■ An annual is a partial reflection of a school in action. These pages record our physical appear- ance, list your activities, and indicate your success in some areas. This book will constitute a fine memento of the 1959-60 school year. However, no annual can capture the complete picture of school life. It may be that the un- pictured and recorded part is the more important. A person's character, his reputation, his philosophy, and his willingness to meet a challenge with determination are not recorded on these pages. Neither do we find a record of the knowledge and wisdom accumulated or the friendships established. I would like to wish every student of Richwood High School continued opportunities for growth in both the tangible and the abstract areas of life. May each of you enjoy health, attain happiness, render service, and develop an eternal faith. Sincerely, Richard D . BARRY Freshmen The high school road is four years long, and bitter- sweet, at once full of joy and sadness. Freshmen come in as underdogs, the lowest of the low. Scrubs against the varsity, last chairs in the band, victims of algebra, Spanish, general science, and English teachers, they eventually shake down into high school routine and look forward to becoming sophomores. J. BOWER SMITH J. BELT C. BUMGARNER W. BOYD R. BROWN 6 J. CONLEY T. CONNOLLY T. CHRISTY B. CONVERSE R. DOWNING Sophomores are frequently considered to be know-it- alls. With the precipitate precociousness of youth, they plunge into school life with refreshing vigor. Idealistic, with high goals, they also have the gratifying pleasure of looking back overtheir shoulders and down on freshmen. P. COWGILL L. FETTER T. GLOSSER D. EVANS M. FOGLE 1 7 G. IEDLEY As their social lives begin to bloom, they are con- fident that they have the world on a string. They begin to need money, lots of money, so one finds them mowing lawns, washing cars, pumping gas, house cleaning, and sitting babies. At year's end, sophomores achieve their heart's desire—and become juniors—upperclassmen. M. LILLEY 18 R. ROGERS The juniors come into their own. They begin to fill varsity positions on the teams, and therefore become heroic in stature; there are play try-outs, and the joy of joining the chosen ones, or the sadness of being omitted—the fun of rehearsals and the ecstasy and agony of performance night. L. RANSOME J. RIDER M. SCHMELZER T. RIDGE L. WELCH 19 W. SLOOP G. SMITH C. STEVENS B. STIDHAM J. WILLIS There's the togetherness of working the concession stand at the basketball games—and the dubious pleasure of cleaning up afterward. With mixed emotions, seven seniors made their last tackles for the Orange and the Black. It had been a long road from the scorching dog days of August. Lacking in weight, the Tiger line had fought gamely, desperately, as their heavier opponents blasted into the secondary. Losing, but never learning to like the taste of defeat, the Tigers had developed enough offensive punch to average over nine points per game. And then it was over. And it had been a losing season! Worth- while? Ask Fritz and the boys! They'd do it again! Basketball Hit hard by graduation, the 1959-60 basketball team lacked experience and height. Although Coach Morrison tried many combinations of players, the team just couldn't seem to develop a consistent winning habit. While this wasn't one of Richwood's better seasons, the underclassmen gained much- needed experience. Track The Tiger thinclads experienced a successful season as they became Ohio Wesleyan Relays champions, Richwood Relays Champions, and Mid-Ohio Conference champions. Headlining the field of individual accomplishments was Imanf Sami Is, who became Class A State Pole Vault Champion, with a vault of II feet, 8inches. Records were broken in the mile and half- mile by Ronnie Bond. Very good times were also established in the shuttle hurdles and two-mile relay. The scarcity of seniors on this year's team indicates probable success for the '61 edition of Tiger track. 39 Queen Ruth Ann Dilsaver Judy Reidenbaugh Conni Roberts Patty Carrel Linda McCafferty Senior Attendant Junior Attendant Freshman Attendant Sophomore Attendant Rieliwood Relays The first important event to be staged on the new track was the Riehwood Invitational Relays. With six schools competing, the participants were warmly welcomed by track and buffs. The Tiger thinclads enthusiastically entered into the testive spirit of the occasion, decisively trampling their opponents to add the first place trophy to their growing collection. Opponents included Marion Catholic, Marysville, Delaware, North Robinson, and Pleasant. Richwood's Bill Cowgill and Dick Blue tied for individual high point honors. Awards were presented by the Relays Queen, Ruthie Dilsaver, and her Court. 40 FIRST ROW: J McElroy, C. Pittman, S. Rouse, J. Blue, J. Robertson, F. Powers, L. Main. SECOND ROW: M. Hoffman, B. Junior Play “Men Are Like Streetcars Maudie, a young juvenile who supposedly knew all about handling men, gave her friends and boyless sister lessons on how to catch a man. Her theory was that men are like streetcars-——if you miss one, another comes along in a minute, but she managed to lose her own man and her friends in training them. However, Maudie tried some more of her philosophy and this time, fixed things so everyone was happy and on speaking terms once again. 4 1 Senior Play 44 Cheaper By The Dozen FIRST ROW: N. Fields, C. Dad's assembly calls started the confused organization in the Gilbreth family. They even conjugated French and German verbs in the bathtub after Dad demonstrated how to use motion study in the process of taking a speedy bath. Guten abend, Fred. 42 The R. H. S. Concert Band The Concert Band showed its stuff this year at District Band Contest in Piqua, Ohio, when it was the only band in its class to receive Superior ratings from all fudges. This gave it the opportunity to travel, with picnic baskets loaded, to State Band Contest in Mansfield, Ohio, where it was a- warded an Excellent rating. The jazzier members of the Concert Band were in the Friday afternoon Dance Band, which provided music to dance by for the Choral Cabaret. The Dance Band FIRST ROW: S. Erwin, C. Roberts, V. Mosher, D. Tiger Marching Band The R.H.S. marching band stepped out long before the school doors opened this year. Late in the summer they responded to calls of About face! and “To the left flank, march! from Director Robert Shoemaker. The band suffered through heat waves and freezing cold to produce new drills, special shows, and a lot of fancy footwork. They were always in the best of spirits, though, and sang their way merrily on the band bus. Anyone who has ever ridden on that bus will not easily forget Little Cottage In A Woods, Run Along Home, Mattalena Cattalena Rubensteina Wattendotta, and fight song and cheers. 44 Majorette M. Sander , S. Reese, J. McBride, P. Cowgill, ond L. McCafferty led the band through practices, parades, and band shows. FLUTE QUARTET D. Case, C. Cochran, M. Sanders, E. Winter Bb CLARINET QUARTET J. Rider, C. Bumgarner, S. Poast, K. Rockhold Ensembles and soloists played and sang at District Contest to bring home Superior and Ex- cellent ratings. Mosher MIXED CLARINET QUARTET K. McDaniel, N. Evans, M. McDaniel, L. Parish The Girls' Chorus The girls' chorus did it again! The theme of this year's choral cabaret was Oklahoma! Director Robert Shoemaker and his chorus enjoyed every minute they spent on stage. Costumes were found in attics and in grandmother's trunks, and dainty lasses with cowpokes by their sides were the end product. Several girls took the scenery in hand and spent long hours after school painting scenery and themselves, while they warded off trampoline jumpers who were hopping on the stage. Soloists Bonham, Poast, and Winter warbled before judges at District Contest. Brass Sextet: C. Stierhoff, A. Motlack, J. Hamilton, R. Dilsaver, J. London, M. Winter. 46 FIRST ROW: M. Winters, S.
