Board of Education Meeting in our Richwood High School Board room the first Monday night of each month, these men established our school policy. Representing the citizens of the community, the Board of Education is a link between the public and the school. Theirs is a sometimes pleasant, frequently difficult, often unheralded job requiring vision, a- wareness of the social and economic problems of our time, and devotion to the best interests of our people. 2 GLEN L. These five seniors and a lone junior started with the trials and tribulations of advertising sales, worked through the photography, and arranged, cut, pasted, and wrote to meet the end-of-school dead- line. And so, the finished product—your '59 Tigrtrax. 35 Library Council The library council consisted of fifteen members, with Mrs. Cochran as advisor. Each of the members devoted several periods a week to service and maintenance. Student Council The student council consists of the officers of each class, and is under the sponsorship of Mr. White and Mr. Fetter. It is designed to aid in giving information to students, and to make de- cisions in such affairs as are delegated to them by the administration. This year these decisions involved homecoming, Christmas decorations, and caps and gowns. 35 F. F. A. OFFICERS: John Davis, Treasurer; Charles Minter, Reporter; John Knaul, Sentinel; Jim Stierhoff, President; Charles McNomee, Vice- President; Don Wasserbeck, Student Advisor; Ray Mabrey, Secretary; Mark Evans, State Farmer. F. F. A. These boys have organized the annual F. F. A. Banquet, judging, and state wide contest competition. Mark Evans, senior F. F. A. member, was distinguished by election as a State Farmer. 36 Achievements of the local chapter of the Future Farmers of America included a gold award in Secretary's Book Contest, a first place in sheep and wool judging by Charles McNamee, a superior rating in the State Chapter contest, and a first in District Highway Safety contest. F. H. A. OFFICERS: Ruthie Styer, President; Geneva Dilsaver, Vice-President; Ruth Dilsaver, Secretary; Janet London, Treasurer; Betty Fausnaugh, News Reporter; Mrs. Peoples, Advisor. F. H. A. The Future Homemakers of America participated in the County F. H. A. Rally Party at Christmas time for the children of the Magnetic Springs Polio Foundation. In May, they held a Get Acquainted Dance and Party where next year's incoming members were formally initiated. Perhaps the most important event of the year for the F. H. A. was the Mother and Daughter Banquet in the spring. It was held so that the mothers might see what their daughters have ac- complished in homemaking. After the banquet, the girls wore their own creations in a style show presentation. 37 National Honor Society One of the highest achievements a student at Richwood High School can strive for, is to become a member of the local chapter of the National Honor Society. Since its organization in 1951, our total membership is 107. To become a member, a student must have at least a B average. He is then considered by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership, seivice and character. Twelve students were notified of their election in a tapping ceremony at a student assembly. They were formally inducted into full membership in an impressive ceremony before parents and friends on Sunday, March 15. PRESENT MEMBERS: Nancy Deisher, Mark Evans, Bill Foreman, Olan Love, Martha Cramer, Lanny Littell, Roger McDaniel, Edna Sue Shoup, Secretary; Jim Christy, President; Delores Downing, Vice-President; Christine Fetter, Treasurer. Perkins, J. McEIro) Scholarship Team Each year Richwood High School is represented in the District-State Scholarship tests conducted at Otterbein College. This year thirty-two students, two for each subject, went to Otterbein. The scholarship team represents the highest academic level in school. To qualify for this honor, a student had to achieve high ranking in the preliminary tests given to everyone in the school. 39 Senior Play This year the senior class tackled one of the best plays that ever came to Broadway. Thornton Wilder's Our Town was a departure from the usual class plays. Except for bare essentials, such as tables and chairs, scenery was not used. Our Town was the story of the birth, life, and death of part of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. The turmoil of emotions that make up life ranged from humor to sorrow and grief. The cast for the play was as follows Stage Manager.............Charles McNamee Emily Webb..............Marilyn Kelly Dr. Gibbs..................Roger McDaniel Professor Willard .... Wayne Penry Joe Crowell...............Junior Thompson Mr. Webb................. Paul Hoffman Howie Newsome................Lanny Littell Simon Stimson...........Fred Newman Mrs. Gibbs.................Edna Sue Shoup Constable Warren . . . It concerned a family that decided to get away from the hectic life of the city, only to discover that rustic life also has its tribulations. Betty MacDonald . . . . The club has afforded the members an opportunity to practice their language together. Class officers were: Lanny Littell, President; Mary Jo Bevis, Vice-President; Connie Roberts, Secretary; Terry Cochran, Treasurer; Lana Sue Bevis, News Reporter; and Mr. Henry Schrager, Advisor. 42 C koras The highlight of the year for the Richwood High Chorus was the presentation of the Choral Cabaret. South Pacific was the major theme, along with selections from several outstanding Broadway musicals; The Music Man, The King and I. and Most Happy Fella. Scenery for the Cabaret was painted by members of the chorus. Together with the Triple Trio and soloists, the girls sang several selections from South Pacific. Triple Trio The triple trio was organized under the direction of Robert Shoemaker. These nine girls de- voted study hall and after-school time to practice. A superior rating was earned at District Contest. At State Contests they received a good rating. The girls sang for the Christmas Program, F. F. A. and F. H. A. Banquets, C. C. L. Con- vention, and the Choral Cabaret. - AVV. Concert Band Under the direction of Robert Shoemaker, Let's go back and start again was a phrase that became familiar to the Richwood Concert Band personnel. The fifty-seven members worked hard to prepare for the Spring Concert and the District Contest. At contest in Covington, Richwood earned an excellent rating, together with fine experi- ence for future competition. Dance Band The dance band practiced after school each Wednesday night. The organization was a stellar attraction at the Choral Cabaret on May 15. The Richwood Tiger Marching Band this year was made up of fifty-four members, two flag carriers, four majorettes, and one head majorette. Appearing at the half-time at all home and away games, they won the Battle of the Bands with consistently commendable performance. They also appeared at the Richwood Fair, in the Memorial Day services, and at the Van Wert Peony Festival. 46 Ruthie Styer, chosen Richwood's Homecoming Queen for 1958, was crowned by last year's queen, Charlotte Shields. Queen Ruthie presented co-captains Jim Stierhoff and Don Wheeler a good-luck football. Cecil Charles, representing the alumni of Richwood High School, gave the Queen a large bouquet of red roses. Queen Ruthie's attendants and their escorts were Bonnie Stidham and Roger McDaniel; Betty Prichard and Fred Allgower; Connie Roberts and Gary Carrel; and Nancy Allen and Danny Swartz. 47 Football Under the leadership of Coaches Drodrfsky and Morrison, this year's edition of the Tigers had many thrilling moments, in compiling a record of four wins, three losses, one tie. High interest and excitement prevailed from the Pre-View at Mt. Gilead to the final gun at Marion Catholic. Tiger tackles Lanny Littell and Steve Robinson placed on the Mid-Ohio first team. Bill Foreman, guard, and Jim Stierhoff, fullback, won honorable mention. Fifteen seniors have made their last tackle for the Orange and the Black. 49 50 Basketball The '58-'59 basketball season was an interesting one. With six experienced seniors on the varsity squad, together with three juniors up from the reserves, competition was keen for the starting five. Midway in the first round, the Tigers were derailed, but as the end of the competition drew near, the team began to shape up. When tournament time rolled around, the Tigers won two thrillers and then dropped the Union County Championship by one point to Union. In district play they met a highly-touted Ridgedale team and were defeated by three points, concluding a sometimes frustrating but always interesting season.
