Forensics Portray Facets of Speech Having captured a third place trophy in state competition, Nancy Thun delivers her oratorical declamation. Forensics or individual speech competition has been quite rewarding and enjoyable for many Richwoods students this year. It improves speaking techniques and skills along with instilling a school spirit and providing a chance for partici- pants to meet other individuals interested in this area. They were under the close supervision of four Richwoods teachers, Mrs. Betsy Barhorst, Mrs. Sara Drew, Mr. David Hamacher, and Mr. Charles Rolinski. Forensics includes a broad variety of speaking areas. They are after dinner speaking, extemporaneous, serious play read- ing, humorous play reading, monologue, original oration, oratorical declamation, radio speaking, prose and poetry. The RHS speech team attended a great number of tourna- ments competing with students from ten to sixty schools. Richwoods also hosted a novice tournament. Placing first in district and sectional competition on the varsity level were Nancy Thun in oratorical declamation and Debbie Glatz in serious reading. Receiving second place in district competi- tion was the contest play. The Romance of the Willow Pat- tern. 68 Debbie Glatz aids sub-varsity speech team members in hopes of guiding them to a possible trophy.

Whether one takes the pro or con of an issue, hard work and dedication is a must for good work in the field of debate. Our debaters carried those traits with them as they won first place in the Mid-State Nine and many high ranking titles in the other tournaments. The debate club consists of five varsity debaters, seven sub-varsity and eight novice debaters. All work was under the direction of Mr. David Hamacher and Mr. Charles Rolinski. Mike Thompson and Richard Sailer were awarded this state trophy at New Trier. SUB-VARSITY DEBATE. Row . Greg Baumann. Tom Cottingham. Tom Bicdcrbcck. Jim Wetckam. Row 2: Chuck Rock. Beth Steinberg.
