With untiring energy he has advised and counseled the student body to better understanding of themselves and the world in which they live. Whether it is 7 A.M. or 11 P.M.; whether it is an administrative situa- tion, student council work, a Dean of Boys’ problem, or a student or teacher wishing to speak to him, he is eager and ready to give of his time. His energy is perpetual along with his enthusiasm. Under his guidance the student council has executed its responsibilities for the betterment of the school. He has aided in its Mid-State Eight affiliation, social functions, and the American Field Ser- vice Student Exchange Program. He has given unselfishly of his time and effort in helping Richwoods obtain the high recognition it has achieved in the past three years. You are a fine Knight. In appreciation we now dedicate this book to you, Mr. RICHARD ERZEN. Ready advice when it is needed. General Conference Room — Meeting place of both Student Council and Board of Education. EDWARD ROBY Mr. CHARLES B. ULLRICK Attorney Our Board of Education The Board of Education has endeavored for the past eight years to make possible the educational facilities and the educational program which you now have. Al- though this has been a long and arduous task, it is only the beginning. Next year’s freshman class of five hundred students will be the beginning of a cycle which will bring the enrollment of the Richwoods Community High School to two thousand students within four years. The members of the Board of Education will continue their efforts to maintain the quality of education as they have established it in the past, and will appreciate the counsel and advice of anyone living in the District. 12 MR. RICHARD ERZEN Assistant Superintendent and Dean of Boys 0 u R A D M I N I S T R A T O R S MISS HELEN CURRAN Director of Guidance and Dean of Girls MR LEON H PERLEY Business Manager Our administrators worked diligently to gain for Richwoods Community High School a place of respect and excellence in the community, state, and nation. Now, this year, our administra- tion was faced with the task of maintaining this position and moving on to more glorious heights. With the Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Richard Erzen, aid- ing him, Mr. Fred McDavid has directed this project and has spent many long hours for the betterment of R.C.H.S. Not only does Mr. Erzen aid Mr. McDavid with many administrative tasks, but he is also kept busy as advisor of the Student Council and as Dean of Boys. He has done a fine job. Miss Helen Curran, Director of Guidance and Dean of Girls, directed the entire guidance program and organized numerous activities, such as Campus Capers, Susie Secretary, Merit Scholarship Testing, Hall Monitors, and many other school functions. She too has done an efficient and excellent job. Mr. Leon Perley, Business Manager, very ably has handled his job in this field. The various business contracts and the innumerable tasks connected with the business side of Richwoods Community High School, including the direction of the cafeteria, buses, and maintenance has given him a very busy year. For their diligence in accomplishing their never ending duties in making Richwoods the school that it is, we thank our admin- istrators. 14 MISS HELEN CURRAN Director of Guidance and Dean of Girls Miss Helen Curran, Director of Guidance and Dean of Girls is director and central co-ordinator of the Guidance Pro- gram at Richwoods Community High School. Miss Curran plans and directs the activities and functions of the Guidance Department. Mrs. Mary Brown, Girls’ Counselor, this year aided the Freshman and Sophomore girls in planning their program and also helped them with any personal problem they might have. Next year Mrs. Brown will counsel Sophomore and Junior giris- Mr. Donald Henderson, Counselor for the Freshman and Sophomore boys this year planned their academic program and also aided these boys in solving any personal problems they might have encountered. Mr. Henderson also took care of the vocational and