But the hopes of these seven Freshmen were soon taken away by the wishes that the upperclassmen had made and were going to fulfill during initiation, Which lasted three days. Officers of the class for our first year in high school were President-Bob Strode, Vice-President-William Vaughn, and Secretary-Shirley Weathers. The class elected Emma Jean Matlock as their candidate for carnival queen. In our Sophomore year we increased our ranks to eleven members gaining Betty Wagoner from Argas, Indiana, Isa Macdonald from Scotland, Doris Hollingsworth from Jacksonville, Oregon, and Erwin Harmon from California. This year we dished out punishment to the lowly Freshman class. Officers for this year were President-Robert Strode, Vice-President-William Vaughn, Secretary-Doris Hollingsworth. Candidate for carnival queen this year was Doris Hollingsworth. As Juniors we received our class rings. We put on the play Feuding in the Hills which went over very good. The Junior-Senior banquet was given by us on May 6. We also worked very hard to become Seniors of 1950-51. Class officers for this year were Doris Hollingsworth-President, Bill Vaughn-Vice-President, Shirley Weathers-Secretary. Again this year the class elected Doris Hollingsworth for carnival queen candidate. As Seniors we sponsored the first Homecoming aided by the rest of the student body. At mid-term we lost two girls-Shirley Weathers, and Jean Renhard who decided to get married. Our play for this year was very successful. Officers for this year were Robert Strode-President, Doris Hollingsworth-Vice-President and Shirley Weathers-Secretary. Doris Hollingsworth was Senior class candidate for Homecoming queen. We will now be free to face the world and make the best of the things that we have learned at good old Riddle High School. 8 We, the class of 51 being of reasonably sound mind and understanding, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament. To the Junior class we will our position as high and mighty Seniors. To the Sophomore class we will our intelligence and good looks. To the Freshman class we will our good grades and courage to carry on in the following years of high school. Doris Hollingsworth: I, Doris Hollingsworth, will my I in Journalism to Dick Mann for that's the only way he'll ever get it and my position as cheerleader to anyone with the lung power to carry on. Isa Macdonald: I, Isa Macdonald, will my job as postmistress for Mrs. McGee to Marlene Smith and my ability to get along with Coach to Virginia Schmidt. Betty Wagoner: I, Betty Wagoner, will my citizenship grade and my ability to get along with all my teachers to John Gould. Robert Strode: I, Robert Strode, will my sense of humor to Miss Carroll and my long blond hair to Jerry Meyers. Albert Hausotter: I, Albert Hausotter, will my ability to be tardy for classes to Robert Van Doren, my grades to Theo Mann and my English book to John Rigsby. Erwin Harmon: I, Erwin Harmon, will my chemistry book to anyone who is interested and my janitor Job to any strong armed handsome boy who will use the money wisely. William Vaughn: I, William Vaughn, will my skill to collect ads for the annual to the Junior class and my No. 99 in basketball to anyone who can wear it. 9 Hop aboard our magic carpet, and join us in our little trip. Incidentally this carpet stops only in towns where past students of old Riddle High are located. The year is 1960 and everything is quiet and peaceful. First let's stop off in Los Angeles and look the town over. While the ladies go to get their hair fixed at the Macdonald Beauty Parlor owned by none other than our old chum Isa Macdonald, the boys look at some of the new 1960 car models. Whom should we find as sales manager but our old friend, Doris Hollingsworth. Of course, she's selling Nashes, while keeping one eye on the ocean. Reason: Bell bottom trousers, coat of Navy blue. Here come the girls so let's jump on the magic carpet and travel to Houston, Texas. As we stop off here we see our pal in peace and war, Albert Hausotter, who now owns half of Texas and has several hundred head of cattle. He invites us out to dinner at the Eat Less for More Money cafe owned by our old companion Erwin Harmon. It is only one of the many restaurants owned by Erwin. We thank Albert for the wonderful meal and take off on our magic carpet for Mexico where we plan on hearing a concert. When we arrive at the concert hall who should we find presenting the concert but our classmates of 1950-'51 - Robert Strode - famous clarinet player and Betty Wagoner - well-known trombone player. After hearing a fine concert we leave Mexico for Washington D.C. where we plan on seeing the newly elected Republican president. Much to our astonishment he is none other than our old partner William Vaughn. He plans to move the capitol to Riddle, Oregon as most things which go on in the nation's capitol are riddles. Thus we end our journey wishing the best of luck to all of our classmates. 