven a.m. to prepare lunch for ap- proximately nine-hundred students. They leave around three p.m. each day. Many new experiences lay in store as we tossed aside the Mustang-Bobcat rivalry and began to become Raiders. The fear soon faded and the excitement grew as each year passed, and our Raider Pride grew as well. We made lifelong friends and aquired memories which we will always cherish . . . Our freshman year started us in a direction which would affect the next four years of our lives. We were nervous and scared as our moms dropped us off at the front door to begin our lives at Rider. Many experiences during the year made this one of the neatest ever . . . Our first pep rally, getting spirit sticks, initiations, dressing up on Fridays, our first Round Up, learning the Alma Mater, and becoming Raiders . . . As sophomores we took one more step. We got more involved and grew more mature . . . Joining clubs, getting our driver's license, cruising Kemp, sitting on the West side at pep rallies, Scholastic Awards, district SAAAAA football champs, starting new traditions, enduring the last few days of being lower classmen . . . Our junior year was a special one. Finally upperclassmen, we set new goals and achieved new highs...Taking the PSAT, attending the Prom, laboring over term themes, joining annual staff and A Capella, Raider Crew and cheerleader tryouts, flaunting senior rings, district basketball champs, the victory breakfasts, Region football champs, feeling lost the last three days without the seniors . . . As seniors we saw the end of our path fast approaching. We cherished each day, knowing that soon we would em- bark on an even greater journey Finally getting air conditioning, essential elements, pep rallies on the floor, nominating Mr. and Miss Raider, taking the SAT and ACT, getting Coke machines, senior play, senior night, our last Coyote Week, being scared of things to come and trying not to show it . . . Our years at Rider changed us, they helped us grow into individuals. The things we learned will shape our future and determine the directions we will take. . . .