occupational materials in the Guidance Office. Mr. Henderson will counsel Sophomore and Junior boys next year. Mrs. Ruth Hughes, Girls’ Counselor, during the past year assisted the Junior and Senior girls this year in their personal program planning, college and vocational counseling, personal counseling, took care of college catalogues for student ref- erence, and bulletin boards. For the 1960-61 school year Mrs. Hughes will counsel Freshman and Senior girls. Mr. Claude Cunningham, Boys’ Counselor, helped the Junior and Senior Boys this year with programming and in per- sonal college, and vocational counseling. Mr. Cunningham planned the testing program for the Guidance Department. Next fall Mr. Cunningham will serve as Freshman and Senior Boys’ Counselor. Richwoods Community High School’s Guidance program actually begins on the eight grade level. When an incoming Freshman is in the eighth grade, a battery of tests is administered to him. Recommendations from his eighth grade teachers are also considered in curriculum placement. The incoming Freshman student comes to school in the spring with his parents to register for the classes. In a personal interview with a Rich- woods Community High School faculty member or counselor the student and his parents receive information which enables him to register for a program of studies best suited to his inter- ests, needs, abilities, and goals. Another phase of the Richwoods Guidance Program is the annual college night. Fifty-two colleges and universities sent col- lege admission counselors to attend Richwoods College Day and Night. These representatives discussed with students and parents college costs, scholarships, curriculum, entrance requirements, and college life in general. A Susie Secretary Party and College Capers Dinner are activities which are planned for the Senior girls. One half hour per day is set aside for a group guidance study hall period. During this period a student might meet in a group to receive information concerning colleges and universities, vo- cational infonnation, armed service information, results of occu- pational or interest inventory testing, or perhaps the student may meet during this Guidance Period to learn more effective way to study and improve his study habits. We are fortunate in having new and improved physical fa- cilities in our Guidance Department this year, and each member of the Guidance Staff has his individual private office which he may use for private interviews with students, parents, and teachers. All in all we feel that our Guidance Department here at Rich- woods Community High School, under the very capable and excellent leadership of our Guidance Director, Miss Curran, is one of the finest anywhere. Our Guidance Department is sup- plementing and enriching the curriculum in preparing better citizens of tomorrow and a better world of today. MR. CLAUDE D. Seniors Three years ago, we Senior Knights came to R. C. H. S. as sophomores and united. Our first task was to elect our officers and student council members. Our first officers were Clyde Van Ant- werp, President; Ernie Bschor, Vice-President; Sally Spencer, Secretary; and Dave Van Lanen, Treasurer. Our capable sponsor was Mr. John- son. Our junior year we once again elected class officers. Those chosen to serve us were Duke Zeller, President; Bobette Furst, Vice-President; Sally Spencer, Secretary; and Susan Leach, Treasurer. Our sponsors were Mrs. Richardson and Mr. Barton. We had several tasks that year including the Junior-Senior Prom, which was fab- ulous. All the juniors believe the prom was the best yet. We also selected our class rings, which most of us now wear proudly. Once again, in our senior year, we selected our officers. This years officers were Jim Tamkin, President; Bob Rodes, Vice-President; Sally Spencer, Secretary; and Penny Forman, Treas- urer. Mrs. Lawlis and Mr. Korgie were our spon- sors. Those of us planning to further our education attended College Day and Night under the guid- ance of Miss Curran and Mr. Fr en and Cam- pus Capers under the guidance of Miss Curran. Those of us planning to enter the business field attended the “Susie Secretary Pot Luck.” As the year progressed we looked forward to the Senior Dinner-Dance and graduation, which were both very successful and wonderful. I am sure that in the future all the seniors will return to their alma mater to relive their high school days. To our fine faculty, we seniors say “Thanks” for the understanding and help they have given us. 30 Queen Sally! ADKINS, EDWARD O. Doesn't it hurt Sharon? 