Juniors Meet Problems of Ibid.'s. Op. Cit.'s. and Bibliographies on Formal Perm Papers. Probably the greatest asset of a human being is his ability to communicate with others. Of all forms of communication— gesture, grimace, touch, sound--the most difficult to master is language because language alone is artificial, a purposeful discipline of accurate identification of thought which must then be couched in terms another may understand. To metamorphose an emotion into an idea requires a wide and an apt vocab- ulary; to express an idea within a sound framework of phrases and clauses re- quires knowledge of sentence structure; to permit a reader free entry into the realm of ideas demands concrete know- ledge of traffic signals—punctuation and capitalization. For these reasons English classes study sentence structure, vocab- ulary, and mechanics. To acquaint themselves with the styles of experts and to the forms suitable to the subject—novel, essay, poetry, drama, bio- graphy—the English classes study lit- erature. Literature, communicating the wisdom wrestled from mankind's attempt to rule the Universe and his half-hearted efforts to control himself, is youth's threshold for understanding life and the door to his own ultimate achievement. We regret that we fumble the key! 29

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT In this modern environment of ours, it is necessary for men to have a basic understanding of the complex forces of the world in which we live; without this knowledge an individual cannot be fully cognigant of the wonders which shape our ever broadening horizons. The field of science has advanced with great strides during the past fifty years. Despite this pro- gress, not much attention has been given to revising the teaching of the basic of ideas in the light of modern developments. It is to be hoped that due to the new school district, we at Richwood High School will be able to expand our methods and ideas to meet up with the modern methods. In order for the student to obtain a broader outlook on the wonders of science, Richwood High School offers courses in general science, biological and zoological science, physiology, chemistry, and physics. These courses are designed to give the student a practical prepara- tion for entry into college or modern society. 30
