Miss Curran plans and directs the activities and functions of the Guidance Department. Mrs. Mary Brown, Girls’ Counselor, this year aided the Freshman and Sophomore girls in planning their program and also helped them with any personal problem they might have. Next year Mrs. Brown will counsel Sophomore and Junior giris- Mr. Donald Henderson, Counselor for the Freshman and Sophomore boys this year planned their academic program and also aided these boys in solving any personal problems they might have encountered. Mr. Henderson also took care of the vocational and occupational materials in the Guidance Office. Mr. Henderson will counsel Sophomore and Junior boys next year. Mrs. Ruth Hughes, Girls’ Counselor, during the past year assisted the Junior and Senior girls this year in their personal program planning, college and vocational counseling, personal counseling, took care of college catalogues for student ref- erence, and bulletin boards. For the 1960-61 school year Mrs. Hughes will counsel Freshman and Senior girls. Mr. Claude Cunningham, Boys’ Counselor, helped the Junior and Senior Boys this year with programming and in per- sonal college, and vocational counseling. Mr. Cunningham planned the testing program for the Guidance Department. Next fall Mr. Cunningham will serve as Freshman and Senior Boys’ Counselor. Richwoods Community High School’s Guidance program actually begins on the eight grade level. When an incoming Freshman is in the eighth grade, a battery of tests is administered to him. Recommendations from his eighth grade teachers are also considered in curriculum placement. The incoming Freshman student comes to school in the spring with his parents to register for the classes. In a personal interview with a Rich- woods Community High School faculty member or counselor the student and his parents receive information which enables him to register for a program of studies best suited to his inter- ests, needs, abilities, and goals. Another phase of the Richwoods Guidance Program is the annual college night. Fifty-two colleges and universities sent col- lege admission counselors to attend Richwoods College Day and Night. These representatives discussed with students and parents college costs, scholarships, curriculum, entrance requirements, and college life in general. A Susie Secretary Party and College Capers Dinner are activities which are planned for the Senior girls. One half hour per day is set aside for a group guidance study hall period. During this period a student might meet in a group to receive information concerning colleges and universities, vo- cational infonnation, armed service information, results of occu- pational or interest inventory testing, or perhaps the student may meet during this Guidance Period to learn more effective way to study and improve his study habits. We are fortunate in having new and improved physical fa- cilities in our Guidance Department this year, and each member of the Guidance Staff has his individual private office which he may use for private interviews with students, parents, and teachers. All in all we feel that our Guidance Department here at Rich- woods Community High School, under the very capable and excellent leadership of our Guidance Director, Miss Curran, is one of the finest anywhere. Our Guidance Department is sup- plementing and enriching the curriculum in preparing better citizens of tomorrow and a better world of today. MR. CLAUDE D. CUNNINGHAM Boys’ Counselor MR DON HENDERSON Boys’ Counselor
