Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1953 volume:

Published by THE STUDENTS of RICHWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Richwood, Ohio To you, Mr. Fisher, we, the staff of the TIGRTRAX annual, dedicate this yearbook. We do it in appreciation for your kindness, understanding and co- operation in all our school activities. This school year, 1952-1953, has been a busy and rewarding year. Throughout the entire year you have always been willing to help and to advise us whenever we needed it. We shall always remember and try to follow the example that you have set for us in our school days. HOMER R. FISHER, Superintendent Left to right: K. D. Kyle, Clerk, Dwight Minter, Charles Shields, Homer R. Fisher, Superintendent, Ralph Matlack, President, Paul Swartz, Chester Parrott, Vice Presi- dent. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education represents the public in the operation of the school. As the delegates of the people they are charged with the responsibility of operating the school within the limits set up by law. Within these limits, they are the final authority in the operation of the local school. In spite of the burden of responsibility imposed on them, it is considered an honor to serve on the Board of Education, for by serving here they serve the youth of the com- munity. As the direct benefactors of their efforts, the students of Richwood High School say thank you to the Board of Education. HOMER R. FISHER, B. Sc., M. A. Superintendent RICHARD D. FETTER, B. Sc. SENIOR CLASS We know what we are, but know not what we may be. The beginning of our high school escapade started in the fall of 1949, with Daniel Shank taking us under his protecting wing. We gave our first stage appearance in presenting a short assembly, called The Cat's Whiskers, for the high school. By the time we were Sophomores, we became more accustomed to the many activities and events that take place in the everyday life of the students. Some of our boys were fortunate enough to make the football and basketball teams. Juniors! At last we are Juniors, ordering classrings, and preparing to show our acting ability to the public. The Little Dog Laughed was under the direction of Dean Cochran. The biggest event of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet, which was held in Columbus, Ohio at the Seneca Hotel. It was tremendously enjoyed by all. At the beginning of the Senior year, we journeyed to Delaware to have our pictures taken at Cubberly's Studio. Later in the year, we presented our play, January Thaw. The latter part of the year was spent in selecting the class motto, colors, and planning the trip. Now, we come to the end of our high school life, half afraid of what lies in the future for us. We know what we are. We are the class of 1953, preparing to take the biggest step of our lives, but we know not what we may be. - JOHN ANKNEY FFA 1,2, 3,4; Physical Education 1,2 3.4. JUNIOR CLASS The Junior Class started the year 1952-1953 by electing officers and choosing class rings. The elected officers were: Larry Chapman, President, John Coder, Vice President, Becky Morrison, Secretary, Betty Jo Webster, Treasurer. After much debate we finally decided on All-American style class rings. Our big aim this year was to make enough money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. This we did by selling Christmas cards and serving several dinners. During the previous summer, we operated a concession stand at Baccarat Lake. Another money-making project was collecting sales tax stamps. We decided to have the Junior-Senior Banquet at Hotel Harding in Marion, on May 8. In April, our class presented a series of three one-act plays: THEY ALSO SERVE, THE INFORMER, and UNDERTOW. We, being sophomores, are one step nearer graduation and are somewhat surer of ourselves now that we are on our way. The boys of our class participated in all high school sports, FFA, Boys' and Mixed Choruses, and the girls, in FHA, Mixed and Girls' Choruses. Both boys and girls took part in the high school band. Our class elected the following officers: Kermit Converse, President, Lynn Slemmons, Vice President, and Janet Cudd, Secretary-Treasurer. FRESHMAN CLASS The Freshman class started the year with its fifty-one members divided among the many various claves. Although we had been in this building for two years, we felt new and shy. However, with the help of our teachers we soon became accustomed to high school life. Several members of our class chose as their extra-curricular activities high school athletics. Band, Boys' and Girls' Chorus, and Mixed Chorus. We also had representatives in FFA, and FHA. We were very proud to have two reserve cheerleaders chosen from our class. To lead us this first and important year we chose the following officers: President, Bob Roberts, Vice President, John Moyer, and Secretary-Treasurer, Kay Brobeck. S. Allen R. Ballard M. Berhard M. Both the mixed chorus and girls’ chorus presented many different selections of Christmas selections. While the Band and Brass Ensemble rounded out the program with carols both sacred and secular. The girls’ chorus gave one program in a community church during the observance of Holy Week this year. This proved to be both a new and pleasing experience to all who participated in the program. She was a member of the girls' chorus, mixed chorus, marching band, and concert band. The music department sent people to the District Solo and Ensemble contest at Urbana, Ohio. This year Shirley Yoalum, accompanist for the choral groups, entered the piano contest, while Don Cole- grove, Fay Rush, Virgil Farringer, and Gale Perkins entered the contest as members of a boys’ quartet. Last minute note from Mr. Pence: Maybe we didn’t win top honors—but we sure ate good! BAND All in all, the band had quite a time. Even before the school year began, the R. H. S. band played at the Richwood Fair during the afternoon races. The football band, 43 strong, began the season by participating in the Football Review at Kenton, Ohio, at the beginning of the season; along with the Upper Sandusky, Kenton, and Forest Bands. The band also accompanied the team to every away-from-home game during the season. The outstanding football half-time show was the homecoming ceremonies. Although the Concert Band was unable to attend the contest this year, it is believed they more than made up for that loss when they presented their Spring Band Program. The this and that column of the school defined this program as exciting and different. It, the