National Capitol RICHWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Richwood, Ohio Charlotte DeGood, Editor Kelly Drake, Business Manager —Illustration by Connie Anderson THE UNDELIVERED SPEECH (Conclusion) America today is stronger than ever before. Our adversaries have not aban- doned their ambitions—our dangers have not diminished—our vigilance cannot be relaxed. But now we have the military, the scientific and the economic strength to do whatever must be done for the preservation and promotion of freedom. That strength will never be used in pursuit of aggressive ambitions-- it will always be used in pursuit of peace. It will never be used to promote pro- vocations—it will always be used to pro- mote the peaceful settlement of disputes. We in this country, in this generation. are--by destiny rather than by choice— the watchmen on the walls of world free- dom. We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility-- that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint--and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of peace on earth, goodwill toward men. That must always be our goal—and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength. For as was written long ago: Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” 2 Our 1964 yearbook is published in memory of the 35th President of the United States. Pentagon ENGLISH DEPARTMENT 28 Freshman Faces First Challenge In High School English Juniors Meet Problems of Ibid.'s. Op. Cit.'s. and Bibliographies on Formal Perm Papers. Probably the greatest asset of a human being is his ability to communicate with others. Of all forms of communication— gesture, grimace, touch, sound--the most difficult to master is language because language alone is artificial, a purposeful discipline of accurate identification of thought which must then be couched in terms another may understand. To metamorphose an emotion into an idea requires a wide and an apt vocab- ulary; to express an idea within a sound framework of phrases and clauses re- quires knowledge of sentence structure; to permit a reader free entry into the realm of ideas demands concrete know- ledge of traffic signals—punctuation and capitalization. For these reasons English classes study sentence structure, vocab- ulary, and mechanics. To acquaint themselves with the styles of experts and to the forms suitable to the subject—novel, essay, poetry, drama, bio- graphy—the English classes study lit- erature. Literature, communicating the wisdom wrestled from mankind's attempt to rule the Universe and his half-hearted efforts to control himself, is youth's threshold for understanding life and the door to his own ultimate achievement. We regret that we fumble the key! 29 SCIENCE DEPARTMENT In this modern environment of ours, it is necessary for men to have a basic understanding of the complex forces of the world in which we live; without this knowledge an individual cannot be fully cognigant of the wonders which shape our ever broadening horizons. The field of science has advanced with great strides during the past fifty years. Despite this pro- gress, not much attention has been given to revising the teaching of the basic of ideas in the light of modern developments. It is to be hoped that due to the new school district, we at Richwood High School will be able to expand our methods and ideas to meet up with the modern methods. In order for the student to obtain a broader outlook on the wonders of science, Richwood High School offers courses in general science, biological and zoological science, physiology, chemistry, and physics. These courses are designed to give the student a practical prepara- tion for entry into college or modern society. 30 Freshmen Probe Myster- ies of Universe in General Science. Biology Students Explore Wonders of Plant and Animal Kingdoms in Classroom Study. 31 MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT A mathmatically disciplined mind is one which can analyze and solve most any situation. The average citizen competing in life is not without benefit by being able to face any of life's problems from an analytical approach. The high school al- ge braes and geometries provide a basis for such a background. The study and mastery of algebra. geometry, trigonometry is a must for students expecting to matriculate to more advanced scientific studies. Algebraic manipulations, geometric basic concepts, and trigonometric calculations all pro- vide a broad base upon which practically all science studies revolve. In our modern society the emphasis is scientific, and the curriculum math