In the fall of '45 a group of wide-eyed, frightened Freshmen journeyed into the halls of Riddle High. Cautiously awaiting the fateful day of initiation, we became alert, grasping all hints available as to what the future held for us. As Sophomores we entered school with high spirits, looking forward to the coming events. With sixteen members we were the largest class in high school. During the latter part of this year we journeyed to the Oregon Caves, a trip much enjoyed by a happy, carefree group, looking forward to the next two years. Upper classmen now...waiting to join into the events reserved for us, such as the Junior-Senior Banquet and Junior Class Play. On one balmy afternoon, of this year, Mr. Cook and a happy group of Juniors went to the South Umpqua Falls. As Juniors we contributed greatly to the athletic field of volleyball and basketball. Mighty Seniors...twelve of us now. A year full of fun and one that will be long remembered. During this year the Douglas County “B League Tournament was held in our gymnasium. We had four girls on the volleyball team and three boys on the basketball team. Skip Day, Junior-Senior Banquet, Senior Minstrel Show and Graduation which took place in '48 and '49 climaxed our final year. SENIOR CLASS WILL We, the Class of “49 , twelve strong, having plenty of brawn but little of brain, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament. To the Junior class we will our places as high and mighty Seniors. To the Sophomore class we will our intelligence, though it be little, and our determination. To the Freshman class we will our years of high school experience. I, Jennie Howard, will my flat feet to Doris Hollingsworth and my big grin to George Vaughn. I, Don Riddle, will my crew cut to Kenny Haverly and my brawny strength to Wyatt Hendrick. I, Laurel Zumwalt, will my flirting ability to Isa Macdonald and my pug nose to Bob Strode. I, Jack Carter, will my basketball suit, No. 66, to Dick Mann and my big feet to Danny Ensslin. I, Eileen Hammersley, will my explosive temper to Billy Vaughn and my bossing ability to Anna Mae Hervey. I, Marjorie Boyd, will my grades to Priscilla Pruner and my red hair to Coach Brown. (He can use it.) I, Richard Ritzman, will my bright red socks to Harry Bushnell and my platform shoes to Warren Carroll. I, Clarice Burgoyne, will my desk in front of the assembly to Charles Miles and my muscles to Joyce Shoemaker. I, Gladys Rupp, will my driving ability to Doris Gilbreath and my ability to get along with other people to Dorothy Burgoyne. I, Gene Swanson, will my chemistry grade to any future chemistry student and my height to Buddy Carter. I, Alice Schneider, will my figure to Alice Belk and my personality glasses to Barbara Wilcox. (I know she will look charming in them.) I, Jim Townsend, will my size 42 warm up jacket to Donald Gillespie and my lazy manner to Miss Carroll. 9 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY After graduating from R. H. S. in 1949, I became famous as a woman engineer, I now own the largest railway line in the world. Thinking of my good fortune I wondered how my classmates were getting along. For this is 1959, ten years since we left dear old Riddle High together. The headlines of the paper caught my eye. John L. Lewis has died and a woman is taking his place. Why it’s Eileen Hammersley, one of my classmates, she always was a good boss. Who should be ushered into my library but Gladys Rupp) I hadn't heard from her since she became a missionary and traveled to many foreign countries. Her latest trip was to Africa. Together we took a trip to the heart of New York City and who should we meet but Richard Ritzman. He has become a famous clothes designer and owns a large department store. Rich told us this about our graduating class of '49. Laurel Zumwalt is a celebrated movie star and is noted as the best actress on the screen. She has starred in many of the latest hits. James Townsend has taken championship as the world's greatest wrestler. He has made millions and is soon going to retire. Jennie Howard has become very successful in the business world for she is now the personal secretary of the President of the United States. Jennie always did go in for the big business. Don Riddle, this I should have guessed, is a very well known comedian. He is now starring in a picture called ''Life With Riddle”. He, also, has many radio programs. Alice Schneider owns an art studio in the heart of Manhattan, and her work is known throughout the world. Besides excelling in paintings of scenery and the high lights of the world, she is, also, a great portrait painter. Jack Carter is now the sole owner of the manufacturing of Carters Little Liver Pills. He inherited the business, and since owning it he has improved it greatly. You can buy the pills in any size, color, or quantity. Clarice Burgoyne is running for the governor of Oregon. Oregon will have its first lady governor as the latest news of the election was that she will win by a landslide. Eugene Swanson is a professor at the University of Washington and is known for his lectures and books on the up-to-date Chemistry. With this good news I leave the thoughts of my classmates. Knowing they have made a successful life for themselves during the ten years that have elasped since we parted from school. Now I must get back to my mansion on Long Beach. 