THIS IS OUR STORY AT RICHWOODS IN THE BEGINNING FOREWORD Richwoods Community High School 6301 N. University β P.O. Box 6 Peorio Heights, llinois Our story at Richwoods had its begin- ning only a few years ago. We opened our doors to the first student body of Rich- woods Community High School in Septem- ber of 1957. However, our story certainly had begun much before this when the citizens of our community had the insight and desire to want to provide the best possible high school education for the stu- dents in our district. In addition to working diligently and laboriously to provide the finest physical facilities possible, the Board of Education employed an administrative staff and fac- ulty equal to none. Superintendent Fred C. McDavid, a well known administrator in the field of educa- tion in the state of Illinois and the nation, has in an outstanding manner led our school to succeed in preparing our students for the chppters in their life which follow. Our excellent reputation is known from coast to coast. This particular volume of the story of Richwoods is especially important to our current graduating class. This class is the first graduating class to have entered Rich- woods Community High School as fresh- men and complete foUr years here. We are proud of you and extend to you. Class of 1961, our finest wishes for your suc- cess in whatever coreer you may choose. It is our sincere hope that everyone en- joys the chapters which follow in portray- ing the story of Richwoods. We feel everyone in Richwoods Community High School District 312 is a part of our story. EXCALIBUR STAFF 1961 Our Story Begins; We Open Our Doors β September 1957. Endres President Mr. Ralph Hoerr Mr. Williom Lowery Mr. Wheeler McDougal District Treasurer BOARD OF EDUCATION Mrs. George Meyer, Jr. Secretary Our Board of Education Pauses From Their Busy Schedule. This is the fourth year of operation of the Richwoods Community High School. During these four years we have seen not only an expansion in the number of students gradu- ated each year but also an expansion in the faculty and facilities. The willingness of the people of this community to provide financial support to pay good teachers and build an adequate school has been gratifying to all concerned. The bond issue money recently voted upon favorably, and all the money previously spent, will be justified only if the product produced β a good secondary education in sound bodies and minds β is achieved. America's future is secure when education does not fail. Dr. Fred C. Endres President of the Board of Education Mr. L. Edward Roby Mr. Arthur Szold Mr. Henry Triebel Mr. Charles Ullrick School Attorney TO MISS CURRAN: Richwoods Community High School opened its doors to the first student body in September 1957. Many hours of prepa- ration, thought, work, and endeavor were done before the opening day. Any important chapter in the story of Richwoods is a person who spent much time and effort in formulating policies and co-ordinating activities of R.C.H.S. She has con- tinued in this vein for the past 4 years. No task is too great for her,- yet nothing is too menial for her if it is for the gen- eral betterment of Richwoods. As a specialist in college counseling, she has aided many stu- dents in selecting a college suited to them, and has also given much time to the student going into business or industry fol- lowing graduation. Organization of testing programs, job placement, and scholarship planning are only examples of her many activities. Many a student has found a listening ear and an understand- ing smile when he or she has sought her help. This person's educational pursuits are international in scope. Holding of- fices in an international and state educational organizations, along with membership in national organizations are among her educational achievements. No, the story of Richwoods could not be told without a special tribute to this person. We the 1961 EXCALIBUR staff dedicate this volume to you. Miss Helen Curran, Director of Guidance and Dean of Girls. 11 SUPERINTENDENT FRED C. McDAVID Mr. McDavid pauses from his busy schedule. Mr. and Mrs. McDavid enjoy the Homecoming Dance. O R S Four years ago in 1957 we, as the 1961 graduating class, came to Richwoods Community High School as the first freshman group to enter its portals and become a chapter in the story of Richwoods. Our academic pursuits were many, and it did not take us long as freshies to realize that we were being given an outstanding education by our community. Board of Education, administration, faculty, and staff. Our chapter had only begun; we soon found ourselves sopho- mores, and then juniors. Only too rapidly it was September 1960, and we were beginning our senior year. Our pages were growing rapidly. We found ourselves winning first prize in the Homecom- ing float competition. Many of us attended such career-planning activities as college day. Campus Capers Party, Suzie-Secretary Party. Some of us became members of National Honor Society. Many of us received scholarships to numerous colleges and uni- versities. The biggest social event this year was the Senior Dinner Dance. We find ourselves after completing four years here at Richwoods self-assured that we are completing one of the finest and sub- stantial educations in the nation. We are prepared to meet the future, be it in college or the business world. Our chapter is not finished; we shall continue as Adult Knights of our community and strive to give future Richwoods students as fine an education as we have had. This year under the leadership of President Lesley Swords and Vice-President Bill Geurin, many worthy service projects and social events were sponsored for the benefit of the student body. Elena Tondelli, this year's foreign exchange student, was sponsored by our student council. At Christmas our student council led a food collection drive and baskets of food for the needy were distributed. The student council also played a vital role in the bond-issue campaign. Other service projects were sponsored by council throughout the year. In addition they were active members of the Mid-State 8 Student Council.