plays the major role. 32 33 Knowledge of Mathematics—An Important Part of Each Student's Life LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The study of foreign languages gives the student, in many ways, very direct assistance in improving his ability to speak, read, and write better English. The close connection between the grammar of the foreign language and English grammar provides a way for the student to gain a better understanding of grammatical principles in English, thus leading to his speaking and writing English more carefully. Improving his command of English will make him more efficient in any calling. The study of foreign languages will help him to understand the classical names and allusions which abound in our literature and even in our everyday read- ing of newspapers and magazines. A knowledge of the derivation of words in English from foreign languages enables the student to understand the meanings of many unfamiliar English words and to better appreciate the real meaning of many familiar words. The study of foreign languages has disciplinary'' or training” values. In studying a foreign language, a student develops a capacity for orderly procedure, for accuracy, and for thoroughness. These qualities he can then apply in the study of other subjects and in the everyday affairs of life. 34 HISTORY DEPARTMENT The community, parents, and faculty at Richwood High School have co-operated to offer a strong foundation on which to build solid, happy, personal lives and careers anywhere in the United States. They cannot guarantee this same type of foundation as a citizen of the world. The cornerstone was placed thousands of years ago before the time of recorded events and the beginning of history. Each generation in history has placed its build- ing blocks on those of its ancestors. Sometimes the building blocks were cemented carefully in place as during the time of Solon in Ancient Greece so that the next generation could build a strong civilization on this firm base. But at other times the blocks were thrown carelessly in place as each pursued his own selfish desires and interests. The weight of the next generations building along these same crooked lines caused the walls to topple like that of the Roman Civilization, leaving the world in the Dark Ages. This same thing has happened to a nation in one generation when it tried to build a mighty nation on one weak little principle of hate and ignored the time proven laws--personal liberty, repre- sentative government, and respect for each individual—for stability and strength in building. So, it is up to this generation to use as tools the knowledge of past weaknesses and strengths to make its row of blocks straight and strong and therefore make the world a place in which we all shall be proud. 36 Juniors Explore the Develop- ment of a Great Nation-- America Senior Dan Kyle Gains Practi- cal Knowledge of American Government in County Gov- ernment Day Activities at Marysville. 37 COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT Business education aims to prepare students for vocational work in business occupations as well as to aid in the general education of all students. The guidance counselor attempts to base the student's high school program with his needs. With this goal in mind, Richwood High School offers business courses in general business, bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, salesmanship, business law and office practice. These courses are used by each student in their young adult life and in their business life in years to come. 38 39 VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT The Future Farmers of America is the national organization of, by, and for farm boys studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools which operate under the provisions of the National Vocational Education Acts. It is an educational, non-profit, non-political farm-youth organization of voluntary membership, designed to develop agricultural leadership, character, thrift, scholarship, co- operation, and citizenship. Members must be enrolled in vocational agriculture to become eligible for membership. They may retain their membership upon-graduation from high school until they reach the age of 21. The FFA is an intra-curricular activity, having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum— vocational agriculture. Among other things, members learn through active participation, conducting and taking part in meetings, speaking in public, buying and selling co-operatively, solving their own problems, financing themselves, and assuming civic responsibilities. The FFA motto is: Learning to Do Doing to Earn Earning to Live Living to Serve. 