10 Marjorie Boyd Junior BACK ROW; SECOND ROW; FtRST ROW; Left to Right: Don Zifka, Mr. Donald Brown. Kenny Gallagher. Ken Haverly, Velma Harper. In 1946, twenty-two green Freshmen started their struggle toward the top. After three days of initation by the upper classmen we were a part of the high school student body. Some of our boys and girls took part in activities such as volleyball, basketball, and softball. At the start of our Sophomore year we had fourteen classmates. All of the new pupils who were here have moved away. Those who participated in athletics were Ardeth Aikins, Evelyn Bates, Doris Gilbreath, Wyatt Hendricks, and Ken Haverly. At the close of the year we were looking forward to being considered as upper classmen. Here we are in our Junior year. We are now upper classmen and take our positions more seriously. The new pupils who joined us in our Junior year are: Daris Reynolds, coming from Texas; Rosie Arena, from California; Gene Buckley, from Oakland; and Harry Bushnell, from Days Creek. Again we are proud of our athletic achievement. Doris Gilbreath, Ardeth Aikins, and Velma Harper were on the volleyball team. Wyatt Hendrick and Ken Haverly were on the first string basketball team, while Don Zifka, Kenny Gallagher, and Gene Buckley were subs. Wyatt Hendrick, Ken Haverly, and Gene Buckley were on the football first team while Kep Gallagher and Don Zifka were substitutes. Here Come Charlie was the play given by our class this year. Ten of the students participated in the play, and it was a success. This year’s candidate for carnival queen was Priscilla Pruner, and her escort was Don Zifka. The Junior-Senior Banquet was held on the evening of May 6, at the Guild Hall. A very delicious banquet was served by some of the ladies of the Eastern Star. After that, dancing was the main entertainment of the evening. The evening proved to be one of the highlights of the year. We are now looking forward to becoming the high and mighty.Seniors of 50. 12 o BACK ROW; THIRD ROW; SECOND ROW; Ft PST ROW: Left to Right: Donald U«r«nc«, Bob Van Doran. Warren Carroll, Robert Situ. In the fall of 1947, in the month of September, thirteen green Freshmen entered the ground of the Riddle High School. This year we lost two freshies in the first semester and gained one in the second semester. We survived the razzing of the upper classmen and the initiation by the Sophomores. At the end of our first term there remained with us the remembrance of past days and with great encouragement to become Seniors. In the year of '48 we entered the Riddle High School as a group of thirteen, with the following, new in our ranks: Doris Hollingsworth from Jacksonville, Oregon, Betty Wagoner from Indiana, Isa Macdonald from Scotland, Jean Renhard from Colton, Oregon, Thomas Scott from Oklahoma, and Neal Lamphear from Aberdeen, Washington. In the first semester of the same year we lost Thomas Scott who went back to Oklahoma. We have been active in all of the activities of the high school this year. We will try our best to do better next year as Juniors. 14 CARNIVAL On the evening of November 5, 1949, a capacity crowd gathered in the gym for the second annual school carnival which was opened by several boxing matches. As people visited the many different booths, they were showered with confetti and nudged by balloons. Some of the booths enjoyed were the fish pond, telegram, country store, dart throw, fleece ball, and, of course, the most frequented one---the food booth. Many valuable prizes were raffled off during the course of the evening. The important event of the evening was the coronation ceremony, when George Vaughn, escort, crowned Barbara Mealer, of the Freshman class, Queen of the carnival. Her princesses and their escorts were Laurel Zumwalt with Don Riddle, of the Senior class; Priscilla Pruner with Don Zifka, of the Junior class; and Doris Hollingsworth with Albert Hausotter of the Sophomore class. FRESHMAN INITIATION Freshman initiation took place on October 29, 1948. They had to wear old clothes which made you wonder who they were. As usual the girls had to wear old coveralls and a very becoming necklace of onions. The Sophomores were all equipped with paddles so the Freshmen did just what the Sophomores told them to do. The boys wore gunny sack skirts and mother’s high heel slippers. After all was over that day, they were given a party by the Sophomores Monday night, November 1, 1948. SHAMROCK CLUB SPONSORED SKATING PARTY On Monday evening of January 17, 1949, the Shamrock Club of R. H. S. sponsored a skating party at Artlees Skateway, which most of the Riddle students attended. They had most of the regular skating, although, some of the boys and girls showed their brilliance by doing specialities that sometimes ended on the floor. Some were really experts on skates while others tried for the first time and found it wasn’t so easy as it looked. Almost all of the couples tried their luck in the Grand March. To our surprise, both Coach and Mrs. Brown did very nicely on skates! Our fun ended at 9: 0 P. M. after a delightful but bruising evening! 16 JUNIOR PLAY The Junior class of “49 gave a three-act farce comedy on April 29, entitled Here Comes Charlie by Jay Tobias. Here Comes Charlie” was about a young man of twenty-three who thought he was adopting a three year old boy named Charlie. Charlie, however, turned out to be a seventeen year old girl. The play was directed by Mr. K. Wilson and Mr. D. Brown. The cast was: Nora Malone..........Cook at the Elliott home. Officer Tim McGrill..........Nora's sweetheart. With a large crowd attending, the Seniors did their best to entertain the audience with jokes and songs befitting the occasion. The minstrel employed all the Seniors and was a success due to the capable direction of Arthur Brown, class advisor, and co-operation of the Senior class. ONE ACT PLAYS Four one-act plays were given on April 1, by the students of the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth grades. They were very successful with a large attendance from the townspeople. 17 football STANDING: Loft to Right: Rtchord Rit .mon, Koany GolUghcr, Don 7ilk .