program, will serve as a memo- rable occasion in the minds of all who participated in that program. Did you notice the Majorette uniforms and American Rag and School Flag present in the Memorial Day Parade? The uniforms were bought from the Band Booster Dances held last fall and winter and spring. The American Flag was donated by the Richwood American Legion Post; while the School Rag (dig that crazy color combination! Real solid-eh?) was presented to the band by the Richwood Lions Club. Even the music department had a hand in our new front by purchasing the pole and carrying strap for the School Flag. If you missed the new additions to the band Memorial Day, you can cast your peepers on these aesthetic prominia of splendor during the Richwood Fair week. The Richwood Band was designated as the official Fair Band. To our graduating band members: Now that you are members of society at large don't neglect to visit us (band members) often! A note of thanks to the Band Boosters Organization who worked diligently for the Band this year, and for the wonderful times we all had at Holiday Hill. Also our thanks to the Athletic Department who helped defray the expenses for that event. This is your musical reporter leaving you until next year with this thought in mind: The old joke about being natural isn't as flat as some of the sharp people would have us to believe. JANUARY THAW THE CAST SENIOR PLAY The Senior Play of 1953. a three-act comedy entitled January Thaw, was the story of the Gage family who had bought an old farmhouse in Connecticut. Mr. Gage was an author and his wife a collector of antiques. Complications arose when the Rockwood family, whom everyone had believed to be dead, returned, and due to a clause in the deed, claimed their rights as owners. Even the Gage's lawyer wasn't able to disprove their claim. Their son, Matt had such a reputation that the maid, Freda, quit Uncle Walter, an old character, welcomed the return of his old friends. Some misunderstandings occurred when Barbara and Matt went to help a neighbor woman deliver her baby. The Gages, Rockwoods, and Barbara's fiancee, George, believed that Barbara and Matt had eloped because of Sarah's twisted story. Even the local law officer was brought into the search. However, all ended well, and they settled down to live happily ever after. VARSITY FOOTBALL Along about September ninth of 1952 the Richwood Tigers started another season of football and to all by-standers it looked like another average season, too bad and not too good. But to the surprise of many fans and most of all the boys who played was the way the season turned out. We discovered that we could win ball games. We started but with a mild victory over Elm Valley 13-6. The coaches didn’t consider this much of a payment for the loss they handed us last year, but we won it anyhow. Then came our big rivals, who else, Marysville. We journeyed down to the big town and didn't come back very happy, because they upset our goal and handed us a thorough 27-6 licking. After this week, we were still licking our wounds, we played a tough game at Mt. Gilead and finally squeezed out a 19-13 victory. We then decided to get down to business and play some football and were all ready for the highly rated Carding- ton team whom we all wanted to beat very bad and our wishes were granted by a score of 44-0. We then traveled up to Plymouth and came back with another victory under our belts, 46-0. Then came another rival for the Tigers in the form of the Irish of St. Marys. We had a tough time at first, but finally managed to dig out a 32-13 victory over them. Then came the team that was to take the Mid-Buckeye and we wanted to prove to them that they couldn't and after a hard-fought game we had another victory from Big Walnut by a score of 27-14. Then came the final game for the season and the last for a group of Seniors and we wanted to make it good, but we were playing a team who hadn't been beaten in two years, and had only six points scored on them this season, but we were determined to finish the season with a win so we fought hard and won a well-deserved game by defeating undefeated Butler 20-12. This brought to an end the 1952 season of football for the Richwood Tigers. Although we didn't take part in the Mid-Buckeye League we beat all the teams of it and were awarded a nice trophy for our sea- son of seven wins and a lone defeat. BASKETBALL The 1952-53 basketball season for the Richwood Tigers was started out with a bang with the Tigers winning their first six games. The season then advanced with the Tigers holding their own and losing some tough ones before the regular season was over. This season was one of the best ever for the Tigers with them setting quite a few records that will stand for a while. Their nineteen wins and only five defeats may be the best ever. The team score of 105 points for a single game is a new record for the school. Dick Oman's individual score for his senior year and his total score for all four years is a new record. Although our Tigers didn't go v far as we would have liked, we still can thank all the boys who made up the squad for their fine work throughout the 1952-53 season. TRACK The track season of 1953 was another good season for the Tigers. This made it three years in a row that we have come home with second place in the district. It seemed that there was just always some- one a little bit better to take the top position. The Tigers sent more boys to the state this year than ever before, but we weren’t so successful there, with only Dick Oman placing third in the low hurdles. Outside of this record, the only change on the board was Jim Fox, who tied the high jump mark with a jump of 5 feet 7 inches. The track season was drawn to a close at the state meet with all the members of the squad deserving a fine word for their work. 1953 TRACK SUMMARY 20th. in the State in Class B with 3 points 2nd. in Central District with 33. 2 points 5th. in Upper Sandusky Class A Relay with 39 points 3rd. in State in Low Hurdles Also won Mid-Buckeye Conference meet with 80 points. COMMERCIAL CLUB The Commercial Club was formed this year for the purpose of helping the school and com- munity with its smaller typing and duplicating problems. Any student who has at least one semester of typing and a speed of 30 words a minute on the typewriter is eligible to join this club. There was little work done this year by the club, but it is hoped that in future years the club will become larger and serve as a very use fu' organization of the school.