10 ALICE BKLK KENNETH BRITTAIN WARREN CARRELL 12 JOYCE LOPER DONALD LAWRENCE NANCY HAUSOTtnr 14 GEORGE VAUGHH FRANELYN WHITE uniors We, the Junior class of '51 returned to the halls of R.H.S. proud of our new status as upperclassmen. Our class enrollment reached the twenty-mark with the enrollment of Virginia Schmidt a transfer from Scappoose Oregon. Oui class has been exceedingly active in all extra-curricular activities throughout our high school days. All of our girls are members of the Girls' League and a goodly number are also members of the G.A.A. A large number of our boys represent our class in the field of athletics. A very successful humorous play Quit Your Kidding in which all members of the class took part, was presented under the direction of Mr. D. Brown our class Advisor. We are looking forward to the Junior-Senior banquet with great pleasure. The theme of the banquet to be held in the school auditorium in May, is to be a Japanese Garden with table decorations to match. The banquet will be served by the ladies of the Eastern Star, to be followed by the Junior-Senior Prom which will be held in the gymnasium. The Junior class is looking forward with anticipation to becoming high and mighty Seniors of '52. Ruby Wooley, Phyllis Huffman. This; however, was thoroughly subdued by the Sophomores at their fall initiation. The initiation started with the dressing-up of the frosh . They were later paraded up town to begin a long evening of torture. To complete the initiation the Freshmen were returned to the high school gymnasium where they played a number of games and were later served refreshments by the Sophomore class. Doris Hollingsworth-electee from the Junior class-now a Senior, will graduate this year. She will be replaced by an electee from the Sophomore class of 1951-'52 after serving as cheerleader for two school terms. Marlene Smith was elected from the Sophomore class. She will serve as yell leader for one more school term. Noma Townsend, from the Freshman class will leave high school having served as yell leader for four school terms. Working together these three girls have encouraged our school spirit at our many football and basketball games. They wore white long-sleeved satin blouses with kelly green full skirts. iBatld The Riddle School Band was formed under the direction of Mr. Curtis Winders at the beginning of the 1940-'50 school term. On December 22, 1940 the band made its first public appearance at the Christmas program. Main event of the band's first year was the trip to Portland to participate in the Rose Festival of 1950. Forty-two members made this trip by bus on June 8. The band marched in the Junior Rose Festival on June 10 and brought home two trophys which made us very proud of them. They took first place in first year bands and second place in all around competition with other bands. The band started off 1950 by playing over the radio on January 9 and presenting a concert on January 11. A tour was made in April to several South Douglas schools where short concerts were given. On May 7 the band presented their spring concert. Besides selections and marches by the entire group there were a number of solos which gave individual members a chance to show what they could do. Luckily the band will lose only three members through graduation: Doris Hollingsworth, Robert Strode, and Betty Wagoner. 34 i -fomzcomuiy Riddle celebrated its first Homecoming on November 11, 1950, by defeating Yoncalla 58-20 in the afternoon. Evening festivities were held in the gymnasium which was decorated in green and white. Riddle's colors, and purple and gold, Yoncalla’s colors. The Yoncalla high school was invited to the dance after the football game. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the queen, Phyllis Huffman-Sophomore candidate-by Doris Hollingsworth-Senior candidate. The queen was presented a corsage by her classmates. Musical entertainment was provided by a girls'trio, consisting of Doris Hollingsworth, Joanne Hausotter and Bertha Mae Aspey singing The Missouri Waltz,” and Put Your Arms Around Me. Barbara Wilcox sang All My Love and Scatterbrain. Refreshments of punch and cookies were served at 10:30 followed by two hours of dancing. As everyone had such a fine time we are looking forward to our Homecoming next year. 25 Glenda Davis, Nona Townsend, Theo Mann, Sharon Gabrielson, Doris Hollingsworth, Virginia Scheldt. Joyce Loper. A very successful Sock Hop was held in the Gymnasium of the R.H.S. student body on November 12, 1950. During the spring term the League gave a Mothers' Tea and presented a program honoring the Mother's of the members. Sue Brown was elected President, but moved away at the end of the first semester. Brown who came here from Minnesota in the fall of '47. Basketball, which was the only major competition of the school, has been the principal sport at Riddle High School through the years, and although football, and track have been added to the interscholastic program, it was again voted the most popular sport of the school. Football was added to the athletic program as a major sport in the fall of '48, and track in the spring of 'SO. The overall record of R.H.S. teams for the past four years in interscholastic competition shows the Irish well out in front in the athletic picture. In Basketball the Irish have amassed a total of forty-nine wins while losing twenty-three. In football, over a three year span the R.H.S. squads have won fourteen, tied one, lost seven. Entering interscholastic track competition for the first time last spring, Riddle competed in only three meets, winning one, losing one, and placing fourth in the district meet. We are proud of the athletic records of the Riddle teams and of the athletes who have and are representing our school. We look to the future Irish teams to carry on the traditions of sportsmanship, and the clean, hard, competitive spirit of the teams which have strived to build that record. The athletes and their Coaches wish to extend their thanks to the student body of Riddle High School, and to the fine work of the Irish cheerleaders, for their proud and loyal support in defeat as well as in victory. 33 Ray Adslt, Willard Lilly, Donald Lawrence, Lyle Loffer, Robert Strode.