65 Pete Meachum (March 5, 1942—May 30, 1959) LIFE AND DEATH So he died for his faith. That is fine. More than most of us do. But, say, can you add to that line That he lived for it, too? In his death he bore witness at last As a martyr to the truth. Did his life do the same in the past, From the days of his youth? It is easy to die. Men have died For a wish or a whim — From bravado or passion or pride. Was it harder for him? But to live — every day to live out All the truth that he dreamt. While his friends met his conduct with doubt, And the world w'ith contempt. Was it thus that he plodded ahead, Never turning aside? Then we'll talk of the life that he lived. Never mind how he died. Junior Class The Juniors have finally reached that wonderful year of the Prom and class rings. The class, under the guidance of our two advisors, Mrs. Margaret Ellen Rich- ardson and Mr. Dale Holloway, has oper- ated the concession stands for both foot- ball and basketball games. Our Junior Play, “Ten Little Indians,” which was capably directed by Mr. Donald Marine, proved to be a tremendous suc- cess. The Junior Class was led very capably by our officers; Jackie Page, President, Sandy Hughes, Vice-President, Susan Mathis, Secretary', and Mike Leiner, Treas- urer. Well, next year is our last year, and we will be proud to say that we arc the first class to complete our entire four years of high school at Richwoods Community High School. 69 ✓ Ingrid Alameda Nancy Applegate Kenneth Barber Gloria Abner Judith Adams How much are my fees? Freshman Class In September of 1959, the halls of Richwoods Community High School were filled with 343 eager Freshmen, anticipating the coming year. During this past year, we have had many new experiences and many firsts. Among these were our first high school football game and the thrill of working on our class float. Student Council members and class officers were chosen with care. We all appreciated the help our class sponsor Mr. Philip Becker, gave us. Now as our first year comes to a close, we look forward to the next three wonderful years at Richwoods. 107 Cynthia Adams Annette Albright Richard Allcock Charles Asher Sharon Ashley Katherine Austin John Alley Sandra Allison Connie Anderson Judi Anton Lee Applegate Shelia Bachtel Robin Backus Joe Bailey Lawrence Ball Kenneth Barber Judy Bernard Richard Bickel Richard Bittner Suzanne Blair Terry Barnes Gayland Barnes Randall Bartlett Mary Belfcr Diane Bowker Barry Briggs Sharon Brissendcn Diane Britten Doris Brumbaugh Pat Brummer 108 Douglas Cassidy David Conn John Crystal Bob Cockficld Ruth Davis Julie Dixon Eva Casto Kathryn Cation William Churchill Lcannc Clemons Virginia Close Richard Cohen Ronald Coleman Colette Corbin David Cordes Jerry Cottingham Jim Coulton Wilburt Cranford Shelia Creighton Jerry Creel Mike Dailey Sandy Danlcy I-ois Danzer Margo Davis Randy Dawson Craig Dean Bill Desmond Gaye DeTrempc Edward Dickinson David Dilts Lillie Dishman Deanna Downing Rebecca Doyle Pat Drugmand Richard Duncan Mike Dyer Nancy Easton Stan Ellwood 9 n 109 Pat Enriquez Sandra Errion Mike Erwin Sharon Ethridge Barb Evans Ronnie Evans Altheia Farney Walter Feeser Barb Fuller Larry Gann Paul Gardner Kendra Garrett William Gaskill Marta Gaskins Mike Friedlander Gregory Fulford -..i Linda Gauss Linda Gebhardt Rosanne Geils John Gentry Mike German Jane Giebelhausen Roberta Gilbertt Lorraine Gillespie David Grandcll Mary Grawcy William Grawey Barb Gray Judy Gray Margaret Green Robin Greenwood Russ Greenwood 110 ■■1 Chery Gutierrez Stanley