She demanded attention during explanations; she responded thoughtfully to questions. She asked, What do you think is the right thing for you t« do? She encouraged the hesitant with praise; she forgave the repentant with a smile. The recalcitrant she censured with sternness; the successful she challenged with new goals. Remembering that Mrs. Matlack expect- ed the best each student could do, the Tigrtrax Staff, in dedicating to her the very last edition of Tigrtrax, confers on her the highest honor it has to bestow. So reads the plaque presented to Lucille Mallett Powers on Recognition Day by Stu- dent Council President Ed Olson. With all the forces at her command -- intelligence, knowledge, skill, experience, and vision -- Mrs. Powers has efficiently and decisively tackled the problem of limited equipment and has provided students of Richwood High School with high standards, urging them to competence in the commercial field. This year in the State Scholarship Tests in bookkeeping, Pat Hoffman took first place in the state; in 1948 Wilma Thompson Ross took second place in the state; in 1949 Gail Simmons scored very high. It is the exception that one of her students places below the 80th percentile in the state. Neither may time be wasted nor mistakes be endured when such high objectives are to be obtained. Rare is the week that doesn't bring extra demands to produce programs, sell tickets, or supervise those who do. These gratuitous responsibilities she accepts oblig- ingly and discharges competently. For such services rendered throughout her 17 years on the staff, both the F.H.A. and the F.F.A. have granted her honorary memberships in their chapters. When she accepted the honor, she reveal- ed her accustomed modesty with this state- ment: Just as no teacher is considered outstanding by every student, each teacher is considered outstanding by some students. 7 % KELLY THOMAS DRAKE VICE-PRESIDENT Football 1,2,4; Cross Country 3; Basketball 1,2,3,4; Intramurals 4; Varsity ”R 3,4; Class Vice-Presi- dent 1,2,4; Class Student Council 3; Scholarship Team 1,2,4; National Honor Society 3,4; Annual Staff 3; Boys' Chorus 1,4; Mixed Chorus 4; Latin Club 1,2; Senior Play 4. GWENYTH WELLER Secretary DICK MINTER Treasurer JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS It is very hard to put into words the feeling that comes with being a junior. The fact that we have finally become upperclassmen is only a small part of this. Pride that we have successfully completed three years of our high-school careers is another. Wistfully we ponder the fact that we have but one year left. However, if our senior year is as successful as our junior year, we shall have no fear of the future. 25 P. Adams C. Anderson S. Beery S. By loyally supporting our cheer- leaders and by participating in band, interscholastic sports and intramurals, we became an active part of the school. Although we got off to a poor start grade-wise, we have now discovered the importance of studying and are ready to continue the final three years of the rugged road that leads to graduation in '68. 35 C. Few people even know that the team plays! However, the thing often forgotten is that the reserve scrubs of today are the varsity stars of tomorrow. One long to be remembered for his tremendous efforts as Varsity basketball and foot- ball manager will be Tom Thomas. Baker, Mr. Tuttle CROSS COUNTRY The 1964 Cross Country team showed much improve- ment in their second year as a part of the school's expand- ing athletic program. It takes much stamina to participate in such a fatiguing sport, for the meet consists of a two- mile run. This year's squad fell short of victory only twice in their eight encounters. The schools with which we held exchange meets were Elgin, River Valley, Buckeye Valley, and Delaware Hayes. The 21 boys who participated this year should be commended for a job well done! 47 VARSITY BASKETBALL JIM BLUE RUSS BAKER FRANK CARTER DENNY ROBERTS KELLY DRAKE CRISS SOMERLOT RICK HOFFMAN RON PRATT REX RADER GENE SOMERLOT BILL DENNIS NED CUNNINGHAM NO. 44 NO. 20 NO. 40 NO. 32 NO. 22 NO. 12 NO. 10 NO. 42 NO. 24 NO. 34 NO. 30 NO. 14 48 Row One: M. Rockhold STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the voice of the student body. though not a legislative organization for school policies, it does promote activities that develop co-ordination between the various school clubs as well as foster good citizenship in the individual student. Working on this premise the Council has carried on a busy calendar year. Among its many activities were the initiating of the Student-of-the-Month award, aiding Johnson's War on Poverty, and presenting the Teacher Recognition Award. 55 STUDENTS OF THE MONTH This year the Student Council ini- tiated the STUDENT-OF-THE-MONTH program to honor students of the school who do more than just attend classes; those who make the school a better place for learning and fellowship. Each of the students selected have achieved success in an outstanding way in various fields. Though their achievements vary from leadership to scholarship, each has influenced and aided our school community. All were willing to accept responsibility as well as honors and shall long be remembered at R.H.A. Those seniors selected were Tom Thomas, Pat Hoffman, Terry Rockhold, Ed Olson, and Jo Ann Prichard (not pictured because of date of selection). 56 L. to R.: E. Olson, D. Schrote, C. Martin, J. Educational films and interesting speakers highlighted the clubs' entertainment program. The final edition of Tigrtrax is the result of the tenacious efforts of eight people-each of whom sold ads, secured subscriptions, ran down information, made plans, scrapped them, and tried again; the result of the efforts of people to whom disappointment becomes the threshold to a solution even more satisfactory; the result of the efforts of people who come to grips with reality--not those who mourn for what they'd like and haven't got, but those who accept the challenge of what can be done with what is available. But it took the postgraduate elbow grease and rolled-up-sleeve attack of Editor Dianne Steele and her undaunted cohort Mary Jo Fetter to forge from fragments this, your yearbook-- Tigrtrax 1965. 73 Marian Cochran, Advisor CONCERT RAND Row One: D.