40 INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Industrial Arts is the part of the edu- cational program which provides oppor- tunities to explore, identify, and develop occupational and avocational interests through study and experiences of planning, experimenting, and constructing; to better understand and appreciate our industrial culture. Industrial Arts has passed through two well defined periods of growth. The first was Manual Training where the empha- sis was on hand skill, chiefly in wood- working. The second was Manual Arts where the emphasis, while still on skill, was extended to include the making of both useful and well-designed articles. Industrial Arts today includes all of the old that was good and broadens out from the limitation of an emphasis upon manual skill alone to an enriched conception where subject matter is selected and organized from a comprehensive study of industry and technology. 41 HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT Senior Students Master the Practical Art of Cooking in Home Economics Classes Practical Know- ledge in Home Furnish- ings Is Important Pre- paration for the Future 42 FOOTBALL FIRST ROW: Manager T. The Tigers came on strong at the end of the season by playing interesting basketball after the Christmas Vacation. The tournament turned out to be a heart- break trail for the Tigers and fans as the team won their first round game from Danville 81 to 61. Galion Northmor upset the Tigers 34 to 45 the next night to net the Richwood campaign with a seasonal mark of 9-10. 50 RESERVE Standing: Coach Tuttle, J. Blue, J. Kinikin,S.Case, R. Rader, B. The record of victories and losses doesn't tell the story, as many of the games in the loss column were two and three point defeats. The squad was made up of boys from the sophomore class and was marked by the equal ability of 13 members. With the exception of a few nights. Coach Tuttle could always rely on a good job to be turned in by the first string and the substitutes. Coach Tuttle remarked that what the boys lacked on the scoreboard, they made up for it during practice; with R. Hoffman, R. Bosse, J. McElroy, B. Dennis, R. Sivey, R. Chapman. desire, dedication and spirit. Some of the highlights of the season were victories over tough Pleasant 33- 30, a 64-22 victory over Delaware St. Marys--a game in which every boy score— and a 54-45 victory over Fairbanks. The most valuable trophy went to Rex Rader who also had the best shooting per- centage. Jim Blue had the best foul shoot- ing percentage of the squad. The boys are eagerly looking to next year's season to improve on this record when most of the boys will move up to the Varsity level of competition. 52 V A R S I T Y Kay Clevenger Pat Kelly Pat Ransome Bonnie McBride BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS KEY TO STUDENT SPIRIT IN TIGER CAGE ACTIVITIES” r- R E S E R V E Pat Peoples Janet Sampson Sheila Ward Pat Hoffman 53 Standing: AlanCowgill, Don Williams, Bernard John Daniels, Jerry Stidhan. This year, the cast produced a comedy entitled The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. The Seniors again achieved suc- cess in their endeavors as they introduced characters and lines to the show. Dean Lindsay was starred as the uproarious Dobie Gillis. He was ably supported by Janet Johnson as Bonnie, Dick Gill as Petey, Dorothy Goddard as Helen, and the Happy Stella Kowolski Schottishe Five, a rolicking group resembling a band. As you probably guessed, Dobie got the girl at the climax, which only goes to prove — All's Fair in Love and War. STANDING: R. Baker, B. Beeney, J. Hamilton, G. Mannasmith, R. Ballinger, R. Rutan, J. This track and field day proved very successful with the Seniors defeating the Freshmen by one point. A picnic was held at the end of the school year. There were outdoor sports, indoor sports, and lots of food. This wrap- ped up this year's G.R.A. program, but the girls plan to better their program and activities in future years to make Richwood High a better school in the intramural field. Salyer, D. Seated: Lee Newman, Judy Allgower, Dianne Steele. The Richwood High School Tiger Band had a very successful year during 1963- 1964. The band enrollment was sixty-two, plus five majorettes and four flag bearers. The band year was begun in August with a month of hard work in preparation for the approaching football season. At the end of August, the band performed two evening concerts at the Richwood Fair. During football season, the band per- formed half-time shows with enthusiasm and skill. The theme shows displayed a variety of melodies and tempos. At the climax of football season, the band began to prepare for the spring con- cert and state musical contests. Rhapsody in Rhythm,” the spring concert, was com- posed of contemporary and classical music. The next month the band received a three rating at Piqua in the district band contest. The remainder of the year was spent reading different numbers and preparing for the annual Memorial Day Parade. The band is looking forward to another fine year in 1964-1965. 