Everyone who played in the pep band enjoyed what they were doing and had lots of fun. The pep band helped the cheerleaders add life at the games and assemblies. The players also appreciated the pep band’s spirit when they cheered the players back on the field or on the court. The pep band is sometimes said to be a pep squad. The band would like to say thank you to Mr. Nutson for all the work he has put into the band to make it better. 1. The pep band cheers on the football team to a win at the Homecoming game. 2. The band played the recent hit Good Vibrations,” “Sleigh Ride,” and a few others. The Spring Concert was held on May 20. The team includes 12 members, who perform dance routines during halftime of football and basketball games to entertain the crowds. The girls had to practice several hours each week in order to prepare and learn their routines. Their first performance was for the Homecoming game. The original team remained the same except for Caron Michaels, Tammi Schofield, and Teresa Miller. They were replaced by Sheila Hitchman, Stormy Hayter, and Paula Burke for basketball season. Mr. Nutson feels that for the first year it went quite well. Special thanks to Mrs. Cantrell, Mrs. Nutson, and Mrs. Wooden for staying up those long hours getting the uniforms made in time for the Homecoming game. Thank you to everyone who made the drill team possible. 1 1. At halftime of the Homecoming game the team lined up on the field to show their stuff. 2. OFFICE 20 The Irish football team showed a marked improvement this year with a 7-2 record, which is the best for a Riddle team in many years. FOOTBALL There was disappointment along with the excitement this year when the Irish fell eight points short of a trip to the state playoffs in a 14-6 loss at Glendale. The personal statistics were very good with Jim Nelson rushing for over one thousand yards, while Jim Brown rushed for over eight hundred yards, and Randy Dew for five hundred yards. To highlight the season the Irish also placed eight people in nine positions on the All-League teams, and Jim Nelson on the Shrine team. A couple of new coaches also did a good job this year. Coach Funston did an excellent job with the line, while Coach Nolz helped out with the backs and coached the JV team. 1. Irish intent as quarterback Shawn McClendon calls the play. 2. IRISH SHINE IN 79 League 8-2 Season 9-12 The Irish team started the season with only four of their six returning lettermen. Eight new players were added to the roster with hopes that they would gain experience fast. The season started out slow for the girls, losing seven games and winning only three. As soon as league started the Irish were shining, however. They sparkled so much they won all their games except for losing to St. Mary's twice. Then, before they or anybody knew it. they were in the district playoffs facing the Yoncalla Eagles; the team they have met twice before in playoff action. But after the match, the Eagles had prevailed once again taking away the District 5-A Crown we had in 1978. At the beginning of the season the OSAA established a new rule concerning substitutions. This rule was created to eliminate confusion between the officials and players. 1. Caron Michaels bumps the ball to the setter. 2. Angela Green goes in for Lesa Aikins as a spiker. 3. Four Irish players made the All-Star team: Cindie Wagoner and Nena Bryant second team and Lesa Aikins and Jill Juhl first team. CROSS COUNTRY 1979 The Irish had a cross country team for the first time in five years. They didn’t have enough runners to make a full team but they still competed. All the team members improved their times tremendously. The boys were running up to 30 miles a week and the girls were running up to 20 miles a week. Tim Wilborn was top placer for the Irish, placing twelth out of thirty-one in league and twenty-sixth out of sixty in district. IRISH CONTINUE TO FIGHT AFTER LOSS OF PLAYERS The Irish basketball season started with a very strong ball club with plenty of experience and depth. The Irish ended up having a very rewarding season of 12-10.