Hafley Gweneth Hall Karen Hall Elizabeth Hargadine Ruth Harris Judy Harrison Richard Hart Phyllis Heggie Henry Gordon Janet Hensley Robert Hindert Pamela Hudson Sandra Huff Genevieve Huffman John Hughes Q u «tt 0« «y Amu 111 Richard Hoadley Sheryl Hoffman Julie Honnold Linda Hulett Gloria Humphrey Cathy Imes Sharon Isom Allana Janes Judy Jacobs Carol Jcncson W f Bonnie Hazzard I Pete Huber ' J Kristin Jacobson Connie Jcneson Kathy Johnson Barbara Johnson William Johnson Dean Kaetzel Marianne Kastncr Bennett Katz Rene Knapp Steve Kochi Janet Krisman Dennis Lipp Mary Liston Linda Loomis Sandra McKinney Jo Maharry Joe Maharry James Mantz Kay Marion Dennis Martin Cheryl Johnston Sharon Jones Sherry Jones Marie Joseph Patricia Junker Donatus Kelch Charles Kcltner Delbert Kendall Phyllis Kendall Barbara Ketcham Constance Lamm Jim Lamprecht Cheryl Lane Pat Lindsay Pamela Lindstrom Elizabeth Louison Patricia Lynn Denis McCann Lillian McCoy Kathleen McGrath Sharon Maxwell James Mces 112 Joan Moredock Stephen Moreland Pat Moore Robert Mueller Robert Moushon Joyce Newell Charles Nibbelin Judy Norman James Oakcy Sharon Oberholtzer George Piper Sheryl Planck Pat Poland Rosemary Powell Sherry Powley Tena Powley David Prince Douglas Proctor Carl Rager John Reardon Charles Reeve Frances Reinholtz Peggy Rice Pamela Richart Jerry Richter Jim Riddle 113 Richard Rieger William Roth Carl Samuelson Deanna Smith Barry Switzer LaDonna Roberts Gary Robertson Randy Rodes Susan Roland Lana Rose Stacey Ross Lee Rosser Gary Schneider Howard Seaver Lucilee Selvy Dave Semlow Donna Sheets Bob Shimmin Melvin Sicks Bob Steiner Bill Stevenson Gary Stiers Jerry Stuart Bill Sudow John Steele Theresa Stephens George Traicoff Jim VanLanen v t Y Rosemary Williams Margaret Wundcr Cheryl Tribble Bonnie Trotter Roncll Tucker KenTullctt Phillis Turner Joan Ulcvitch Susan Vichmcyer Deborah Walker Linda Wallace Gary Warner Joann Wascm Sue Welton Mary White Mary White Bob White Joe Whitehouse Deraid Williams Ken Williams Jim Wilson Bob Wilson Bob Wilson Joe Wittmer Bob Woolley Linda Woracr Tom Wyman Mary Wyss Bcrnie Young Jim Zweifel Freshmen Not Pictured Terry Benson Mike Braten Fred Schccl 115 Activities TOM McKUNE CAROLYN DEAMES Secretary JOEL SUFFIELD President As President of Student Council this year, Joel Suffield has illustrated the many fine qualities that obtained the Presidency for him last spring. Richwood Student Council The members of the Student Council, the stu- dent representative body of our school, have con- sidered it a great honor to have been elected by the Richwoods students this past year. The Knights of Richwoods have put their faith in the Student Council by selecting these people to represent and serve them. These students must have high scho- lastic standings and unusual and outstanding characteristics because they set the example of our school. The members of this student governing body, guided by Mr. Erzcn, sponsor, and Miss Curran, assistant sponsor, and Mr. Cunningham, assistant sponsor, have planned many of the activi- ties and social events of the year. They scheduled the Christmas and Spring Dances, the After-Game Dances, and the Vice Versa Dances, the Home- coming celebrations, which included the dance, the parade, and the football game, all of which were a great success. All of the credit for the world clothing drive, and the food baskets project, and the clean up week, goes to these fine students. These people have also taken care of the selling of the school supplies, the printing of the student directory, and the lost and found department. This year we sponsored a foreign exchange student Rudy Helbling which was very profitable and enjoyable. The Richwoods Knights have been very proud of their Student Council this past year. The girls have developed poise, rhythm, and coordination, and have learned marching formations and pre- cision dancing. 1959-60 School Life at R. C. H. S. The Knights also de- feated four of the Mid-State Eight conference members to gain a 4th place in Mid-State Eight competition.