67 WOODWINDS: D. As we, the class of '65, entered upon our Junior year at R.H.S., we were eager to get underway, as it would be our first ear as upperclassmen. As freshmen we ad looked forward to all the excitement of this one year with a keen expectation, yet with a little anxiety toward the re- sponsibilities of putting on the social event of high school, the Junior-Senior Prom. Once again our classmates distin- guished themselves athletically, musi- cally, and scholastically. The Junior Class Play, Father Knows Best, was one of the most successful plays ever presented at R.H.S. Three years are behind us, and only one remains. Our first wish is that our Senior year will be as full and exciting as our first three. 74 Judy Amrine Sally Ballard Suzanne Beightler Bonnie Bell Jeff Benton David Bickley Rose Bonham Donna Borland Barbara Bugg Connie Cameron Dale Carpenter Frank Carter Roxye Carter John Caudill Mary Beth Cobb Linda Congrove Dan Converse l ed Cremeans Tonya Davis Roger Daymude Dee Ann DeBolt Geraldine Decker Mary DeGood Kelly Drake Lewis Durant Carol Ferguson Mary Jo Fetter W illiam Forrider Betty Fosnaugh Lynne Glass 75 Jane Guy Patricia Hoffman Sharon Holbrook Gene James Deborah Jerew Spencer Jordan Sherry Keigley Ronald Lane Dixie Ledley Mary Sue Livingston Carl Martin Robert Marvin William Maugans Sharon Mayberry Bonnie McBride Rodney McCullough Sue McMahan John Minter Ronald Murdock Lesley Music Roger Nelson Ed Olson Trudy Oman Roy Penix Linda Penny James Pratt Jo Ann Prichard Patricia Ransom Walter Ransome Laurann Reese Richard Ridge Dennis Roberts Terry Rockhold Judith Rubeck Daniel Rush Sandra Sanderson Doris Schrote Reba Shinkle Lois Smith Criss Somerlot Howard Somerlot Dianne Steele Barbara Stockwell Peggy Swartz Nickolas Taylor Thomas Thomas Sheila Ward Pamela Webb Mary W'ells Ernie Wheeler 77 SOPHOMORES Bob Webb, student council representative; Rick Hoffman, secretary; Russell Sivey, president; Rex Rader, vice president; Jim Blue, treasurer. In the fall of 1963, we sophomores entered upon our second great adventure in high school. During the year we knew where to go and how to get along with other people better than we aid as freshmen. This year has been very good to us, but we have had some hard times as well as good. The Honor Roll proves that we sophomores have not let our school down from the academic standpoint. Our class has had many participants in the athletic field and the teams of the future look very promising. In band and other extra-curricular activities, the sopho- mores have taken part in large numbers. The sophomore class has a lot of spirit as proved by the large profit made on our candy sale. Not only does our future in high school look bright, but our outlook on our entire lives seems to be one of great success and happiness. 78 Patrica Adams Connie Anderson Stephen Ballinger Sheryl Berry Steve Bickley Linda Birchfield James Blue Linda Bolenbaugh Rodney Bosse Harlan Burnside John Bushong Joe Carr Stephen Case Daniel Chapman Randall Chapman Vicki Childress Sharon Clayton Karen Collins Herbert Conley Sandra Davis 7® hi Bill Dennis Terry Erwin Dennis Fletcher Charles Fields Kennith Fulton Lorraine Gilkerson Paulette Goddard Becky Grose Bruce Gruber Cheryl Hall Mike Hamilton Philip Hecker Dick Hoffman Janet Kinikin Mike Kinikin Betty Lester Nancy Longshore Monna McBride Jim McElroy Barbara McDaniel Chuck Magill Paul Major Wanda Major Kirk Miller Dick Minter Mauri Morse Ed Music Karen Newman Diana O'Brian Mary Orceana so Violet Overfield David Pacha Michael Penny Pat Peoples Ted Pfarr David Preston Rex Rader John Ray Judy Reese Penny Reidenbaugh Jerry Reynolds Pat Rider Frederick Reidmiller Rodney Ridgeway Karen Salyer Janet Sampson Ronnie Scheiderer Jo Neal Schmelzer Virginia Schmelzer Daryl Shinkle Russell Sivey Patricia Smith Paula Somerlot Robert Speakman Ronnie Stidham 8! This year has held many exciting events for us which we shall remember always. We have met this first milestone of high school and have con- quered it.
